Does anyone have any good suggestions for a dinosaur hunting game?

I'm thinking like an expedition in the 1920's or maybe a sci-fi game preserve.

It would be cool to have it as co-op with the dinos autonomous, but a vs. game would be fun too.

Thanks!

Adventures in the Lost Lands sounds like what you are looking for. Works co-op or VS.

Check out their free Chain Reaction 3.0 to see if you like their basic mechanisms. link

I think TUSK is another rules set that would do it.

And Saurian Safari.

Sorry, no links handy.

Lots of cool and informative discussions there, both past and recent. Plus their file folders have lots of rules, mods, stats and scenarios.

I run Adventures in the Lost Lands with 28mm figures. The lizards can be got at reasonable prices from Hobby Lobby, Michael's Hobbies and Crafts (chain stores), Target. Look for the following brands: Safari, Schleich, and Papo.
Adventures in the lost lands provides reaction sheets for 19th and 20th century soldiers (Askari), cavemen, big game hunters, and adventurers.

The game system is reaction based with the player passing or not passing success rolls on 2D6 (with success on a roll or 1,2, or 3). The options are: two successes, one success, or no successes. Everyone gets to move and shoot (if you are human) each turn as well.

I like the Dinosaur rules. Many Melee dice.

Friend of mine complained the Apatasaurs were boring. I fabricated a "droppings" template and a gas template for the truely huge creations. Best not to get caught in those templates.

Dinosaur gaming has opend whole new worlds.

And Lost Lands just received an Origins Award nomination for Best Miniatures Rules.

Yo can play as hunters or dinos or both. I ran a couple of games at recruits where the son play a T-Rex and the Dad was a hunter on the opposite side.

Tooth and Claw, Saurian Safari, Tusks, Thrilling Expeditions, Lost Lands, and Sticks and Stones are all good it just depends on what kind of game mechanics you are into and how much chrome you want. CC I think already linked to two of the best Yahoo groups to join which are both very active and have tons of scenarios, supplemental material and free rules for download.

Tooth and Claw and Saurian Safari have the prehistoric mammals and dinosaurs respectively autonomous or can be GM controlled. If you are going to game in 28 mm Copplestone Castings has the best safari hunter figures as well as some critters, Foundry's Darkest Africa line has excellent figures (sculpted by Mark Copplestone)but they are pricy, DeeZee Miniatures have wonderful prehistoric mammals, Primeval Designs has both great dinos and prehistoric mammals, Iron Wind Metals has old Ral Partha prehistoric animals that are wonderful and still hold up even with scale creep, and Jeff Valent studios has the best T-Rex bar none. Jeff Valent also has an excellent Triceratops and Mammoth. Matsuru mentioned the best toy dinosaurs with Safari, Schleich, and Papo. Although be a bit picky with these if you are a stickler for having prehistoric critters in scale with your 28 mm figures. Most of the toy dinosaurs from these three companies are 1/40 scale so they are on the BIG side compared to 28mm which works out to 1/56 scale more or less. Although certain creatures visually match well. This is a personal choice of course.

If you are on a budget then Khurasan miniatures is the way to go. He has a wonderful 15mm line that covers just about anything you might need providing both dinosaurs and hunters.

Happy hunting and do not get eaten. evil grin

Awesome! Which ones are they? I'm always looking for ideas, plus other members here might want to look in on them too.

Thanks,

I REALLY need to get a copy of Adventures in Lost Lands soon! I have been thinking about working on my stuff. I picked up a load of stuff from HLBS right before they dumped their Prehistoric range. I mean you just have to have a bunch of compys running around. They are a small chicken sized Dino.

Thanks,

John

I started with GASLIGHT, turned to Saurian Safari since it was specifically made for Dino hunts, decided it was too clunky and have been back to GASLIGHT ever since.

I prefer Saurian Safari myself, especially for multiplayer games with an umpire.

Buy some 15mm Victorians, go to the dollar store and get the pack of small dinos, base, flock and touch up and you're in cheaply.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART21 Apr 2011 7:43 p.m. PST

Ed rules. Good luck in the awards!

CC

Cavewars and Lost Worlds Safari which you already linked and I am going to join the Lost World of Kong you linked as well.

Oh and regardless of the rules you or anyone goes with, or whether you do 28mm, or 15mm, Dino hunts are just plain fun to game. I plan to expand my Dino games to larger VSF battle games using Venus as the planet that is still in a primordial setting.

Mulligan22 Apr 2011 6:57 a.m. PST

Thrilling Expeditions is great for both solo and gamemastered dinosaur hunting scenarios that you can do in a relatively small space, and the rules should work equally well for 15-mm and 28-mm figures. (I do all of my pulp gaming in 28-mm scale.) For my King Kong game, I used the SuperSystem rules, with some home rules adjustments, which provided a really enjoyable game.
