I'm in the middle of re-basing my 7YW army to make it compliant with a new rule set we'll be using.

It is almost traditional to bemoan this particular chore so I wonder if I'm alone in quite enjoying the opportunity to improve the bases & to open the door to a number of hopefully fun games?

So is your reaction to re-basing:
a) enjoy the opportunity
b) all part of the rich tapestery that is gaming
c) rather have root-canal work

A
I'm currentl rebasing a load of my 28mm SF figures from GW slotta bases to 1p pieces. They look much better and give the plastic figures a bit of weight. A very satisfying operation.

kreoseus216 Apr 2011 4:37 a.m. PST

D) begrudge the lost painting/playing time it costs. Currently rebasing a big 15mm russian army for lasalle and a huge collection of 15mm fantasy based 20+ years ago on balsa (it was all I could get in the dark time before the web and credit cards) which is now being rebased on ERM bases for HOTT and Mighty armies, as the old balsa bases are now shrapnel.

Actually at times it's a relief
as I probably wasn't sure if
I liked the current basing.
(yes it is a vicious circle)

Florida Tory16 Apr 2011 5:26 a.m. PST

Only way to get it done is to pretend the answer is b), when we really think c).

I NEVER do it. I spend too much time getting my bases the way I want them to change.

Most of my stuff is single based figures, but even for other figures I won't do it.

One of the big reasons I never took to JRIII.

Warbeads16 Apr 2011 6:05 a.m. PST

I have thin magnetic material on my individual based pieces that I can use with sabot bases that have a metal surface layer.

Gracias,

Glenn

What Florida Tory said.

I have never done it. But right now I am thinking about it, for my ancient armies. Right now they are based as singles to be put in trays. But when I see peoples pictures of their armies based for Impetus… I feel it looks so much better, that I want to rebase mine! The only thing keeping me from doing so right now is the money put into the bases I have no other need for! But I am not sure how long I can still resist. frown

Cheers,

Burkhard

I'm with Pete. I don't rebase figures. There isn't a ruleset out there that absolutely needs the basing it recommends.

Cardinal Ximenez16 Apr 2011 7:56 a.m. PST

C) But worth it in some cases.]

Rebased the few armies for WAB that weren't DBx.
Have never looked back from the insanity that is singly based pike armies.

Root canal without anesthetic!

I require that all ofmy minis for a given set of rules have the same basing… i'm a bit OC that way. Unfortunately, I tend to come up with new basing that I like more as time goes on. So I wind up rebasing a lot of old stuff so I can useit with newer stuff that I never expected to expand. Lately I have collected up the WFB Goblins that I rebased for Confrontation (and never used,) then rebased for Song of Blades and Heroes (and never used) so that I can rebase them for D&D 4th edition RPG. At least I think with the FOURTH set of bases on the models, they might actually get used…

Seem like I did this a lot with 40K and Vor stuff too… and my 15mm collection a few times over…

I'm rebasing my 6mm SYW armies so I feel your pain!

raducci16 Apr 2011 3:40 p.m. PST

Basing should have more of an impact than the actual figure painting.
So, sure. Worthwhile task.

14Bore16 Apr 2011 5:20 p.m. PST

mine need updating badly it would seem, but don't know if I want to.

Grand Duke Natokina16 Apr 2011 5:31 p.m. PST

Ochoin,
I got shot once, prefer that to rebasing.

C with some grudging acknowledgment of B.

ochoin deach16 Apr 2011 8:27 p.m. PST

Yeah, Weaselhofen but was it a flesh wound or did it hit vitals?????

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER16 Apr 2011 8:36 p.m. PST

It was a flesh wound, it only hit the fleshy part of his brain…

d) only if it improves the protection of the figures.

Napoleonic bayonets, I'm looking at you!
Was glad to go from Empire single rank basing to double rank Napoleons Battles. The single rank bases tipped over so much. Then later decided to rebase again from NB to square bases that keep the bayonets completely within bounds -- no protrusions.

highlandcatfrog16 Apr 2011 11:05 p.m. PST

e) Prefer do-it-yourself brain surgery while getting a root canal.

vojvoda17 Apr 2011 6:51 a.m. PST

I have never rebased but god I have some ugly bases that need to be updated. So I guess I am between b and c.

Ochoin,
3 inches left and I could be doing Mickey Mouse's voice today.

I have started intermittently re-basing my old 80s / 90s era 25mm D&D figures for use with the modern larger 28+mm figures. I didn't know how to use flock in those days, so I'm really enjoying it, and the end result looks much better, though one player who has his own collection of similar figures decries the "thick" slottabases I am conforming with.

Dasher18 Apr 2011 8:48 a.m. PST

I simply won't do it.
No rules set is worth the aggravation.

ochoin deach19 Apr 2011 2:23 a.m. PST

Having been around for a bit, I'd say fashions in basing figures change too.
This could be a reason to re-base?

stenicplus20 Apr 2011 5:33 a.m. PST

b)

Currently rebasing 20mm WW2.

I was loath to because they were already based; but badly and with incorrect figure numbers.

Having completed the Brits I'm glad I did it as now it's easier to see at a glance what the base represents and they also look much better.

I was full of angst over the time effectively wasted cutting the old bases, glueing, flocking etc.. but some times you just have to get over it and move.

c ish

I try and avoid rebasing
