BBDBA (I don't greatly enjoy standard 12 element DBA, though it's not bad) for pickup games, modified Days of Knights for campaigns, Flower of Chivalry melded with Ancient and Medieval Wargaming for historical refights. |

FoG but you really have a hard time just picking up a game. Might of Arms is really, really good for medievals. DBA big battle is a bit more fun than basic DBA. I will try Impetus some day. Should work well for Medievals as it models unit scrums well (but so does FoG IMO) Keep in mind that playing in period really allows for most rules to work. It is when trying to match up armies out of period that many rules tend to have the bigger problems and rightly so. As an example, nothing I have seen models the Mongol tactics on a smaller scale. |

Now use Neil Thomas "Medieval Wargames" and subsequent adaptions. Tried: Ed Smith Wars of the roses Medieval Tactica (not bad) Poleaxed (good but fiddely) Flower of Chivalry (don't like command rules) Warhammer Medieval supplement (Skirmish only) Warmaster (too abstract) DBA (ditto) Warrior Kings ( interesting reaction charts) and many others. Might of Arms Days of Knights Impetus ( not for me) |

Hi Lets see, as in ancients this gets asked regularly without context and the usual suspects reply. I think it would be simpler to just have a bit in the area with a synthesis. Pick up game? Art of War doesn't require anyone rebase or anything to play. How is that as an aspect? Rocky |

Day of Battle is good, Days of Knights is good, but I most often use Rally Round the King by Two Hour Wargames. I also play Montjioe fairly often. |

Probably depends on what era/location of 'medieval' you want to play. Looking at western Europe in the 14th century (with the caveat that I'm a medieval historian by training) I've not found anything that really works. Hail Caesar looks interesting – have n't tried it out yet – but it seems to stipulate that infantry are automatically disordered by cavalry which is, at best, pretty questionable. |
