I see that Army Painter has started their own range of them too.

Just one pickup-point if you'll excuse me?: Army Painter do not have 'their own range' per se.

They sell reboxed Silflor/MiniNatur badged as Army Painter (with a little minNatur logo on the box) but at twice the price of normal Silflor/MiniNatur.

So if you want the same product and pay twice as much, then go with Army Painter, otherwise stick with the original packaging version.

I don't think anyone could disagree with that statement. I might even go further and say that humanity has not benefited from a single advancement since our ancestor organisms took in the bacteria that became our mitochondria.

Silflor tufts are not a "development". They are a divine gift, of the sort that provides a Cate Blanchett from the stuff of the human gene pool.

@Antenocetis- I am glad you mentioned that AP do at least put an acknowledgement on their packaging to miniNatur. But like you say why pay twice the price for a product just because it has an AP packaging?

I've never bought the AP stuff, just the original branded stuff, but thanks for pointing that out.

@aecurtis – yes good advice. Give them a good press down

(I will now and go and have a check of my recent posts to check that I am not the culprit!!!)

@Antenocetis- do MiniNatur/Silfor let AP do this???

Yup, the packs are marked with the MiniNatur logo, its just a normal re-branding deal.

The AP tufts are fine as they are the same, and for some people haivng easy access to Army Painter tufts via their LGS makes them a decent choice over buying online, especially if only buying a small pack as a sample.

They just dont work out to be economical once you get beyond the "sampling" stage.

You weren't, SealladhArd, but I think my comment was too harsh. Yep, press 'em down well so that they blend in with the other terrain material.

…better than somebody reviewing the AP tufts as "far superior to MiniNatur but not as good as Silflor…"

Yep. Some days you get up and find yourself weeping before the first cup of coffee. But it's all part of life's rich pageant.

They are fine. I recommend them. I wouldn't use them on every single model. I prefer them for the special models.

Antenocitis CSR,

I recently bought a pack of Ap branded tufts, for £3.59, i notice on your site you are selling the same product, in its origional packaging for £3.96, so how is it twice the price? Or are they cutting the strip in half, then packaging it?

unless of course your refering to the large packs which i havent seen as re-branded packs.

Steve.

Yes, AP version is only half the pack. RRP is £3.99. Easy math.

Derek H01 Apr 2011 2:40 p.m. PST

Have Army Painter ever produced anything that isn't an existing product repackaged with a 100% plus markup?

yorkie o101 Apr 2011 3:56 p.m. PST

Blimey, i didnt realise that was what they were doing, bit cheeky isnt it.

Ill be buying direct from now on then!!
Cheers for enlightening me.

Yorkie: Yes, the AP is half the size of the MiniNatur small packs.

I get all my tufts form Scenic Express. Did not know there were other sources. Is there an actual Silfor company, where we can order direct?

Jerrod03 Apr 2011 4:46 a.m. PST

mininatur.de is the name of the manufacturing company, based in Germany.

Silflor is an "old" tradename that was popularised in the USA, but it all comes from MiniNatur.

If you like the Silfor grass tufts you may want to take a look at Green Line Scenerys' range. I get mine from Fredericus-Rex online, and for my money they are superior to the Silfor product. They are however a bit more expensive.

I'm a convert. I just started using these, as well as the Green Line stuff, a couple of months ago, and they're great.

Bought afew packs of the tufts from Antenociti at Salute on saturday to replenish my stocks. I do use 'loose' flock grass on some projects still (well, I have a bag of it and I might was well use it up) but for most projects – especially figure basing – I find the tufts approach to be very user friendly, non wasteful (how much flock grass have I inadvertantly tipped onto the workroom floor over the years!) and generally looks better.

I am certainly willing to pay the price for them.
