From this thread it was suggested that a baby naming contest be held here on TMP. I have approached the GF/SO who is carrying the baby about the idea and the concept and she said it sounded like a good idea because we both have very different ideas on what a good name is for a baby. So, with the criteria being – what should we name our off-spring. I am looking for suggestions on this thread so that the Editor can have a poll on the subject. A few criteria for everyone so you don't go about suggesting the wrong names or at least the wrong gender names. Further, I'd like to keep it nice – so nothing vulgar or rancid as far as names like "Octopussy" or "Pussy Galore" or other silliness, and such.

Here are the criteria: We are most likely (90%+) having a girl based upon the second ultra-sound this past week. Second, if anyone wishes to contribute to a college fund – that would be awesome and appreciated. We will accept charity here – we have 5 already and while I make decent money, college tuition is always a nice gesture. Third – there is nothing concrete about anything – just a poll on the subject, suggestions are nice, and we will consider the top five names from the poll – if the esteemed Editor is willing to assist/participate in this endeavor.

Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers – I'm going to need them over the coming years – and perhaps I will be able to add a female gamer to the ranks at some point in the future! Cheers!

I always liked Gwendolyn, or Gwen for short. Genvieve is also a good name, but different. Then again there's Paula (little spear) which seems like a good name for a wargamer's daughter.

Agesilaus27 Mar 2011 9:44 p.m. PST

We like amazon names for girls.
Penthesilea – Amazon princess at Troy
Lykopis – She Wolf
Andromeda – Ruler of Men

She Who Will/Must Be Obeyed At A Later Date?

I'm fond of Robin, Tracy, and Desiree. April and Misty are pretty cool too, but may be kind of Time and weather sensitive…

Old Bear27 Mar 2011 10:47 p.m. PST

Olivia is a nice name for a girl.

Grand Duke Natokina27 Mar 2011 11:06 p.m. PST

Somewhat depends on the last name.
I would vote for Jennifer or Lynn.

Mathilda. "Mattie" amongst friends.

Jimmy da Purple28 Mar 2011 2:19 a.m. PST

I liked Matilda, but my wife realized I was going to name our daughter after a tank..

kreoseus228 Mar 2011 2:38 a.m. PST

Cant offer a sugestion without knowing the last name, as you can end up with some very bad combinations.

John D Salt28 Mar 2011 2:53 a.m. PST

I am well accustomed to my suggestions for baby names being rejected, but I suppose that "Vorbis the Slayer" really is a boy's name.

All the best,

John.

Connie is a great name you don't hear much any more.

Cerdic28 Mar 2011 3:48 a.m. PST

Matilda isn't only a tank! Several medieval queens were called Matilda…

The night before my mate's daughter was born we were down the pub.

The converation got round to what they were going to call the baby – they had opted not to know the baby's gender

As my friend was a lager drinker I suggested that if it was a boy then call it Carl or Miguel after Carlsberg or San Miguel and if it was a girl then …

Well my mate's wife gave birth to a beautiful little girl and they called her Stella

After yourself of course.
"By Jove"

pphalen28 Mar 2011 6:04 a.m. PST

I like Katelyn. Anastasia is a pretty name, if you have a good last name for it.

We had a hard time naming my daughter, since I had to avoid names that sounded like strippers or porn stars (Crystal, Savannah) or ex-girlfirends…

21eRegt28 Mar 2011 7:44 a.m. PST

I'd look to Greek mythology for inspiration. Danae, Calypso, Daphne, Leto, Niobe, Penelope, etc. Most lend themselves to "cute" nicknames as well. Dani, Cal, Penny, and so forth.

Cheers

Jovian128 Mar 2011 8:04 a.m. PST

Okay, for those who need a last name before making a suggestion – it is Robertson. As for some of the suggestions already: My sister's name is Elizabeth, my GF's name is Jennifer Lynn, so those three are pretty much strikes. Keep them coming!

richarDISNEY28 Mar 2011 8:24 a.m. PST

Elizabeth
Victoria
Daphnie

Or… just to throw it out there…

Richardina?
Richardette?
laugh But I am biased to these names… wink

Either way, I'm sure it will be a good name.

My favorite girl's names

Sonya
Zoie

Buzzkill28 Mar 2011 3:58 p.m. PST

I have two daughters, Madelyn (Maddie) and Leah, so I am obviously partial to those names. I really wanted to name my last daughter "Kate", I really like that name but I also don't like giving my kids nick names as their full name, so I was going to go with Katelyn or Katherine and then call her Kate, but when she was born we couldn't make any of those names stick so we went with Leah which fits her perfectly. I consider myself somewhat of an expert on this subject, I have 5 children, so I have agonized over names each and every time we had a child. What works for us is to make a list of names that we both like that we take to the hospital and then when the baby is born we try out names on them to see what "clicks" or fits them best.

Grand Duke Natokina28 Mar 2011 8:35 p.m. PST

In case the 10% chance of a boy happens, Jim or Mike or John are all good choices.
Weaselhoffen.

Ranger32229 Mar 2011 7:02 a.m. PST

My wife and I were going to name a little girl Alexis Elizabeth…we got two boys instead. And there won't be a third if she has anything to say about it.

I still like Alexis though…and Buzzkill's "Leah" is a beautiful name.

pphalen29 Mar 2011 8:21 a.m. PST

Jim or Mike or John are all good choices.

But every Tom, Dick, and Harry have those names…

21eRegt29 Mar 2011 9:36 a.m. PST

If it's a boy, how about:

Darius
Earendel
Paris
Jason

recon3529 Mar 2011 3:09 p.m. PST

Hannah, Anne or Rachael

Given up for good29 Mar 2011 3:19 p.m. PST

I went for Alice Helen for number one and Richard Jake for number two grin

I also like Sue, Kate, Kat and Wendy

Though the latter did cause an upset when I told the 'owner' her moniker was a made up name for a certain book!

Jovian129 Mar 2011 4:00 p.m. PST

Keep the names coming – we are in need of inspiration here – so the more names the better!

psiloi Supporting Member of TMP29 Mar 2011 4:37 p.m. PST

Rebbekah Jade

Jennifer
Coral

Good luck!

I might suggest Kathleen or Abigail.

Agesilaus,
And when Jovian buys her a pony, we can name it Rosinante.
Weaseloffen.

OldGrenadier Fezian29 Mar 2011 6:40 p.m. PST

Well we went with 'Moe' and 'Larry', so my input is kinda not really needed…

I kid :)

Jovian108 Apr 2011 8:18 p.m. PST

Hmm, no more suggestions? Time to start compiling a list.

ochoin deach08 Apr 2011 10:50 p.m. PST

How about Gormenghast?

It rolls off the tongue.

ochoin deach09 Apr 2011 2:13 a.m. PST

or 'Scotch'. It rolls around the tongue.

Dasher15 Apr 2011 2:03 p.m. PST

Adolph.
Somebody needs to redeem it, and nobody remembers Adolphe Menjou anymore (widely regarded as "the best-dressed maan in the world" in the 1930's).
