Imagine, if you will, a police state like the "Republic of Gilead", but existing in the early to mid 21st century (instead of the 1990s – as portayed in film). link link wn.com/The_Handmaid's_Tale link link QUESTIONS: What 15mm figures would work best for portraying a neo-fascist American troops in 2015-2020 or so? Or would it be better to go with current modern US troops and just paint them up in grey shades (like the Panzer grey of WWII German uniforms, or the Starship Trooper uniforms)? Thanks, Dan |

I prefer a Neo-communist police state – they are so much better at being evil (a 9.1 compared to Neo-Fascist at 8.9) BUT Even Better – a Neo-Libertarian dictatorship! Gracias, Glenn |

Personally, I'd use military equipment – things like Strykers, Bradleys, helicopter gunships and the like – and infantry, but in police colours. While black or dark blue would probably be more "realistic" as up-armed SWAT units, having a couple of Strykers and a squad of US army infantry models in NYPD blue, or some Apaches in CHP brown might be more visually interesting. Save the ominous black for federal special units (or paint those in overall red or blue, depending on the political alignment of your future fascists). Grey might be more traditionally "Hollywood police state", but it's boring to paint. Plus, Ford sedans in matte black – that seems to be the indicator of a breakdown in society (see: Robocop picture , A Handmaid's Tale, Dark Angel etc). Now you've got me wanting to paint some Warriors and Scorpions up in blue and yellow "battenburg" patterns: link |

This is only a decade in the future, use modern US troops for troops. I think the main thing which says 'fascist' is a lot of flags, ideally in red, white and black. So deck out your buildings in the new look black, white and red stars & stripes. Posters of the dear leader all over the place are also helpful, as are shuffling groups of enemies of the state chained together in stripy outfits for forced labour. Proper secret police naturally wear black and drive cars with tinted windows. |

SWAT figs even in normal colors. They're designed to be intimidating. Beat cops in dark colors such as blue, black, dark green or even a charcoal grey. Army in a dark camo or all one color, preferably a 'traditional' military color such as dark blue or dark green. Vehicles in dark colors as well. The only relief from the dark colors would be badges identifying the units, usually in a bright contrasting color. IMO of course. |

The Gramaton Clerics from Equilibrium made as "Nots" by Rebel Mike would be cool for this. |

It does make for an awfully drab-looking table, though. That was why I suggested using military figures in police colours. My justification (other than being more interesting to paint) would be that the police are up-gunned as part of the government's crackdown on citizens' freedoms, but the uniform colours are retained to try to make thinsg look like "business as normal". You also need some trenchcoat- or gratcoat-wearing "!political officers" to make sure the grunts shoot demonstrators like they're supposed to. Possibly also some airbrushed, bleached-teeth-wielding media 'personalities' who parrot the Party line on TV. |

I would think, based on some of the dictatorships out there, that there would be different "orders" of police Ordinary cops – conventional police uniform or military uniform but in police colours Interior Ministry – trench-coated goons Riot/Intervention/SWAT – SWAT uniforms in dark colours |

I would use Rebel Minis Titan Marines
Panzer Gray armor, english uniform cloth (better contrast in 15mm than feldgrau), and bright red 'eyes'
Oh, wait, that's the Kerberos (Jin-Roh). Very intimidating. If you really want to paint Battenburg (or other retro-reflectives), get some Vallejo Metallic Medium and Reaper Pearl White. Take whatever yellow you like and mix it about 50/50 with metal medium. White retro-reflective is Pearl White 50/50 with metal medium. |

I'd use Swat fellers with submachine guns as opposed to full on Army fellers. Another good idea would be guys in suits looking Matrix agents as men in black types. |

Layer the oppression. Criminal Investigations Police (current street cops) – Tan or Dark Blue uniforms. Political Crimes Police (Think SS or Commissars) some great coats, some "detective" in suits, and some heavier armed light armored/SMG types. Basic Black or Dark Grey outfits. Subversive Weapons Attack Teams (SWAT thru light powered armor type with pistols thru LMGs, gas grenades (non-lethal of course,) and breaching equipment. Some vehicles with Water Cannons and non-lethal microwave or other vehicular mounted crowd dispersal weapons. OD green or Blue-Black outfits. MPD – Think MVD – Ministry of Political Defense with APCs, Armored cars, APC paddy wagons, and possibly Light armor (think Sheridan) where the lack of AFV opposition would not necessitate MBTs. Urban camo outfits. Armed Forces. Uniform of choice. Oppressive enough? Yes, I have put some thought into this

Nothing says evil like black SUVs. If you really want to strike a pose for terror, put a soccer ball sticker on the back. Truly a symbol of oppression! Seriously, you can't have your suits parading around in APCs. If you want, add lots of antennas. |

Well, Warbeads, the Kerberos were the equivalent of your SWAT teams. You still had regular police, but when the protesters got too out of hand, the Capital Police (ie, kerberos) would show up and shoot everything that moved. Of course, my Kerberos use German WW2 vehicles, but they're in the 1960s. I just need to get an image file of the Kerberos shield so I can get decals made. But if I was really feeling evil, I'd paint the gas-masks white
does anyone remember the "Mickey Mouse the SWAT grenadier" photo? All the riot police had white gas masks, but this one grenadier had added two 'ears' to his helmet
with the black 'eyes' and 'nose', it looked far too much like mickey packing a 37mm revolver grenade launcher! |
