I'm painting up the Chasseur batallion of the Velites of the Royal Guard for our Wagram game next year, but I'm finding it difficult to source information regarding the use of eagles/flags.

The only info I've found so far is from Napflags that states that the Velites didn't have a flag. No mention of an eagle, though. Would they have had an eagle on the top of a bare staff?

Any help would be appreciated.

They may have had fanions – Rawkins* gives some very specific measurements and details so he appears to be using a source of some kind. However, these are very small – less than 60cm square.
They are stated to have received flags in 1813, but a comment in the Napoleon Series website says that they left them at home on campaign (like the French lights were supposed to).

*I know that Rawkins isn't infallible!

Thanks Cardinal H. and Swampster,

I've since had the Cardinal's info. confirmed from another source, and Swampster, I don't think I'm going to go to that much detail, but thanks anyway!

I found this topic somewhere I don't remember where exactly:

---the Chasseur Velites had a Swallow-tailed Fanion, white with a green fringe. The decoration on both sides was the Coat of Arms (as in Neapolitan's flag) over a bugle horn(silver) and grenade(gold) device with the words Veliti and Reali in silver in the two "tails"---

I got even a pics got for a russian book, all ciryllics notes in which they show that fanion, and I'm tryng to recreate the pattern for my Velites here: link
Basically it looks like a french dragoon flag.

I'm not sure about this part: …over a bugle horn(silver) and grenade(gold)…
And since Velites got 2 battalions 1 of grenadiers and 1 of chasseur, probably I'll do 2. 1 with gold granade and 1 with silver bugler.

Hope this helps.
