I am looking for good sculpts at a reasonable price, the Foundry animal figures are very good but at almost $25 USD a pack for either a single or only three critters I am hesitant to go that route. Who else makes a good assortment of African beasts?

Primaeval Designs sold through Acheson Creations has some really cool 28mm animals and their prices tend to be quite reasonable. Many of their larger creatures are done in a beautiful resin.

North Star now sell the old HLBSC range.

They are very nice. Couple of examples:

They do all sorts. Crocs, Cape Buffalo, Meerkats, Cheetahs, loads of things.

Mega Miniatures make some, though I think they are more 25mm from what I have seen at my FLGS.

You may be able to manage the animals that come in the toobes. They come in a variety of sizes. Then there's the Dollar store brands. I have had some very good luck with those in the past. Lastly you could check out the stuff offered by Schletum.

When I decided to go in for safari animals about 12 years ago I found that most of the metal figures available were very small.

So, by visiting every toy rack from the dollar stores to the high end educational toy shops I equipped my African veldt. I have some really nice 50 cent elephants from a dollar store in Atlanta!

Chances are you'll find that you may need to use some metal figures for the more finely detailed animals; rhinos, hippos and elephants – look for toys!

Be sure and check into Irregular Miniatures 25 mm range. I don't think you need to worry so much on the difference between 25 and 28 for beasties unless you really want to. You'll find they have a good selection. And second the Mega Minis – I am eternally disappointed there isn't a similar selection of wild beasts available in 15 mm, although, again, Irregular has the best variety for such.

Make sure you get the Big 5: Elephant, Giraffe, Lion, Cape Buffalo, and either Cheetah or Leopard (depends on who you ask).

If you get some 'lions' that are too small for your taste, paint them as leopards!
