Steve Jackson Games has announced the newest version of Ogre!

sjgames.com/ill/a/2011-03-12

Let the destruction commence!

DesertScrb12 Mar 2011 9:30 a.m. PST

Thanks for the heads up!

Muah ha ha12 Mar 2011 9:45 a.m. PST

Meh. Steve says a lot of things. I'll believe it when I see it.

Also, he wants $100 USD for a wargame without even any minis.

Nah. You can keep that, Steve.

SBminisguy12 Mar 2011 9:49 a.m. PST

Coolness!

CPT Jake12 Mar 2011 9:57 a.m. PST

Great. Up-front warning it will be a limited release and very expensive. It also sounds like they went with those card Ogres they showed before, which I personally didn't like. Might as well use the miniatures vice the card ones. I doubt it would have really had much of an effect on the price either.

PDF link has more info.

How about they release minis to finish out their line?

Jake (who is not too happy with the news though I am a HUGE Ogre fan.)

jfleisher12 Mar 2011 10:02 a.m. PST

I don't think 100 is out of line for what they are saying is in the box. Have you priced the reprint of War in the Pacific? $420.00…

I'll be using miniatures as well, don't care for the cardboard Ogres much either.

Perhaps the new version will spur interest in the miniatures line as well.

Joe5mc12 Mar 2011 10:26 a.m. PST

I would love to get this, but since I would invariably play with miniatures, I can't see spending $100 USD for the books and maps. It would be nice if you could just get the books for people who basically have all the other components already.

Will see, I am one of those suckers who originally bought GURPS Russia because it was a limited-edition! Good book, but I never used it.

Battle Works Studios12 Mar 2011 10:37 a.m. PST

Price is reasonable for the contents, but not terribly appealing to anyone who's still got the original versions. Lack of minis is a non-issue for me – GEV in particular is a hex-and-counter boardgame, not a set of minis rules, and minis + stacking rules = Bad Idea to me.

Still, nice to see Steve spending Munchkin profits on something other than yet more Munchkin/Chez Geek.

That can kiss mine too. Here's my rule, if I'd be embarrassed to tell my girlfriend I paid that much, I don't buy it.

This is dumb. A fool and his money.

DesertScrb12 Mar 2011 11:01 a.m. PST

Always with the negative waves, Moriarity.

povstq12 Mar 2011 11:03 a.m. PST

Thanks for the great news!

Caesar12 Mar 2011 11:10 a.m. PST

If you are still into board games -- as I am -- then you know 100 dollars isn't a bad price for a good board game with high quality components, these days. Agricola is loaded and comes with a price tag of $70. USD Europe Engulfed is a $100 USD board game that is certainly worth the price.
That being said, SJG tends to go with cheap parts and high price, so we'll have to see.

The rules and supplements are available as pdf downloads, as it is. So those interested in miniatures only game can purchase those. The problem with the miniatures is that the supply is not consistent.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP12 Mar 2011 11:18 a.m. PST

Personally I don't have interest in this unless the rules have changed. Otherwise I use miniatures to play Ogre so the rest of the game is of no value to me.

That being said, if I put on my board gamer hat this is possibly a good value depending on how the maps and counter sheets turn out.

ming3112 Mar 2011 11:25 a.m. PST

OGRE!!! I am excited .

oldhans11712 Mar 2011 11:33 a.m. PST

I paid something like $2.99 USD for my first copy of Ogre.

Battle Works Studios12 Mar 2011 11:33 a.m. PST

To be honest, the upcoming re-release of Awful Green Things is even more exciting to me.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP12 Mar 2011 11:59 a.m. PST

$100?

Nope, not interested. But then, I still have my original copy and my miniatures too, so I don't really have a need/want for this.

What would be best is if Steve uses this as a "Nostalgia" sales "Interest leader" to prove that the original version is still viable as a game.

(What is it with wargame publishers that they somehow forget that games can remain steady sellers for decades? Jeez, how long has Risk been around?)

Muah ha ha12 Mar 2011 12:00 p.m. PST

THAT I'd be interested in, provided Steve doesn't want $100 USD a set.

sjgames.com/awfulgreen

Says AGTFOS is In Production, but it's not up in Warehouse 23 yet. It was in last month's Game Trade, and IIRC due in stores either March or April, so soon. $25 USD is a more than reasonable price IMO.

evilcartoonist12 Mar 2011 12:20 p.m. PST

I prefer to have minis for that price. Or at least SJ could have done something such as these homebrew pieces: link

PDF route for me.

flooglestreet12 Mar 2011 12:25 p.m. PST

IIRC one of the big selling points of OGRE was that it cost about $3.00. That meant you got a lot of play value for your money. Maybe I'm just showing my age, but I associate $100.00 USD price tags with unplayably huge games about Russia in the second world war that sounded like a good idea at first glance.

Paint it Pink12 Mar 2011 2:24 p.m. PST

I'm all for this. A $100 USD bucks, so what, I'll save (actually don't need to as I'll just slap it on the plastic). A new edition with big hexes will make it easier to draw new players in etc.

Yes I have the originals, yes all of the originals. Yes I have miniatures too, and the Ogre miniatures rules too, but this is my hobby that I get a lot of pleasure from, and having a new edition to buy will be fun.

IMO, pleasure is long remembered after the price has been forgotten.

The Beast Rampant12 Mar 2011 2:35 p.m. PST

A watched pot never boils! I have been watching for an announcement on this for ages.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Fabe Mrk 212 Mar 2011 4:53 p.m. PST

I might buy this even if it is $100, maybe now they can get to work on a new edition of "Car Wars".

Only Warlock12 Mar 2011 5:26 p.m. PST

I SAW THIS IN DEVELOPMENT LAST YEAR AT STEVE JACKSON'S STUDIO.

I brought my 1st edition i bought in the late 70s and he was kind enough to sign it (His studio is about 20 mins from my office)

It's the real deal. He even had prototype Laser-cut Balsa Constructable OGRES!

He had terrain overlays to create Geomorphic Maps, Large Color troop and vehicle counters, and lots more.

FIRST DAY PURCHASE.

Blackhawk112 Mar 2011 5:34 p.m. PST

I'm in

KJdidit12 Mar 2011 5:40 p.m. PST

Another voice that hopes this will bring a renewed interest in OGRE minis, with consistent stock of the more popular items. But I'm not going to hold my breath.

kokigami12 Mar 2011 5:43 p.m. PST

Well, I am unconvinced, but slightly more-so seeing the PDF sales pitch with pics. It's a maybe.

Battle Works Studios12 Mar 2011 6:01 p.m. PST

He had terrain overlays to create Geomorphic Maps

That's a huge plus for added replay value – and they're mentioned on the sell sheet too, so definitely in.

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP12 Mar 2011 6:31 p.m. PST

As long as it's all the link says then I'll get it.

OGRE Deluxe was such a disappointment.

sharkbait12 Mar 2011 6:39 p.m. PST

That's pretty pricey, but there does seem to be a lot included. I must admit that I've never owned/played OGRE, but I'm interested in this new edition.

Dragon Gunner12 Mar 2011 7:14 p.m. PST

I am interested, will wait to see the finished product and read some reviews.

Capt John Miller12 Mar 2011 7:42 p.m. PST

Steve Jackson's game OGRE may be released in a super deluxe edition. THAT is cool and all I have to say is this:

Fencer OGRE = domination

Muah ha ha12 Mar 2011 7:44 p.m. PST

One born every minute, I guess.

skippy000112 Mar 2011 9:15 p.m. PST

None of you have bought GDW's Europa or WWI mega-games? Some people spend more on Magic, The Gathering cards.

I would like to see a 100$ version of Triplanetary.

Battle Works Studios12 Mar 2011 9:24 p.m. PST

Given that a booster box of almost any CCG costs more than $100, that's a good point.

Triplanetary by itself maybe not worth $100, but bundled with Star Fist and (say) Orbit Wars from Space Gamer, with some extra scenarios and optional rules? That I'd consider.

evilmike12 Mar 2011 9:29 p.m. PST

I am so getting this.

As for price….hell, Dust Tactics costs about $60-70 dollars, most large board games (especially the Euro games) cost more.

It's a deal, considering what you get.

Muah ha ha12 Mar 2011 9:44 p.m. PST

So we're dumber than CCG players?

JimSelzer12 Mar 2011 11:28 p.m. PST

That can kiss mine too. Here's my rule, if I'd be embarrassed to tell my girlfriend I paid that much, I don't buy it.

This is dumb. A fool and his money.

At Least some of us don't have to ask our significant others permission to pursue our hobby. I don't ask -tell her what she can buy for makeup she does not have to give me permission to buy games

Bunkermeister Supporting Member of TMP13 Mar 2011 12:49 a.m. PST

I'd pay $100 USD for a very cool 1/72nd scale Ogre, and a dozen different infantry, but not for little cut outs.

Battle Works Studios13 Mar 2011 6:49 a.m. PST

So we're dumber than CCG players?

Not what I said at all. Card gamers regularly drop ~$120+ buying a box of whatever new set has just come out for their pet game. Ogre's a one-shot thing that isn't going to have an equally-expensive supplement come out three-four times a year for the rest of eternity. Apples and oranges – CCGs (and "living" card games, to a lesser degree) have a lot more maintainance cost involved than boardgames.

You sure do seem desperate to convince people of what a bad deal Ogre is. Steve Jackson kill your dog or something? And why the change to your screen name in mid-thread? You were Horse You Rode In On when this started.

skippy000113 Mar 2011 7:56 a.m. PST

Ogre is also a rpg supplement for GURPS. Yes, a Orbit War, Triplanetary, Star Fist combo would be nice. I have all these…somewhere…
I remember when 20$ for Strategy 1 was considered astronomical. I was making $1.65 USD a hour.

flooglestreet13 Mar 2011 8:53 a.m. PST

You hit my weak point. I would definitely consider a $100 USD Triplanetary, but it would have to have a lot of bells and whistles.

Muah ha ha13 Mar 2011 9:49 a.m. PST

At Least some of us don't have to ask our significant others permission to pursue our hobby. I don't ask -tell her what she can buy for makeup she does not have to give me permission to buy games

That's my standard for self-discipline. You can have another, or none at all if you like.

Card gamers regularly drop ~$120+ buying a box of whatever new set has just come out for their pet game.

So I hear.

You sure do seem desperate to convince people of what a bad deal Ogre is.

Just having a hard time seeing a classic $3 USD wargame hitting $100. USD while Steve explains why it isn't even up to the standard of a Euro-game, and some of you seem to love it.

<>Steve Jackson kill your dog or something?

I still have nightmares.

And why the change to your screen name in mid-thread?

I'm a free spirit.

You guys can, of course, but whatever you want. I'm just still a little stunned. Like Bunkermeister said, for nice (even if simple) minis, I could see this, but to gush over Steve giving out cardboard cut-outs for $100? Hmm…

Muah ha ha13 Mar 2011 9:58 a.m. PST

I guess this is really what gets me, and, again, it is just a matter of personal preference, I suppose, but it still leaves me shaking my head.

One thing Steve DID DO RIGHT was Ogre Lite, which is still free. e23.sjgames.com/checkout.html When I want to play Ogre, I just grab this, some small sf tanks and infantry (and a bigger one for the Ogre) and off I go, with a good set of rules and a very nice set-up.

Now, if you guys are talking about buying this thing to be loyal to Steve, hey, power to ya. The world needs more of that.

Coelacanth193813 Mar 2011 10:32 a.m. PST

I'm not buying it.

Ghostrunner13 Mar 2011 10:35 a.m. PST

Ogre was one of my favorite games years ago.

I still have a pretty extensive collection of the miniatures – a lot of them are still in sealed boxes.

Wonder if this release means they'll be in demand again?

Pity they don't release this set with plastic sprues for the units – bet that would sell!

Anyway – hope this goes well for them, but not sure I'll invest in it if it doesn't add to the game.

Personal logo javelin98 Supporting Member of TMP13 Mar 2011 11:30 a.m. PST

I'm disappointed. I think this is a missed opportunity for SJG to bring fresh blood into OGRE. Younger gamers these days expect plastic toys, and frankly, I want them, too! Even if there were just a couple sprues of counter-scale (say, 2mm or 3mm) minis that would be affixed tot the counters themselves, that would make a huge difference.

It looks to me like this is aimed at the bearded git demographic driven by nostalgia. A limited run makes sense in that case, but still, why go half-way? This could have been excellent as a way to re-energize OGRE, but instead it will never be more than a curiosity to trot out at cons.

CPT Jake13 Mar 2011 11:54 a.m. PST

FASA gave us plastic grav tanks for Renegade Legion: Centurion at one point. I can't help but believe SJG is doing at least as well now as FASA was back then.

The cohort packs (selling the figures without the game) could have been done as well, so folks could have expanded forces, just bought minis, and SJG could have gotten more sales.

Jake

Artraccoon13 Mar 2011 6:14 p.m. PST

I not so sure about $100 USD for a 3Dcardboard Ogre game either.

Considering that the Battletech 25th Anniverssary Box Set is coming out soon at $50, and it's got a fair number of plastic minis in it(24 mecha). The price tag on that product is great for the 24 mecha alone! I gotta think that's the direction SJG should have gone, especially for $100. USD

For those that compare the price to games like Europa, well…I love Ogre, but Ogre is no Europa.
