Are the helmets illustrated here link metal or leather?

Metal.

Many Osprey's have notes on the plates at the rear of the book. Given the note to see plate commentaries, I assume the one including this plate is one of them. Probably worth reading anything included there or comparing the plate with photos of artifacts in the book that the artist may have used for inspiration.

Indeed, it might well be worth reading Trevino's (the author's) comments on Iberian helmets (which are split between the main text and the notes on the plates, by the way).

Suffice it to say that there is a reason the illustrator did not clearly show the material as one thing or another.

Sinew helmets, presumably cloth or leather covered are mentioned.

Personally, I go for leather, sometimes with metal trimmings for the infantry.

I also (as you can see) paint a lot white – see the picture in Connolly's book.

Cavalry I do a mix.

Also, some plumes are thought to be hair dragged through a hole in the top of the helmet, though I can't remember where I read that.

There are more pics of my stuff here if you care to rummage.

Hope this might help, or provide food for thought.
