I've had a line of some ECW chaps rather neglected in 15mm made, the Confederate Irish. These asserted their independece, or at least made efforts to do so, first from the crown, but then actually became royalist (sort of) when the king made them promises if they helped him in his fight with Parliament.

Their dress was quite distinctive, so existing ECW models generally won't do.

It's an interesting army because, although weak in Horse, it can function as a hybrid Pike-and-Shot/irregular army, with a potential to have very large numbers of traditional Irish fighting in loose order or skirmishing as "kerns," and may also have a healthy contingent of the fiercesome "Antrim Redshanks."

The line was sculpted, and painted for display, by my Irish Catholic confederate, "clibinarium." grin

Here's a preview of an infantry unit based for the popular new FoGR rules set:

Being cast now are:

1) Irish pistolier horse (mostly Anglo-Irish so in more typical European horseman's dress, but still rather badly equipped)

2) Irish high command mounted (commander in european garb, for Ormonde, etc, plus standard and muscian)

3) Irish high command mounted (commander in traditional Irish dress, for O'Neill, etc, plus standard and musician)

4) Dragoon nag and dismounted horseholder (one per base to make infantry with muskets Dragoons)

Next step will be to convert the Irish to serve with Montrose, adding broadswords and a few bonnets. Also some typical Scots pike and shot, and some Scottish type horse will be made, as these made up the bulk of Montrose's force. This expansion will of course permit the construction of Covenenting armies as well. We may even make a McColla model too, although players might prefer to simply use a 28mm Highlander for that. wink

The first batch is coming in the next few weeks! The Confederate Irish mounted in perhaps a month and a half or two. Stay tuned.

I see those Irish pikes and musketeers and think they would be ideal for gaming H Beam Pipers "Lord Kalvan". Must resist.

These are great models. You've given them a very distinctive look. Painting is superb too. Bravo!

Great stuff, I really like the Highlanders.

Well done! Well worth the wait. I look forward to the second batch. I will be ordering some.

Very nice!

Highlanders are great – better than most 28's!

corona6627 Feb 2011 3:06 p.m. PST

Hey, hey hey at last. And they look better than I'd hoped. Well done.

Etranger27 Feb 2011 7:00 p.m. PST

They do look good. I wouldn't have thought they'd need much change to represent Montrose's Irish Brigade as is.

khurasanminiatures27 Feb 2011 9:46 p.m. PST

They need broadswords and apparently they often replaced the peakless Irish hat with the bonnets they acquired in Scotland.

Really nice stuff. I particularly like the Highlanders. Any plans to do any Border Reiver types?

Oh Bugger28 Feb 2011 5:49 a.m. PST

Are you going to do lancers? Owen Roe's cavalry asked for armour instead he gave them lances.

clibinarium28 Feb 2011 5:56 a.m. PST

The boss will decide on those issues.

(By the way cheers Oh B**ger for your advice on the appearence of O'Neill)

khurasanminiatures28 Feb 2011 6:02 a.m. PST

Oh B, I'm building around the FoGR list, and it does not have lancers. Possibly because it's a "top down" rules set and the units are graded for effect rather than what they carried with them. So some Irish cavalry may have carried lances, but they are graded as pistoliers.

But of course as I expand into the scots, there will be lancers.

By the way, clibinarium, Springsteen has no say in the production of this line!  grin

How big are these guys? Will they mix with Peter Pig- mid range size? Thx

Clibinarium, Glad to be of help. I think you have done a splendid job. I'm looking forward to your O'Neill figure.

I would think the Scots lancers will do fine.

Off topic on the FoGR list someone might want to think again. O'Neill's cavalry found themselves at a disadvantage against the Scots cavalry who had more pistols. He re equpped them as lancers and problem solved. I'm presuming he trained them as was his practice so a different troop types.
