Since the editorial winds are currently a bit more favourable to new boards than they were several years ago when we tried this before -- I'd like to propose a Giant Monster Board as a sub heading under Toy-Gaming, SF, and Fantasy.

For those of us who do like that the different boards allow us to easily scroll through older topics for a particular game type, a Giant Monster/Godzilla/Kaiju board would be very helpful. It is a distinct gaming category, but like Pulp or Horror, it falls under several larger headings. WIthout it's own home, related threads get scattered everywhere and so consequently really can't be searched by scrolling through the archives.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER26 Feb 2011 9:08 a.m. PST

More boards lovely.

Now that that's out of the way, sure.

Captain Gideon26 Feb 2011 9:09 a.m. PST

That sounds like a good idea miniMo I second what you said.

The Toy gaming board has only had ten active threads this month.

Please explain why it needs to be further sub-divided?

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP26 Feb 2011 10:12 a.m. PST

If all the giant monster topics were posted on the Toy Gaming board, it wouldn't need to be subdivided. But at a rough guess, only maybe half of them do. The bulk of the rest go into SF (which has long needed sub-dividing, it's pretty hopeless trying to scroll through that one), and then some into Fantasy and a few rare strays into Modern. In the current state, everyone, especially new players to the genre, are left guessing where to post.

So this suggestion is about helping to bring the posts together from their far-flung wanderings rather than sub-dividing.

darthfozzywig26 Feb 2011 11:51 a.m. PST

Hopeless scrolling through the SF board? I had no idea my abilities were so far above the norm.

I'm encouraged. :)

Dasher26 Feb 2011 12:27 p.m. PST

Sure, why not?
The worst that can happen is that after six months or so, it hasn't generated enough interest and it can be removed, but the best that could happen is that it generates more interest, more gaming, and maybe even helps bring in some new gamers.
So why not give it a whirl?

28mmMan26 Feb 2011 1:07 p.m. PST

I post such giant threads with a clear title to gain attention and usually post within the Toy and Collectible boards.

I appreciate a giant monster conversation as much if not more than most, but that said, there are a core of ten or so of us here on TMP.

Most giant monster threads include silly and useless comments from those not within the fold as it were…

Ask "What is your favorite giant monster miniature" and you will surely get a "Oprah" or a "big hamster" as you would any useful input.

So a separate board would cut down on some of the off topic silliness but there is just not enough traffic in my opinion to carry the motion.

But that said, I would offer that those who are interested in said subject start more threads and add more to the subject weight and in short order we will see if the genre rates a separate board.

Yay giant monsters!

If these images didn't get you all happy and there are not a couple pages of posts in a short time then most likely we of the giant monster, mecha, ultramen, etc. crowd will have to be happy with other boards of interest to post our big fun :)

Boromirandkermit26 Feb 2011 2:58 p.m. PST

What awesome links! Thanks 28mm Man – love the pictures.

I've now found my desktop wallpaper for the next few months. :)
Cheers,
Ben.

I live to serve and serve to live :)

Welcome to the giant monster fold.

Rogue Zoat26 Feb 2011 3:39 p.m. PST

Awesome pics, 28mm Man! ^_^

What's the site?

Smokey Roan26 Feb 2011 3:46 p.m. PST

I am all for a Kaiju Board! There are more than ten of us, I tell you what!

28mmMan26 Feb 2011 4:38 p.m. PST

"what's the site?"

Giant Monster Attack link

As far as the Giant Monster Board…I would commit to at least one thread a day for the first year if that would help :)

But talk of new boards is instantly brushed aside at this point "oh not this again" is the automatic comment.

Fisherking26 Feb 2011 4:59 p.m. PST

Would we be allowed to discuss small and medium sized monsters on the proposed board?

Fisherking26 Feb 2011 5:07 p.m. PST

Proposed topics for new board:

1. Does normal Godzilla already qualify as a giant monster or only versions that have somehow been significantly enlarged over the normal version.

2. Do bratty misbehaved rugrats count or once again do they have to have been freakishly enlarged through unusual mishap or diabolical scientific experimentation?

28mmMan26 Feb 2011 5:23 p.m. PST

Small monster discussion would be tolerated with no more than one thread a week.

1. All versions of Godzilla must be accepted just by historically necessity.

2. Bratty rugrats never count except for a timely pow pow or some sit in the corner.

Thanks for playing :)

Captain Gideon26 Feb 2011 10:34 p.m. PST

Does that mean we have to talk about that CRAP movie in 1998?

Captain Gideon

Rogue Zoat27 Feb 2011 8:14 a.m. PST

… I thought it was ok… (looks ashamed)

Space Monkey27 Feb 2011 12:34 p.m. PST

Great pictures! I've chosen one for a desktop image as well.

I'm not sure of the need for a new board… but I'll go wherever the Kaiju go.
If I were going to start a thread I'd assume it would go in SciFi discussion… but lately I've been interested in getting giant monsters into some 6mm fantasy games as enormous magical constructs ala 'Shadow of the Collosus'.
Most of the stuff I play with isn't sold as 'toys' though… so yeah, classification within another heading is tricky.

StarfuryXL527 Feb 2011 2:47 p.m. PST

Most giant monster threads include silly and useless comments from those not within the fold as it were…

So they're pretty much like any other thread on TMP.

28mmMan27 Feb 2011 3:03 p.m. PST

"Does that mean we have to talk about that CRAP movie in 1998?"

Don't hate the monster…I liked and still like Zilla and it spawned a decent animated/cartoon version with tons of interesting monsters.

Scorpio27 Feb 2011 3:29 p.m. PST

As a giant monster, I support this board.

Captain Gideon27 Feb 2011 7:35 p.m. PST

28mmMan I'm sorry but for me I really don't like that creature/Zilla,and there's nothing that anyone can say to change my mind but this is my choice so don't worry about me.

As for the cartoon eventhough I watched it I did'nt like it but like I said before that's my choice.

Captain Gideon

28mmMan27 Feb 2011 8:59 p.m. PST

No worries Capt, you like what you like :)

I wouldn't beat anybody up about it after all…there are plenty of giant monster types to fit everyone's taste.

I am not the biggest fan of the big robots or giant men.

Something for everyone :)

Space Monkey27 Feb 2011 10:13 p.m. PST

I am not the biggest fan of the big robots or giant men.
What?!!! No Ultraman?!!! No Mazinger?!!!

Boromirandkermit28 Feb 2011 1:52 a.m. PST

I have to admit, I'd draw the line at Zilla too… :P

I is wrong that I've seen all the Godzilla's and Gamera's many, many times but have never, ever seen an Ultraman??

Smokey Roan28 Feb 2011 5:26 a.m. PST

What the Hell's the matter with you, Matthew Broderick?

Not cool!

28mmMan28 Feb 2011 10:52 a.m. PST

Just to be clear here…in reference to Godzilla 1998, is the negativity towards the monster or the movie or both?

The movie was not an award winner but it certainly was not poo on the wall either.

But I will defend the monster…Zilla.

He looks better than 95%+ of the standard guy in body suit monsters.

He was inspired by Godzilla which does not offend me.

So all in all, I would be proud and happy to meet the haters on the giant monster city scape with my vinyl Zilla getting all stompy and grrrrr :)

Smokey Roan28 Feb 2011 11:04 a.m. PST

Blasphemy!

There are one or two points I'd like to make in support of said:

One: Kaiju are radiovores, NOT carnivores (no food supply could last at all if there were thousands of fish eating Kaiju swimming around. STOOOOPID!)

Two: I hated that scrawny, sickly blonde. Kept hoping Zilla stepped on her. (Hell, a grown adult human could have stepped on her, she weighed like 63 lbs)

Three: That Jean Claude Reno guy was the only bright spot. He was funny. (The French SF leader)

Four: Why would attack copters hover at Zilla's eye level, within grabbing range? Do they hover right off the end of a tank's barrel when attacking armor formations?

Five: Many local police departments have the infared and other scanning equiptment to find a closet with a pot plant and grow light in it, yet the military couldn't find a 200 ft tall radioactive monster behind the Chrysler Building?

28mmMan28 Feb 2011 11:15 a.m. PST

hmmm

answers :)

1. Kaiju are radiovores, NOT carnivores (no food supply could last at all if there were thousands of fish eating Kaiju swimming around. STOOOOPID!)…well sure…the fish were like catnip or sweet tarts not nutrition

2. yes she could have gotten squished…but this is not giant monster related, move this one to skinny blonde actress thread :)

3. French guy was fun…moves this to the French appreciation board

4. Zilla has a hypnotic gaze that draws people to him

5. Pot has been proven to kill brain cells where as Zilla damage was over in 139 min, so pot is a much great threat and as such rates better equipment and measures

rrarrr :)

Thieses28 Feb 2011 1:16 p.m. PST

As one of the "ten" I also support a Kaiju board.

Smokey I appreciate the reference to "Up from the depths". It is one of the greatest videos I have seen in years on youtube. :)

Zilla as a monster was not too bad, however it was not Godzilla. I have even used Zilla in GMR…as a victory condition (Who ever eats Zilla first gets double points for the kill )

28mmMan28 Feb 2011 4:14 p.m. PST

Wow all the Zilla hate :)

Too funny.

Well there are enough monsters, giant robots, and others to go around…tous pour un et un pour tous…vivent longtemps les monstres géants!

Space Monkey28 Feb 2011 4:45 p.m. PST

You have to draw the line at the Zilla thing, otherwise it's a slippery slope down to that Cloverfield POS.

28mmMan28 Feb 2011 5:18 p.m. PST

Whaaaaat! We have to hate Clover also!

How can you guys call yourselves giant monster fans and not like any and all giant monsters!

Zilla and Clover are giant and monsters…they deserve your attention and appreciation…not the movies in question per say, but the monsters…giant monsters, they do!

Darn it! Shame on you guys!

:)

Grand Duke Natokina28 Feb 2011 8:54 p.m. PST

Have your Giant Monster Board. I will stay with reality. Or at least Bongolesia.
Weaselhoffen.

Lion in the Stars28 Feb 2011 9:49 p.m. PST

I think the stated ideas are fine. Reducing spread and getting more people involved are good things.

Yes, I am actually voting *for* a new board, and I'm not really a huge giant monster fan.

28mmMan01 Mar 2011 7:12 a.m. PST

Hmmm ok.

If we are getting votes for a giant monster board from non-giant monster fans (nice joke there Lion…"I'm not really a HUGE giant monster fan" :) then perhaps it is time to ask Bill to consider a new board at least for a probationary period.

RRAararraraaar ooo run aaway its its Zilla! :)

Rogue Zoat01 Mar 2011 10:40 a.m. PST

Well I still think the '98 American movie was good. Including Maria Pitillo…..

And Cloverfield was good fun too. It's just a pity I don't like the mosnter. I felt somewhat elt-down after that awesome whale-like thing that circulated the interwibble beforehand.

But for a Kaiju- based board… well I don't mind but I'd certainly visit it regularly! :)

28mmMan01 Mar 2011 3:05 p.m. PST

"I felt somewhat let down after that awesome whale-like thing that circulated the interwibble beforehand"

I suspect you mean this one picture just by karmic chance I was just inspired this week by all my giant monster hunting to start a Kujira daikaiju (giant whale monster).

I was going to start from scratch but decided to get a whale model to start with and create a WIP picture log to help others if they want one for themselves.

This is the model I ordered link

***** (unrelated) For those looking for swarming types look at these, $3 USD each link

Will provide the first pics and write up once the whale arrives.

It would make a great thread on a giant monster board :)

Twig6601 Mar 2011 5:25 p.m. PST

I think of a Giant Monster film as one where the Giant Monster is a character in the film. As a character they obviously require acting, which requires an actor.

I don't mind Cloverfield as a disaster movie, it reminded me of The Poseidon Adventure, which I like. The American Godzilla film is very disapointing if you are expecting a Godzilla film. It is more Jurassic Park in a City than a film about a Giant Monster.

It can't just be a Hollywood Vs. Japan thing as I thought the recent King Kong was a good Giant Monster film.

Anyhow, I don't mind if there is a Giant Monster board or if things stay in Toy Gaming.

Andrew.

Lion in the Stars01 Mar 2011 11:34 p.m. PST

Yeah, the pun was intentional, I think. I was pretty tired when I wrote that line, and my best puns happen when I'm half-asleep and my "print buffer" has shut down.

It can't just be a Hollywood Vs. Japan thing as I thought the recent King Kong was a good Giant Monster film.
But Peter Jackson's King Kong was a remake, not a semi-original script.

Hollywood (in general) has forgotten how to write a story, IMO. What two movies dominated the Oscars in 2009? Avatar and Hurt Locker. Which one had the biggest budget and biggest sales, which one got all the technical oscars, and which one got all the people-skill oscars?

Rogue Zoat02 Mar 2011 11:28 a.m. PST

That's the one 28mm Man! And thanks for the spellign correction :P :D

I'd be interested in seeing your progress on ol' Kujira.

Space Monkey02 Mar 2011 4:25 p.m. PST

I like the whale version of the Clover monster better as well.
Twig's definition suits me… that the monster has to be a character in the movie… rather than a vague force that could just as well be a tidal wave/earthquake. So keep the Zilla…
It's not an anti-Hollywood thing. I'm fine with Q The Winged Serpent and all those atomic horror critters like Them and The Amazing Collosal Man. Even 'Attack of the 50 Foot Woman'… though she'd be kind of small in a Kaiju game.

What about creatures in movies like The Swarm… the enormous monster being the hive-mind made up of millions of tiny bits? How to represent for a game?

28mmMan02 Mar 2011 6:49 p.m. PST

Giant Monster Rampage link has a supplement for Swarms :)

Captain Gideon03 Mar 2011 9:15 a.m. PST

28mmMan I'm very sorry but to me I DON'T like Zilla or that movie in came in,and that's a personnal preference for me if I don't like something that's enough for me.

I've not seen Cloverfield so I won't comment on that film.

Captain Gideon

Space Monkey03 Mar 2011 12:41 p.m. PST

Giant Monster Rampage link has a supplement for Swarms :)
Wow! They've been busy! Lots of expansions to the GMR rules.
I was always a Monster Island fan and haven't really tried the GMR stuff.
Pitting superheroes against Kaiju has been something I've wanted to try ever since an old Superworld vs. Cthulhu article in Different Worlds.

orcafinn23 May 2011 2:12 p.m. PST

Just played in a Giant Monster game, and now looking to run one myself. Where can you find the monster figures? I am trying to work in the 4 inch to 6 inch range. Any suggestions?

28mmMan23 May 2011 2:25 p.m. PST

Ebay is your friend.

Hit the dollar stores…customize a couple dollar dinos into the perfect monster of your vision.

Most of the large craft/hobby stores carry the safari line of replicas, these are great and offer lots of potential safariltd.com

But if it just giant monsters you seek, as in movie themed monsters then start with a few google images searches and follow the links…find the ones you like and then the links will lead you to sources.

Godzilla Final Wars is a good place to begin a movie collection picture picture but they can get pricey.

Try the dollar store and make your own!

rgrgrgrgrggaaagaaarrw!

Space Monkey23 May 2011 2:30 p.m. PST

There are LOTS of vinyl daikaiju figures on Ebay… though they can get a bit pricey… some of them.
Do a Google for Kaiju figures…

I mostly use old Bandai plastic model kits… which can be had fairly easily/cheaply off of Ebay as well.

There are also the Monsterpocalypse figures from Privateer… but I think they are a bit smaller…

Edit: Damn Ipad slows me down…
28mm Man is right about making your own… I bought extra kits that I altered with greenstuff… and have a few critters made from Sculpy (a big unbaked wad of dark red Sculpey is great for Caltiki/The Blob/shoggoths).

GiantMonster23 May 2011 6:07 p.m. PST

If you are looking for something you can pick up right away try checking your local Toys R Us for Bandai USA's line of 6" vinyl Godzilla figures.
