These questions would seem to indicate Wargames Factory is behind them. Why would they or anyone be afraid to be up front about who they are? |

Why a separate "Amazon" sci-fi army? I wish you guys could get in your heads that modern & future armies include both male & female troopers (and troopers that are not all "white anglo-saxon"). Sorry, it's a pet peeve, I know, after all it is fantasy

Forget the Amazons. It is a stupid concept. Everything else, fine. |
BlackWidowPilot | 18 Feb 2011 12:46 p.m. PST |
Elaine, have you ever read Harry Harrison's The Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted? Harrison had an hilariously brilliant take on a matriarchal society where the gender roles were flipped, and had a scene involving a male soldier having a meltdown under combat stress as he confessed to Slippery Jim DeGriz that the only reason he (the soldier) had grown up as a "tom-girl" and joined the army had been to please his mother, and in fact he only ever really just wanted to get married and be a good househusband and raise a bunch of kids like his Dad had done! Leland R. Erickson
P.S. For what it's worth, my own sci-fi human forces are heavily integrated whenever possible unless they're troops recruited from a ethnically homogeneous colony world. Even then, there's usually a rational number of female and male troopers within said ranks for much the reason you cite. However, all-female or nearly all-female combat units are not without historical precedent (see the 125th Guards Bomber Regiment for example). But that's the beauty of sci-fi; *anything* goes IMHO. |

Scifi German Lingerie Football Amazons in 28mm? |

To be successful, I think that the line needs enough initial variety to separate it from the association with 'one-off' novelty purchases. This is a greater risk. Also, it means competing with GW, but with a price at circa 1USD/infantry this would not be a problem. Problem is, you would have to sell enough kits to cover the larger initial investment and make the desired profit. I think many people are tired of the 'one-hit wonders' that turn up and vanish, or the products that are produced for a couple years and then vanish into the obscurity of the second-hand market. If somebody did produce an 'alternate 28mm sci-fi line' with some staying power, it would be a hit
but this means a big upfront investment that has not been successful in the past. I hate to say this, but an associated rule set would help (not a big fan myself, but you would be competing with GW if you really wanted to make money.) Just some musings. I think the initial cost and staggering GW competition is why we have not seen more of this in the past (AT-43, Void, VOR, Warzone, etc.. all tried and failed eventually, sadly.) But enough doomsaying! Best of luck in your endeavors, I would certainly buy into a new line of affordable plastic 28mm sci-fi kits (with initial variety

But really in 300 years a lot of countries may not be around anymore so I would go with Force A vs Force B type figures, ala Pig Iron. |

Hmmmmm, might Osprey's upcoming relase of Tomorrow's War have something to do with this? In anycase, if we get some more good sets then I'm all for it – I took the survey. |
| AppleMak | 18 Feb 2011 3:40 p.m. PST |
Sounds interesting. I took the survey, and I might be persuaded back into Sci-Fi. Will they be available in the UK? And are they skirmish or 'big battle', do you know yet – it mentioned skirmish rules? |

As long as it is not Wargames Factory under the current management team, then I wish them the best of luck and hope to purchase their products soon. |

I don't really understand the whole "Force" options. I assume USMC will look like IG / "Aliens" Marines and Russian will look like VASA. There isn't really a sci-fi stereotype for either German or French, though, and if this is a 20th-century-in-space setting then the lack of Commonwealth forces is odd. Also – Why are 24 figure boxes more per troop than 20 figure boxes? Also – What I'd really like to see more of in 28mm is generic artillery (AA, howitzers, mountain guns, etc). Sold without crew, please. |
| mweaver | 18 Feb 2011 9:35 p.m. PST |
I will be pleased to see more human SciFi multi-part plastics. But the survey was a little odd, asking us to rank factions without knowing what they would look like. |
| Chevalier de la Terre | 19 Feb 2011 10:31 a.m. PST |
No British/Commonwealth? Chinese? Honestly, futuristic FFL and French are lame and Germans reek of the tired "nazi are kewl" crap. If anything, there should probably be a 'united' European force
and they'd probably be pacifist. All IMHO, of course ;) CdlT |

Survey done! It sounds very interesting, I was going to get some WF Greatcoat Troopers for some SciFi gaming, I got one box and then the meltdown happend, with further sets now looking uncertain I am looking for new ideas, this looks perfect to me, good luck. |

"Honestly, futuristic FFL and French are lame" Go tell that to a bar full of members of the Legion Etranger, then get back to us (if you can).
A dear friend of our family is a veteran of the Algerian War and was a paratrooper in the 14th RCP. He's in his 70s now, and still splits firewood for his home by hand almost daily. He's a splendid human being, *and* I would *not* want him mad at me. "and Germans reek of the tired "nazi are kewl" crap."
Um, actually, no the don't necessarily do, and knowing the bunch behind this company, no, they *won't* carry any such stench

" If anything, there should probably be a 'united' European force
and they'd probably be pacifist. "
Um, how much European history have you studied again, dude? Circa 200 or 300 years is a very big window where quite a bit can happen. IIRC the last time much of Europe was unified under a single government more or less that was *Napoleon* and even I know just how long it took to get that little Corsican and his supporters under control (and how messy the whole process really was in the bargain).
All you need is the right wrong sort of person in the right wrong sort of position of influence and power at the right time and yes, all sorts of European-inflicted mayhem can and will ensue if actual European history is any guide

Human Sci-Fi plastics and neo-modern plastics represents an almost limitless potential market. WGF got a bit off the ground with their Shock Troops, but the poor quality of the sculpts put me off buying them. Now, bring me something I can use for my innumerable conversion projects (ECW/Napoleonic infantry with sci-fi weapons), and you've got a sale! A modern armed civilian kit would also be good. @Leland you old bastard! It's good to see you again! |
| Rolling Thunder | 24 Feb 2011 12:16 p.m. PST |
@CelticPagan: I personally dislike the Shock Troopers. The models are too camp – hands are too big, poses are too stilted
I sincerely hope this company produces better. Incidentally, why can't you tell us who it is your working for? |

@ElaineP: From your lips to the Gaming Gods' ears! As far as I'm concerned any SF set of figures should be a near even mix of male and female figures unless their background fluff explains a reason they shouldn't be. When we were working with the artist to do the cover of the pre-release version of Tomorrow's War, we absolutely demanded that one of the figures be a woman and that she be engaged in COMBAT, not acting as medic or tech or what have you. We also demanded that she not be a pin-up girl but have HUMAN woman proportions and that she be clad in the same armor as the guys, not a Sports Illustrated Girls Only version. We've carried the same requirements over to the Osprey cover and have also required that at least half of the interior art feature female soldiers in combat. This has long been a pet peeve of mine, too, Elaine. Now that I have a chance, I'm trying to put my money (and Osprey's) where my mouth is. - Shawn. |
