Before Wargames Foundry revamped its webpage it carried a miscellaneous section that included a model of a 'Shark-medium' submersible craft, otherwise known as a submarine (HMS SEADRAGON), with a British Officer supping a mug of tea ("Gentleman Jim" Maguire – DA9/1). It may have been painted by Kevin Dallimore. The submarine came from a company that produced other craft (Orca-1, Eel-2, etc.) in that range.

What is the name of the company, is it still in business, and does anyone have a picture of said submersible? Phew! Thank you in advance.

John Treadaway20 Jan 2011 4:17 p.m. PST

As far as I'm aware it was by Flagship games and – although I can't find a picture at present – I'll see what I can find and, in extremis, I'll post one: becasue I'm lucky enough to own it (along with the chap drinking tea!). And yes it was painted by Kevin Dallimore.

I remember the pictures you are talking about.

Think it was one of the submarines from Flagship Games' Pirates range. Believe that Scale Creep Miniatures have the rights but not sure how far they've got in bringing items back into production.

Captain dEwell20 Jan 2011 4:40 p.m. PST

John T, thank you.

A picture would be great. Did you add any flags, and the fancy 'iron work' and radio antenna around the hull? What are you doing with yours – display or gaming? And if the latter, what rules?

Thanks

D'Ewell

These are indeed the old submarines from Flagship and, yes, I now have the rights to them. Even better news we are now in production with some stock available now. I was waiting until I had stock of all 4 ready to go before making an announcement here on TMP.

The four subs are the Minnow, Eel, Shark and Orca. You can see pictures of most here:

The Dallimore was heavily added to with scratchbuilt components. The base models include a hull, tail fins, turret, periscope tower, gun and clear bubble portholes.

We also have the Sea Monsters (Dragon, Kraken, Icthyosaur) in stock as well. The Sea Dragon now has 4 parts – head, tail and two humps.

Customers in the UK please contact Mike at Black Hat Miniatures. He will be manufacturing them in the UK under license.

Any shots with a figure or anything giving them some scale?

Personal logo Extra Crispy Sponsoring Member of TMP20 Jan 2011 11:49 p.m. PST

Here is Dallimore's model with lots of extras he added. The figure is a 25mm British officer.

This is the Shark. The Orca is bigger. The Eeel smaller and the Minnow much smaller – perhaps 4" long.

I'll post dimensions of each model over the weekend.

Great, MORE temptation!

I just spent $91 USD (after discounts) and now I see these.

Gracias,

Glenn

I still have The Shark and the Orca somewhere time to add a few more and go search the depths.

John Treadaway21 Jan 2011 5:38 a.m. PST

Captain DEwell – as Extra Crispy said, the model I have is the actual one in the shot. Kevin added some railings from the supply that I'd bought to do this link

We had plans to do some ground based Martian stuff in 28mm with Cloudships in 28mm (and the Sub may have fitted into that)but that's on a very low back burner at the moment.

Beauty Aphid.

I may need to order some stuff from Scale Creep soon. Waiting on a bit of money for toys. I'm thinking the Minnow might do well for 15mm. Any photos of it?

Fergal21 Jan 2011 12:38 p.m. PST

Great stuff Crispy! On my shopping list.

Captain dEwell21 Jan 2011 1:57 p.m. PST

Thanks for all the replies. John T, you are one lucky guy to own that beauty. Nice one. And with all due respect to Flagship and Scale Creep Miniatures, the additional metalware, antennas, and flags make it a truly remarkable piece of work – along with the paintwork, the weathering, decals and Gentleman Jim, of course.

What rules could be used to game with a Victoriana submarine? I note that the Warlords adapted some of their own rules back in 2006. Are these available now?

As aye,

D'Ewell

Very cool indeed!

Another thing you could do with these, it seems to me, is flip them upside-down and make them the hull for an airship. Or even (possibly, you'd have to check the fit) take two, and join them along the flat waterline for a symmetrical (dorsal/ventral) airship.

Oh, the things we can think…

cybrt5421 Jan 2011 5:34 p.m. PST

I converted the Orca into an Aeronef using parts from the Atlantis sub by Disney and a part from a Parroom Station Aeronef. Worked very well. link

cybrt54

Very good. I like your colour scheme. What colour(s) did you use?

cybrt5422 Jan 2011 5:45 a.m. PST

Thanks! I hate to say this but it's been so long ago since I painted this (6+) years I don't remember what colors I used. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

CHANTYAM22 Jan 2011 7:42 a.m. PST

JWOMACK94-i was thinking the same thing the two subs together could make either airship or somthing that flies the Ather.Cybrt54 great stuff I have those bits the Orca /Atlantis sub and the Parroom Satition hull that I must have had for about 7 years

Very, very good. Thanks for sharing.

I can see this SF sea-world developing into something beautiful.

Cheers,

What company produces a comprehensive list of fittings (rails, chains, etc) suitable for use in the additional construction/personalisation of these submersibles?

Thanks in advance

John Treadaway23 Nov 2011 4:41 p.m. PST

Captain

when we did the Sky Galleons stuff salute.co.uk/cloudships.htm (which was done at pretty much the same time as the ship painted by Kevin Dallimore mentioned in the original post) we sourced naval components from a number of places, as I recall. Lift wood panels and floors were fitted from Wills Plastic Card. Railings were from EMA. Fittings, guns and crew come from by Lyzard Grin, Foundry, Copplestone and others.

I think I bought the railings around that ship (which I donated to Kevin to finish the project) from a Naval Boat specialist but I'm not sure the place exists anymore (it was a shop rather than a web store) but someone must still sell the stuff!

I hope that helps!

Come back if there's anything else you can think of.

Captain dEwell23 Nov 2011 5:15 p.m. PST

Thanks John T. I'm closing in on my own version of your Dallimore masterpiece, just need those all important bits of furniture. One more question, please. How is your submersible mounted? Has a water/sea effect been created underneath the model, and if so, how has it been done.

Kind regards,

D'Ewell

The thing looks like it makes a great Aeronef (had to look that up).

Very Victorian-ish.
