I have just bought two packs of Army Painter Tufts and will try them this weekend.

I usually base using the following method for 28mm.

1. Base the figure on either a plastic slottabases or a Litko plywood base.
2. Blend the figure base into the ground level with a small amount of epoxy putty (Milliput).
3. Undercoat and paint
4. After painting the figure, paint the base brown.
5. Sometimes glue on a few small rocks with superglue (cyanacrylate).
6. Cover the base with PVA and dip in course sand.
7. Once dry, cover the sand with a dilute mix of PVA glue and water and brown ink. This adds shade to the sand and also ensures it is firmly fixed.
8. Once fully dry (at least 24 hours), dry brush the sand with bone colour.
9. Paint the larger rocks mid grey and drybrush light grey.
10. Add static grass. I use Noch Grass Glue (= slow setting PVA) and apply the grass with a sieve.

I want to add tufts to some of the bases.
Would you do this before or after the static grass?
How do you glue them down? PVA or superglue?

Any tips will be appreciated.

Regards
Mick

Add the tufts after static grass, especially if you are using tacky glue. If using PVA or CA then before or after, it doesnt make much difference so long as the glue has dried before moving on to the next step.

I have just bought two packs of Army Painter Tufts and will try them this weekend.

Simply FYI: 'Army Painter' tufts are re-badged Silflor/MiniNatur tufts with the price doubled.

As such if you like the tufts may I suggest buying the Silflor/MiniNatur originals as they represent far better value and are identical in all other aspects (them being the same thing after all!)

Thanks everybody,

Dear Antenocitis
Thanks for the explanation. I had a look at your website and found the full size Silflor sheets. However, I cannot find shipping rates to Switzerland.

I always place the tufts after the static grass; I use a small dab of superglue (cyanacrylate) on the tuft back and then place it carefully on the base.
Hope this helps.

I would also suggest that if you are using superglue to attach grass or tufts, to use an accelerator on the tuft after it is affixed or you might get frosting on the grass when it dries. I have had that happen sometimes when I affix grass or things like that on a base.

I paint the base either brown or yuk yellow. Then I apply PVA to the entire base. Tuft is the first thing that goes on because I can later brush out any ballast, sand, leaf litter or other stuff. Everything else follows in short order.

Go to the cart, enter your country and click the button "give me a quote" and it will give you a postage estimate of whatever is in your cart.

Quick update

I ordered from Antenocitis Workshop and the tufts arrived within a week (UK to Switzerland).

The big packs from Silflor/MiniNaturwork work out at a sheet size of 30cm x 22 cm = 660 cm2
The Army Painter packs are 4.5cm x 15cm = 68 cm2

When you work out the costs per cm2, the small packs from Army Painter are indeed double.

Crikey – that gets complicated real fast. What would work for lazy ones like me would be a direct link to tufts, and then a bundle offer so I could just buy all four colours of any one size in one hit.

But nice products

Scenic Express has great prices and ll this stuff is available. I ordered a bunch last week and it arrived in record time with great email communication during the whole deal. Highly recommended!
