It was January 1944. Across the cold black sea 20 miles north of Keil a lonely HE111-H2 was droning sonerously home, the engine note rising and falling as the Heinkels pilot Gerard Knauff kept it at an altitude of 26,000 feet. picture The bomb aimer was scanning ahead of them and saw a strobe-like flashing high and ahead of them. "Achtung! Jager!" picture Knauff squinted. Out here it might be a roaming BF109. Or more sinister, a straggling Thunderbolt or Mustang from the hordes that were swarming over Germanys skies. It was indeed a Mustang, lost from its squadron. The pilot instantly recognised the spade type wings of the bomber below him and threw the throttle forwards. picture Knauff knew as the bogey dipped that it was his worst fear. "ACHTUNG MUSTANG!" he cried and Uli and Franz on the waist guns snapped awake and scrambled to their positions. Rudi in the dorsal gun racked a round into the breach and Schuler in the ventral position strapped on his parachute. The Mustang bored in in a fast shallow dive, its speed rising to 520mph. The machines were now closing at nearly 700MPH picture Leveling out, the P51 pilot rudder-tapped and his machine slwed round for a Leading shot. At point blank range he fired at the huge machine filling his gunsight. picture Evry gun hit and the 111 was riddled like a sieve. The Bomb aimer hammered at the flashing Mustang to no avail. Holes appeared all over the fuslarge and Uli on the Starbord waist gun went flailing backwards , his chest blown open by the impact of the fifties. The Mustang Streaked past, and leveled out.Franz and Rudi rattled long crisscrossing bursts after it, but to no effect. The Mustang seemed too fast. picture Knauff banked the Heinkel hard to the right and put it in a dive. He had to build up enough speed to escape over the coast. Behind them the Mustang hacked round in a wicked turn to the left. Franz, Rudi and Schuler called out the changing position. Schulers heart leaped and he wasnt sure it was just the Heinkels sickening dive. Grabbing his rosary he muttered under his breath. picture Knauff pulled back and leveled out his dive. The Mustangs powerful engine soon had made back up the speed lost in the turn. Six Fifties chattered again and red incoming and green outgoing tracers lashed the skies around the Heinkel. Rudi cried out in exaltation as he saw the P51 stagger under his burst. Bullets ripped into a cable gearing and momentaily snapped the P51 out of level flight. The Pilot felt the joystick shudder and flap as the Mustang became unstable. But the Mustangs bursts struck home. The Heinkel was now a flying wreck. Two .5 bullets struck Rudi's position and he screamed clutching his leg. picture Knauff pulled back on the yoke again and soared the Heinkel up like a fighter. Well, a very slow heavy fighter. Franz swung his MG down and Schuler saw the Mustang come into veiw as it rose abouve the Mustang. Blasting long bursts at the American who always seemed to be just a bit out of reach, the Germans gritted their teeth for the onslaught. picture The Mustangs wings lit up in a blaze of fire. Franz was blown backwards as a round ripped his gun from its mounting. The Heinkel groaned and suddenly the tail section spun away in a nightmare of twisted shreiking steel. picture The Bomb Aimer ripped at his Hatch and dropped straight through. Franz leaped out of the missing tail, Rudi scramled out of his seat in the Dorsal position and jumped. Schuler desperatly tried to leap from his hatch, but his parachute was snagged on a strip of twisted steel. The Heinkel spun to the sea and Schuler again tried to freehimself. It wasnt to be. The 111 smashed into the icy black waters with Schuler still trapped in his ventral tray. The survivors drifted down on their parachutes hoping that the Arados would find them in time
