Rest in peace, soldier. Thanks for your stalwart service to your country. Freedom was bought with the blood of many. Your efforts helped to preserve it for us.

Tom Bryant09 Jan 2011 8:28 p.m. PST

The man personified "hero" even if he didn't think so. What Major Winters and his buddies in Easy Co., the 101st, and all of the Allied forces did in WWII was nothing short of miraculous. We are forever in their debt. God Bless and KEep you and your buddies Major Winters. May we be worthy of it all.

He heard the trumpet call to rally troops & he answered it. We'll miss him, but his legacy lives on.

galvinm10 Jan 2011 2:48 a.m. PST

Maj. Winters did not think he was a hero, he felt he served in a company of heroes.

In my book, he is, was, and always will be a HERO.

Rest easy with comrades, old soldier.

The Owl10 Jan 2011 3:08 a.m. PST

A great loss but thank goodness his story and that of his men was preserved for history. They truely were the greatest generation.

I so wanted to meet him as he lived nearby, but I didn't want to invade his privacy. I just wanted to thank him.
Hopefully he will know somehow.

RIP

Historicalgamer10 Jan 2011 6:53 a.m. PST

I was just informed that he actually passed away Jan 2, but did not want the information released until after his burial as he did not want the publicity.

How true to form.

vojvoda10 Jan 2011 7:18 a.m. PST

Sad to hear. He was one of a dying off group of heros. Few are left in around from WWII. May he rest in peace.

I'll see you at the final manifest call. St. Michael will be our jumpmaster.

The word hero gets bandied around quite a lot these days. Winters was the real deal.

A modest man and true hero, not trumpeting his deeds, but those of his "brothers". May we all learn from his example.

Airborne! RIP.

Joe Legan10 Jan 2011 3:28 p.m. PST

I met him at a mall in Hersey several years ago. I recognized him and went up to him with my son. I said "Son, here is a true american hero." A real nice man and his wife was nice too.
We shared some war stories ( his were much better than mine)and he sent me some audio tapes and pictures.
RIP

Joe

spacehulker10 Jan 2011 4:30 p.m. PST

Rest in Peace Sir.

I have a great DVD of him, a truly humble man. Sad that their Generation is passing, we still owe them a lot.

Tom Bryant11 Jan 2011 12:22 a.m. PST

"Sad that their Generation is passing, we still owe them a lot."

I believe we will be owning that generation for a millennium or more. The years they lived through are as impressive as the last years of the Roman Empire.

Ironwolf12 Jan 2011 1:30 p.m. PST

I hope he is now able to visit with his friends that have gone before him. Rest in Peace!
