I am just getting into "Dystopian Wars" and as Steampunk is a new area for me I was wondering if anyone could help me with Steampunk and Victorian SF novels to help "get me in the mood". Tim |

The Affinity Bridge by Geo Mann, airships and zombies. Airborn by Ken Oppel, just airships. Larklight by Philip Reeve a silly but enjoyable book about space travel and an invasion of giant spiders. Starcross by P Reeve alien top hats taking over the universe. The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray by Chris Wooding a great Victorian/Lovecraftian horror story. The Death Collector by Justin Richards, a clockwork Jurassic Park. The Barnaby Grimes series by Paul Stewert, the supernatural adventures on a delivery boy in London. |

"The Difference Engine" by Gibson and Sterling. The author of "Bonecrusher" has a new novel out with the same setting, just starting in the eastern part of the US. It's title is "Dreadnought." You learn more about the seemingly never ending war between the states as well as meet up with up again certain drug whose use gradually converts people into of zombies. Also a few familiar characters from "Bonecrusher" show up at the end of the novel. |

There have been a few Steampunk anthologies in stores lately, one is called "Steampunk'd", the others have some variation of Steampunk in their title. Of the others, one is original-era fiction, the other modern interpretations. There's also the Pax Britannia series by a couple of authors, Johnathan Green and Al G-something. I've also seen a novel called "The Clockwork Man", but didn't pick it up, seems like a Frankenstein variation, but I could be wrong. |

You should definitely look for "The Peshawar Lancers" by SM Stirling. Michael Moorcock has a few good ones to look at as well, in particular "the Warlord of the Air" from the Nomad of Time series. |

Check out Scott Westerfield's Levithan link I really enjoyed Levithan and am very interested in reading the next book. I really love the idea of Darwianian beasts against the Kiaser's steam machines. The very first VSF Game to novel crossover will be Between Spears and Steam set in the Africa conquest timeline of WTNW. Here's an excerpt. link |

I am currently reading the second book in Scott Westerfield's Leviathan trilogy and also highly recommend them. Another series of books are by Stephen Hunt. link The first I read was The Kingdom Beyond the Waves and really enjoyed it. If it's not steam punk I don't know what is and the rest look to be as good. |

I know I shall be chastised, but I consider the three Space 1889 Mars series of audio books, taken together, to be a VSF Game to novel crossover. Not that necessarily qualifies as SteamPunk, but I'm still not entirely clear as to the difference. *shrug* Doug |

Though they ahve already been mentioned, they are worth repeating: Leviathan and its sequel, Behemoth. Both by Scott Westerfeld. Peshawar Lancers, by S.M. Sterling Both excellent. Igniateff, the villain in Peshawar Lancers, has my vote for one of the most evil book villains ever. He eats babies. Shudder
Also, the classic HG Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs novels are quite helpful reads. Land Leviathans, the John Carter of Mars books, First men on the Moon, Verne's 20,000 Leagues
logn list of good stuff there. |
