Don't forget that the Saudis hate Iran – and support an Israeli or American strike on them. The Saudis are very independent. They aren't really friends with us – but they are allies. And they are at odds with lots of their neighbors. The religious zealots are a force there – but they don't run the country. |
Timbo W | 03 Jan 2011 2:12 p.m. PST |
Yeah not good on general non-proliferation terms, the Saudis apparently financed much of the Pakistani nuclear programme, and are known to have Pakistani and/or Chinese missiles in silos. Reasonably cunning plan to have the warheads kept in Pakistan. First it gives them deniability – 'nukes? us? certainly not!' but also worries anyone that might have designs against them. I should think that the Saudis are more concerned about Iran than Israel. In effect the Saudis are in the position of European countries in the Cold War, that 'borrowed' nuclear weapons from the USA. Should the Iranians try some nuclear blackmail in future against Saudi, then this becomes a rather different scenario. If Iran wants to try and destroy Saudi capabilities, then they have to take on Pakistan as well – rather a daunting idea! The weak point is that the Pakistanis control the weapons, so would need to agree. Pakistan is not the most politically stable country in the world, but that's another question. |
sector51 | 03 Jan 2011 2:42 p.m. PST |
Yep only having nukes makes you safe in todays world. |
ghostdog | 03 Jan 2011 4:02 p.m. PST |
i think that there is very extrange that they donīt have their nukes available
they need to bring them to their country first, a very weak situation, as you just need to shoot down a transport airplane to destroy their nuclear force? |
Martin From Canada | 03 Jan 2011 4:30 p.m. PST |
they need to bring them to their country first, a very weak situation, as you just need to shoot down a transport airplane to destroy their nuclear force? If I were planning it, I would use a very elaborate shell game
The article did say that there were 2 planes on standby. But what if they are a decoy, and the real bombs are Fedxed to SA. They say that they can ship 'anything' ;) |

"Nuclear on demand"

Rent a rocket geo-politics
nice now we have to bribe Pakistan to forego providing service access to such weapons.Mayhap North Korea will see this and jump on the band wagon too. |
John the OFM | 03 Jan 2011 8:26 p.m. PST |
I think we should make this a Poll Suggestion, with the results being binding on the Saudis. Seriously, I would rather the Saudis had nukes than the Norks. Compared to North Korea, the Saudis are a model of conservative restraint. ALLEGEDLY, the Saudis have been egging on Israel and the US to take out Iran's nukes. Plainly, we have not, and since most nations can be counted on to act in what they perceive are their own self interests, I am not a bit surprised. I am only surprised that it took so long. Saudi Arabia was probably bankrolling the Pakistani nuclear development anyway. |

The IDF better not mess with our oil supply, unless they are the ones who are going to give us oil for the same amount or less!!! Otherwise, they are going to have to worry about an entirely different source of incoming warheads. Dan |
