I have seen on Amazon UK that Histoire & collections are bringing out a book on the battle of Ocana 1809.
It is due to be published on 15th February 2011.
I hpoe they have a better translator this time!
( I will still buy it though! )

Hi Paul

That sounds great. Their books are usually a visual delight and well worth collecting. I'll certainly keep my eye out for it.

Just checked and sadly, it is not showing on the UK Amazon site, as yet. I do hope it becomes available there, although I have no problems with ordering from their American site. But it is really great that a French vs Spanish action is being published and I'm really surprised that Osprey haven't produced any. I've written a few up and some of them were really close fought actions and equally as interesting and exciting as any of the other actions and armies the French fought against. But the Spanish troops have had a fairly bad press and French victories against them have often been considered as won easy, so hopefully, publications like this might address both the skill of the French in winning and also the fighting abilities of the Spanish soldiers, who could be equal to anyone on their day. I'm really looking forward to it.

Senarmont was the French artillery commander there. He led his artillery in an economy of force mission while the main attack took place elsewhere. While not as spectacular as his performance at Friedland, the artillery's mission was just as important and went a long way in achieving victory for the French.

Well in all honesty, what would Osprey have to offer? Lots of filler material on the armies different tactics, weapons, scant information on commanders, plenty of black and white photos and some questionable 3D maps. With that said, this book looks like something that will be added to my collection.

Dear vive lempereur

I think the Osprey titles are okay, for what they are. Perhaps people expect too much from them. The problem may be that they often include more than one battle, and in so doing lose space that could have been used for just one action. But yes, in my opinion, it will certainly be a welcome title, depending of course what the end result turns out to be. But most of H & C books are good, and certainly a visual feast, so I'm hoping for the same here, and even more in the future.

Just noticed it is now showing on Amazon UK. Just a pain to have to wait until February to obtain a copy.

Juhel is a good author – so it should be an interesting book.

Gazzola,

Yes, a welcome addition. A while back I was doing some intense research on the battle of Salamanca, using multiple sources, I found the Osprey of no practical use except for the deployment diagrams. The Osprey book had more material on the preliminary action then the battle. If someone wasn't doing any intense research, then sure, it's probably good for general information. I suspect however, the majority of their customers are wargamers and historians and they know much more than the book's author presumes.

Is this book physically available in any bookshops in Britain at the moment?

Sadly, I've not seen it available anywhere else in the UK. I made a comment about PH's new Osprey title being advertised 9 months in advance on Amazon, and I just hope it is not the same situation with the Ocana book, even though it was supposed to have been available on the 15th February. We all want new titles, but perhaps publishers and sellers should actually wait until the book is definitely available before tempting us?

The french version not published yet, and usually the titles published by H&C appear on their website first sending a message to their customers…

Sadly, this book is now delayed until some time in the future according to amazon.

Gazzola04 Apr 2011 7:58 a.m. PST

Sadly, still no sign of Ocana. And just when you think a new title covering something new and different is about to appear – it doesn't. However, let's hope it does appear in the not too distant future.

H&C's Berezina and Ocaņa delayed titles appear on amazon for mid-january 2012…
