How suitable is OO for 15mm or is it really only good for 20mm?

Grumpygamer27 Dec 2010 6:00 a.m. PST

Couldnt say Im afraid, Im using HO for my 15mm and it looks about right.

OO and HO are very close (1/76 for OO, 1/87 for HO). Both should work fine for 15mm.

Having said that, unless it's skirmish, I prefer to use smaller buildings, 10mm for or evn 6mm with 15mm figures.

A lot depends on on what you mean by 15mm and 20mm.

As Magard says HO is 1/87, so a 15mm figure at 1/87 would equate to a person only 1.3m. However, many 15mm figures aren't 15mm and and many work OK (height wise) with HO (but gaming figures often look bulky in comparison).

OO is nominally 1/76, which along with 1/72 many people use with 20mm figures, but again many 20mm figures aren't 20mm and many 15mm figures are now closer to 20 than to 15.

If you pick carefully you can use both scales with 15mm (there is 15% difference between the two), but you might get some very odd looking visual clashes between buildings of different scales so unless you can see the product in the flesh it might be best to stick with one or the other.

Thanks for the advice. I'm waiting for my Rebel Minis zombie pack to arrive and was thinking about acquiring terrain first, but perhaps I'd better wait to see the figures.

It really depends on how picky you are…

1/87 (what we used to call 20mm or 3/4" scale) should be fine for use with most 15mm figures (for sure with 18mm figures, since most 18mm figures are really close to 1/87, even if a little on the bulky side)

I use 1/87 scale with my 15mm figures. I use 1/72 (1/76) with my 1/87.

I find with buildings I can go either larger or smaller and it doesn't make too much difference. I do find that if I'm using singly based figures I prefer buildings to be larger and for multiple based figures I prefer building to be smaller.

It really comes down to personal preference – if you like the the look then it isn't wrong (no matter what anyone else says). I you don't like the look, well then of course it isn't right for you.

1/87 works well with 15's. Most model railroad building's footprints are much smaller than is typical in real life, so the buildings don't take up as much space on the layout. And since figures are poised atop big stumpy bases, the door heights of 1/87 look much better with them than a smaller door would.

IMHO Use:

HO scale for 15mm.

OO scale for 20mm.

O scale for 28mm.
