Does anybody know of a manufacturer of clear plastic bases? The kind that you will be able to see the grass under the model?

For 28mm figs would be helpful…

Thanks!

Try Litko. They make everything.

You can try custom ordering from Litko, but they will be expensive compared to wood, or other materials. You can also cut your own out of CD cases, which can be purchased at stores like Wal-Mart, in the USA. Use razor knife blades, changing them often, as they will dull quickly. Make several passes, with moderate pressure, to cut partially through the plastic, then snap them along the cut lines.

Whatever source you find, or choose, try hitting the clear bases with a matte clear coat: when you plop the figures down onto a surface, the base will virtually disappear. If you leave the bases shiny, they will reflect light, and they will be very noticeable on the tabletop. I would also suggest painting the figure's molded base black: it will look similar to a shadow, and it will not detract from whatever surface the figure is sitting on top of. Cheers!

I tried making clear bases for my 15mm ACW stuff ages ago. I bought some sort of clear plastic at a locl hobby shop and cut it to the sizes I needed. Only problem I had was that it discolored when I sprayed it with clear matt.

Litko do them (I use them for 1/300th aircraft).

I have tried to use them in the past for figures, but the "join" between the figure and the base has always not looked good. The only way I could get them look right was to snip off the base the figure came on and then pin from the underside of the clear base into the feet/legs of the figure. This was so time consuming I quickly gave up.

As Tom implies you need to do the painting AND varnishing before you attach the figure to the base.

Fenris Games make them. Here's a link to the item on their eBay store: auction

Not sure who actually manufactures the ones Gamezone uses, but the need to remain fairly smooth and scratch-free (to remain transparent) strikes me as the long-term killer.

This comes up fairly often. It's one of those ideas that sounds good in theory, but doesn't really work in practice.

Good luck, though, and let us know if it works for you!

I was going to pop in and say that I've never seen it look good.
Ugly where Mr. Figure meets Mr. Base, and either shiny and more eye catching than an ordinary base, or matte and not transparent enough.

(The same goes for flight stands, actually. A thin stiff, dark, wire is less visible than a rod of shiny plastic.)

All in my humble opinion, of course.

Folks – I would argue that they CAN look cool. Check out these pics over at Lead Adventure: link
