In the true spirit of Full Thrust, I assembled two fleets using various ship miniatures from Firestorm Armada, AeroTech, Silent Death and Starfleet Battles.

I think the overall effect is pretty OK when everything's painted appropriately…I was worried the Silent Death fighters would look waaay too huge, even though I'm using them as Full Thrust corvettes and frigates. As it is, I think I found the right visual scale for these fleets, at least viewed from three feet away on the tabletop.

Great looking setup!

Looks awesome! How long did the game take and how many units were involved?

We played 2 games in about 3.5 hours. They were both 1000-point games, which is the minimum suggested in the rulebook for a tournament game (not that I'm crazy about tournament play).

So, we averaged about 8 ships per side, with only one or two big cruisers per faction. With the smaller ships, we didn't bother leaving them on the table after they'd had their weaponry and defense systems shot off…we just took 'em off in the interests of speeding up play. In a campaign situation, of course, we'd leave them on the table and play out the retreat and/or salvage efforts.

Ironically, many of the Silent Death mini's are being used as starships in SFB.

Not kidding.

Who makes the day-glo green ships in the bottom left of the last pic?

They look very nice!

Very nice pics. Love the paint schemes on the minis.

Don't worry about using the Silent Death minis. I've used both those and certain Aerotech minis as starships when playing FASA Starship Combat Simulator games. Obviously, a Silent Death Salamander model's cockpit canopy, either old or new sculpt, becomes the bridge dome on a Klingon destroyer!

The saucer ship is from Starfleet Battles, and the two elongated green ships are from Firestorm Armada.

I must admit, when I first set about painting up this fleet, I decided that I was going to use a really bright, almost inappropriate color…hence the day-glo green, which is actually Privateer Press P3 Wurm Green. I didn't want to fall into the trap of using drab, classic navy colors. My sci-fi is bright, dammit!

The very different design ethics of the two lines would jar on the table, I think.

Thanks for the info.

just bought a bunch of aerotech minis on ebay and was a bit worried that they were going be too big next to my full thrust ships.
But have to say the mix of fleets you use look great!

Nice job. You've certainly caught the spirit of the game as Tuffley intended it there. Many SD fighters make fine small-to-medium starships – you just have to avoid making the cockpits look too much like cockpits when painting them. :)

I think a lot of the problem is the naval nomenclature that Full Thrust uses. The Silent Death ships look a lot more appropriate when I call them "strikeboats" and "gunships" rather than "corvettes" and "frigates."

I'm also not using fighters, so thankfully the Silent Death ships will be spared the ridiculous comparisons between FT's six-per-base fighter stands. :)

Thanks, everyone, for the comments. My friend just won a pile of Cold Navy ships at an auction, so … the Full Thrust game group continues to grow.

You would think so, but SFB Module Y2 uses SD mini's for a faction called the ISC. Looks….odd.

Farstar14 Nov 2010 8:48 p.m. PST

That does sound odd. Which SD models did they use for the early ISC?

Battle Works Studios14 Nov 2010 8:54 p.m. PST

Farstar, you can see which on the ICE store:

Well done with these. Great painting and a nice set up. You're making it harder and harder for me to resist getting into Spaceship gaming.

Very nice! Since like yours truly you've no shame to your game when it comes to mixin' and matchin' starship minis, allow me to point you at a classic Old School line of starship minis with some very useful ships for Full Thrust:

There's everything from small ships suitable for "strikeboats" and such, up to larger merchant vessels, alien warships, and more that can serve as larger hulls quite nicely.evil grin

On the off topic topic of SD in SFB, I also noticed some 'early years' ships were at least drawn in Captain's Logs similar to SD ships.

I will say some SD figs just won't work for me, some take a bit of 'adjusting', and some seem fine as is.

The cockpit thing is probably more an issue than 'wings' as I can imagine various reasons for disperse structures, from external hardpoints to fuel transfer pylons.

Some cockpits seem to stay that way no matter how you paint; some magically become equipment covers, others normal conformal blisters.

Finally, some fleets are too homogeneous in design; I need some variety to give a feeling of expected purpose built ships, with a good paint scheme to tie them together.

The table shown here does it very well. Wish I could have been there!
