For me it is Great War, although ACW Ironclads come a close second.

I would consider starship combat to count for this poll as it is mostly based on wet navy in space. Starfighters and naval aircraft gamed on their own are more properly aero-space combat, although they do count if used with ships.

Great War for me with Pre-dreadnought a close second.

Skeptic11 Nov 2010 3:14 p.m. PST

For me, it would be the age of sail, except that broadsides, short weapon ranges, and small scales can make for fiddly manoeuvring when hexes are not involved.

The Monstrous Jake11 Nov 2010 3:16 p.m. PST

Pre-Dread. Engagement range was generally less than 4000 yards, usually 2000 yards or less, which means an entire engagement can fit onto a table without using a very large surface scale.

No aircraft to confuse the issue.

Interesting (if not particularly successful) experimentations with ship designs.

Personal logo Virtualscratchbuilder Supporting Member of TMP Fezian11 Nov 2010 3:16 p.m. PST

Roughly galley through mid 1960's.

Predread, Armada and Napoleonic would be top 3 though.

Dn Jackson Supporting Member of TMP11 Nov 2010 3:29 p.m. PST

ACW – little tiny ships, great big ironclads, torpedos, rams, what's not to like?

scotskane11 Nov 2010 3:30 p.m. PST

WW I, pre-Dreadnought and skyship versions of the same

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP11 Nov 2010 4:15 p.m. PST

As for scotskane, before the dreaded airplane and submarine.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP11 Nov 2010 4:39 p.m. PST

Starship, WWII, Predread, Naps, WWI, Ancients and Acw pretty much in that order.

Stern Rake Studio11 Nov 2010 4:57 p.m. PST

In order:
Age-of-Sail, Starship, WWI, Ancients, Ironclads, Predread then WWII.

Ted

AGamer11 Nov 2010 5:09 p.m. PST

WWII, Ironclads, Modern.

Jeff of SaxeBearstein11 Nov 2010 5:31 p.m. PST

Pre-Dreadnought action . . . particularly RJW and "what if".

Lion in the Stars11 Nov 2010 5:32 p.m. PST

Frigate actions in the age of sail, or 1890s-early 1942. Before aircraft carriers became the name of the game.

Personal logo T Callahan Supporting Member of TMP11 Nov 2010 5:38 p.m. PST

In order of preference:
Napoleonic
WWII Deep Water
WWII Coastal
American Civil War
All others

The Beast Rampant11 Nov 2010 6:06 p.m. PST

ACW & predreads(I go back and forth on #1 & 2). Then Age of Sail and 'proper' dreadnoughts.

War at sea was more fun when the armored warship was king, before air support and (effective) submarines started mucking things up.

Allen5711 Nov 2010 6:11 p.m. PST

Predread and galley. Night actions in early pacific WWII are interesting also.

John the OFM11 Nov 2010 6:29 p.m. PST

If there is anything I would love to game, it would be Ironbottom Sound.

SgtPain11 Nov 2010 6:41 p.m. PST

Age of Sail and ACW

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP11 Nov 2010 6:47 p.m. PST

Well, the only ships I own are WWII – mostly cruisers, destroyers and battlewagons with a few carriers – and a couple of ACW ironclads

That being said, I think the naval period I would most like to game would be Age of Sail

hmer2011 Nov 2010 7:11 p.m. PST

The Great War, AWI/Napoleonic, Star Fleet Battles

Regrebnelle11 Nov 2010 7:21 p.m. PST

Napoleonic Sail, WWII, WWI

Sundance11 Nov 2010 8:08 p.m. PST

Hm, ancient galleys, WWI, WWII, Modern, ACW ironclads…Not necessarily in any order.

21eRegt11 Nov 2010 9:17 p.m. PST

WWI
Sailing ships
WWII
ACW
Pre-dreadnaughts

Though all are pretty close.

platypus01au12 Nov 2010 3:01 a.m. PST

Age of Sail
Pre-dred

That's it.

John

Pontius12 Nov 2010 4:18 a.m. PST

WWII – especially when played as a mini-campaign
WWI
Napoleonic

Waterloo12 Nov 2010 6:11 a.m. PST

WWII – Especially the Guadalcanal battles, surface and carrier.
WWI – Have the complete German battle fleet, working on finishing the English.
Pre-Dreadnought – currently working on the Russian and Japanese fleets.
Napoleonic – Ends up being the poor sister.

Khusrau12 Nov 2010 6:44 a.m. PST

highlandcatfrog12 Nov 2010 11:56 a.m. PST

Napoleonic, then WW II, then ancient.

fleabeard13 Nov 2010 5:49 a.m. PST

Ironclad/transitional period
Predreadnought
Age of Sail
WW1 (Black Sea, Med/Adriatic)

More or less in that order, though it varies as my enthusiasm waxes and wanes.

lanternsonlevee613 Nov 2010 9:38 a.m. PST

Napoleonic
Coastal WWII
Great War

There isn't a period I don't like…but the Age of Sail/Napoleonic are my favorite.

Early and coastal WWII
Submarine warfare
Carrier warfare
Age of Sail

Bertie14 Nov 2010 8:25 a.m. PST

Obviously there is no great fortune to be made selling modern naval rules!
Cheers,
Bertie

Mal Wright Fezian14 Nov 2010 5:19 p.m. PST

I'd have to opt for WW2 naval with WW1 a close second. But I also enjoy Age of Sail and Ancients.

hindsTMP Supporting Member of TMP15 Nov 2010 4:54 p.m. PST

In order of preference:
WWII
WWI
Napoleonic single ship
Modern (probably Falklands)

For the last 2 I've got rules and models, but have never gotten around to gaming with them…

vojvoda17 Nov 2010 10:49 a.m. PST

Ancients! Ecnomus all the way, I have Xystons, and many other scales for this era. So many ships and scales, I have almost everything made but Roman Seas which I hope to be able to afford after the holidays.

Those would be followed close by Ironclads although the number of battles are limited historically but the Thoroughbredmodels.com models are by far the best on the market bar none.

A close third would be Age of Sail covering Spanish Armada to AWI and Napoleonics.

GeorgethePug19 Nov 2010 1:16 p.m. PST

I guess being I have 350 Langton Napoleonic ships … I would have too say that period.
WW1 and Ancients are going to be a next project

laptot20 Nov 2010 10:25 p.m. PST

European ironclads in 1:1000 which I make

John the Greater23 Nov 2010 11:26 a.m. PST

Ironclads up to WW I. However, I have been in some great Christians vs Turks in the Med. games.

WaltOHara27 Nov 2010 10:31 a.m. PST

I bounce back and forth between Pre-Dreadnoughts, ACW, The Great War, and Fantasy. Pretty much Ironclads to WWI or maybe even Plane Orange/Interwar, with some fantasy thrown in.
