From this list? Moltke the Elder Before 1870, what makes you German? If Charlemagne gets on the list, why not Prince Eugene? |

why not Prince Eugene? why not. Add to the list, I just named a few for starters. |

Eugene was born and raised in France, although a Savoyard by ancestry. If our parameters for "German commander" include anyone who commanded an army largely composed of German speaking troops, you'll have some Swedes, Scots, Czechs, Italians, Hungarians, Netherlanders, Danes and possibly Frenchmen in the list. |

Here we go again -- no criteria. How about Fredrick Barbarosa -- will return in Germany's hour of greatest need and crush their enemies. Sounds like a winner to me. |

an army largely composed of German speaking troops Which is the fundamental problem with defining German before 1870. Would an Austrian commanding Hungarian-speaking troops in Imperial service qualify as German? Why not? Skorzeny was an Austrian, as far as that goes. If you called Blucher a German, he would probably say he was a Prussian; Call Frederick the Great a German and he would probably hit you – and curse you out in French. |

Ok, post 1870. Does that work better than simply Germanic? |
