I just posted 32 NAC marines that I have painted in a martian camouflage. Any criticism, critique, or comments are appreciated.

What im really interested in is some help on my varnishing. As I mention in my blog post, I used Future Floor Wax as my gloss coat, and Winsor and Newton Galleria Matt Varnish as my matt coat (2 thin coats). I waited 24 hours between each coat.

Now, all I have is a shiny mess. Im not SO concerned about it with Sci Fi figures, but I just havent been able to get the process down. Any clues as to what Im doing wrong?

I've yet to see a gloss that can't be dulled with Testors Dullcoat. Might take two passes, or even three, but I've "flattened" shinier figs than yours with the stuff in the past. Works better than any brush-on matte varnish IMO.

The 'Army Painter' spray matt varnish is without exception the best shine-killer I've ever found. (so much so that you have to be very, very sparing with it.)

That stuff could matt out the sun.

(edited to add): nice blog, BTW. See what you mean about the finish… it's hard to make out the definition for the shine.

So, if I were to go down either route you guys mentioned, am I done with these figures since I have already put the matte down? Or can I spray either of these products on top of what I already have?

EDIT – and, you dont think my technique is wrong (like, using Future) – its just a crappy matte product?

Norman D Landings28 Oct 2010 6:26 a.m. PST

I've certainly used matt spray on top of brush varnish before (when my humbrol brush-on solidified in the pot!) without any problem.

Obviously, I'd take one guy, and try a very light spray before doing them all.

If you don't mind waiting a day or two, do a 'throwaway' figure using the same technique, and see how he turns out, before tackling your platoon.

Thanks for the advice – Im on TheWarStore site right now. Im gonna try both!!!

Never had a problem spraying Testors over anything, actually. But try a test fig first to be safe.

I use a straight Future coat before a wash of Future/paint. Then I spray with Dulcote. Takes the shine off. Never had a problem.

Just give the Future 24 hours to dry before you dullcoat it.

Nice figs!

Good to see some martian style figures and terrain. My only suggestion would be to dull down the white dots with a light or medium grey. They are just too bright (large) in my opinion.

Keep up the good work!

THANK YOU for this advice. I happened across my LHS last night, and picked up the Army Painter (didnt have testors), and it worked PERFECTLY. You dont have any idea how much stress this was causing (relative, of course!) You have changed the way I finish models…
