Well, imho the work that is making Mr. GAry Dombrowski from Pennsylvania is the way to follow.

I truly love Howard Pyle's pirate renderings. His characters exhibited life even if his historical references were somewhat askew.

I think Disney borrowed a lot from Pyle when creating the characters of the original POTC ride at DL.

If they don't look like Pyle painted them, they have no business being Pyrates. grin
One must have standards!

There is an old series of postcards of "pirates" …or mostly local privateers, sold in the coastal town of St-Malo (Brittany, France), drawn by a (20th century) local artist I think.

This is one of them
picture

A bit old-fashioned, it is supposed to be a portrait of a local privateer who name was "Borgnefesse"… (in French, "borgne" means one-eyed and "fesse" is buttock, so the story is that this guy lost some of his back parts because of a cannonball…

Never knew if it is a true story or not, but the name is still quite popular in this town (also the name of an old restaurant, etc).

Time to get on with the pirating!

Dan: Father! We thought you were dead.
Yellowbeard: Us Yellowbeards are never more dangerous than when we're dead. How are you gettin' on pirating?
Dan: Um, well…
Yellowbeard: How many men have you killed so far?
Dan: One. Two, I think.
Yellowbeard: You think? You'll never kill anyone if you go around thinkin'.
