My 4-th 15mm sculpt! This is floating alien brain monster wich is loosely based on Octabrain from Duke Nukem 3D ( picture ) but design is completely different. This is geneticaly engeneered flying creature wich can mind-control a swarm of mindless monster solders to win a war for its masters (like platoon or squad commander)

I spend many hours detailing his brain , so I hope you like it. This is 4 parts model. 1 head and 3 tentacles. In final casted and assembled version it should have 7 tentacles (3 at each side and 1 at back)

I've attached several photos of this monster. Sorry for photo quality, I have cheap camera

Monster head next to 15mm Laserburn range adventurer from 15mm.co.uk. Head is 9mm tall and 10mm long.

My poor attemt to assemble monster with blu tack ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-Tack ). Unfortunately blu tank hde all bottom details
Also I used photoshop to copy legs from left side to give you an idea how this monster should look like in final version. I have 3 versions of tentacles, and the idea was to cast 2 versions of each of tentacles +1 for back of monster (it have 7 tentacles)

picture
On this picture you can see ruler, head and 3 versions of tentacles. I added a names to tentacles (wich is front, middle or rear)

bottom side of monster head. Seven tentacles should be glued to 7 holes

looks good to me. promising start. I have collected a few figures for a 15mm evil brains from outerspace army-(so far these are Lone Gunman 'cacodemons' and a 28mm Reaper 'brain horror') I want to add Black Hat cephalopods, and now your floating tentacled brain looks like a cool addition.

SirFjodin09 Oct 2010 6:22 a.m. PST

Black Hat cephalopods are amazing! I want them to :)
Any pics of Lone Gunman 'cacodemons'?

WarrenB09 Oct 2010 6:45 a.m. PST

Very good brain detail, especially for something 10mm long. :) The photoshop pic looks like it'll be great fully assembled, too.

Where will they be available from?

Has anybody see those BRAINS from SHAPEWAYS prototyping???

link

Check out the three different sizes, eye options, tentacles, claws and MORE!!!!!

I've gotten some of all of them…except the claw brains option (as they're NEW) and the WALKER…

Also Black Cat Bases has a slew of BRAINS in different sizes in metal and resin????? (I've got some of those too!)

Slish….

The cacodemon is near the bottom right of this page:

Makes me think of 'Terror from the Deep', the follow up to XCOM UFO Defence, nice! Hmmmm…..

I was looking at your pictures and a thought hit me, just roll with it, the bottom of your "brain" is far more interesting than the top, IMO.

picture

The two eyed big brain squid is fun, but the bottom has real alien character.

Put an eyeball in each of those sockets and you have an interesting alien.

But the top is well sculpted and is fun, just not nearly as interesting as the bottom in potential :)

Good luck with your project.

Cacique Caribe09 Oct 2010 11:26 a.m. PST

YES!!! Please make it with 3, 4, or even 6 eyes! That way it really becomes alien.

Firstly thanx to all for reply!
This is my 4-th sculpt 15mm (5th if count 6mm martians), so I hope I can make better minis after I get some practice. I know that monster is not perfect, but I am still learnig.

Qestion: Where will they be available from?

Answer: For now, nowhere :( But I wish someone could manufacture it.

These brains are great!

Here is link of X-Com2 aliens. Maybe I should try to use them as inspiration for my next sculpt. (I need practice more and more. I really want to make mini for other gamers to play)

What is that Laserburn figure based on? The sloping sides look like a 28mm base…

SirFjodin09 Oct 2010 6:11 p.m. PST

15mm.co.uk/LBA5.htm
20mm bases. Bag of 80 will cost 3,5 ponds – very cheap and great. They have same height as 28mm bases :) I am using them for all my figures and 28mm bases dor cavalry/bikes/monsters :)

My favorite Sci Fi brain movie was "Fiend without a Face." It was a masterpiece of cinematography.

link fiend without a face, fun.

jpattern210 Oct 2010 9:19 a.m. PST

Fiend Without a Face is definitely worth a rental, if you've never seen it.

Would make a great double-bill with Island of Terror: imdb.com/title/tt0060548 (Don't bother looking for it on Netflix, it hasn't been released on DVD yet.)

SirFjodin11 Oct 2010 7:15 p.m. PST

Good news. Its sold to 15mm.co.uk!

Hello SirFjodin,

Congrats! Indeed they are now on their way to us at 15mm.co.uk to be part of the coming soon SHM range for aspiring sculptors.

Anyone interested should email me on sales@15mm.co.uk and ask for info when its out.

SHM Simple Harmonic Motion…In physics, simple harmonic motion (SHM) is the motion of a simple harmonic oscillator, a periodic motion that is neither driven nor damped. A body in simple harmonic motion experiences a single force which is given by Hooke's law; that is, the force is directly proportional to the displacement x and points in the opposite direction.

The motion is periodic: the body oscillates about an equilibrium position in a sinusoidal pattern. Each oscillation is identical, and thus the period, frequency, and amplitude of the motion are constant. If the equilibrium position is taken to be zero, the displacement x of the body at any time t is given by

x(t) = A\cos\left(2\pi\!f t+\phi\right),

where A is the amplitude, f is the frequency, and φ is the phase.

The frequency of the motion is determined by the intrinsic properties of the system (often the mass of the body and a force constant), while the amplitude and phase are determined by the initial conditions (displacement and velocity) of the system. The kinetic and potential energies of the system are also determined by these properties and conditions.
Simple harmonic motion. In this moving graph, the vertical axis represents the coordinate of the particle (x in the equation), and the horizontal axis represents time (t).

Simple harmonic motion can serve as a mathematical model of a variety of motions, such as the oscillation of a spring. Other phenomena can be approximated by simple harmonic motion, including the motion of a pendulum and molecular vibration.

Simple harmonic motion provides the basis of the characterization of more complicated motions through the techniques of Fourier analysis.
