You were warned…this Saturday night on Sci-fi/SyFy is the premier of SHARKTOPUS…the collaboration between Roger Corman and his daughter?

Oi!

be afraid…be very, very afraid!

cloudcaptain24 Sep 2010 9:12 a.m. PST

I am holding out for Sharktocalypse Now! If its not currently being filmed then someone better get on it.

Personal logo McKinstry Supporting Member of TMP Fezian24 Sep 2010 9:45 a.m. PST

I just threw up in my mouth, a little bit.

Nick Weitnauer24 Sep 2010 10:32 a.m. PST

I am more interested in Josh Gates hosting the movie, then the flick itself. That guy is funny on his monster hunting show.

Sargonarhes24 Sep 2010 10:46 a.m. PST

I knew you guys would be waiting for that thing. And I thought that Piranha movie looked so bad, Syfy looks to be aiming to lower the bar even more.

Roger Corman and his daughter, why am I not surprised by this.

How do you sell a movie like this to a TV network exec any ways?

CmdrKiley24 Sep 2010 11:01 a.m. PST

"How do you sell a movie like this to a TV network exec any ways?"

I think it involves prostitutes and lots of lines of cocaine.

Striker24 Sep 2010 11:22 a.m. PST

Awesome!

Rassilon24 Sep 2010 12:00 p.m. PST

SCHWEET!

Nick Weitnauer24 Sep 2010 1:36 p.m. PST

I do believe it was the other way round. I thought I read that Syfy had copyrighted the title then shopped it around for someone to make something with it. Corman just happened to be the guy they went with.

This happens more often then you would think, expecially when it comes to shoestring budget b-flicks.

And Roger cried all the way to the Bank

Tom Reed24 Sep 2010 1:53 p.m. PST

I wonder what they are working on next…part clam, part Stingray….it's CLAMRAY!!!

Jeff at JTFM Enterprises24 Sep 2010 2:23 p.m. PST

I want to see them gene splice a shark, squid, pirhana, and a carrot and show the out come in 3D!

I wish they'd just go back to showing re-runs of the Invaders, The Immortal, Space 1999….

AWuuuu24 Sep 2010 3:00 p.m. PST

Hmm, last scene from trailer almost make it worthwile :P

Dances With Words Fezian24 Sep 2010 3:02 p.m. PST

but do you think they'll ever show 'Alien Tresspass'…(along the lines of 'Mars Attacks', if you were wondering….)…Noooooooooooo!!!!

How about a Roger Corman 'film-festival' for SyFy? If they're going to do 'sloock' at least make it an 'event' with guest-hosts talking about the 'best of the worst' and so on….

Slishfully,
Sgt DWW-btod

28mmMan24 Sep 2010 4:12 p.m. PST

I just threw up in McKinstry's mouth, a little bit :)

The last dozen or so have looked so bad that they had little to no redeeming qualities to them at all…but this one at least reminded me of something that I did like…the Sharktopus looks like a creature from Gamma World…and that is a good thing.

Seriously horrible effects but almost funny.

I'm sure it's on my "Must Not See" list … evil grin But yes, I like Gates on his show …

SheriffLee25 Sep 2010 5:11 a.m. PST

The only true Sci Fi on this SyFy Channel is on Tuesday.
Friday nights used to be Sci Fi night around here. And what prey tell noes Wrestling have to do with Sci Fi? Sci Fi and Wrestling is an oxymorgon. I hardly watch the SyFy Channeland Sharkopuss is not on my list. I am going to play Tmorrow's War.
I am a Science Fiction Fan from the '50s and the term nerd was not invented, yet.

Aapsych2025 Sep 2010 8:58 a.m. PST

And they said Gigli was bad …

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP25 Sep 2010 4:12 p.m. PST

Yeah … I agree … Wrestling does not belong on SyFy. I do like and liked some shows on SyFy … All the Stargates, Sanctuary, BSG, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Ghost Hunters, Destination Truth, etc. … but wrestling does not do it for me … I think SyFy is doing it for the $$$ …

Top Gun Ace25 Sep 2010 7:51 p.m. PST

I couldn't bring myself to watch it.

Jeff at JTFM Enterprises26 Sep 2010 4:11 a.m. PST

I watched about 5 minutes as self induced torture while channel surfing….. Settled on Johnny Depp in From Hell….

Sargonarhes26 Sep 2010 4:20 a.m. PST

Wrestling should not be on Syfy, not when I think it's also on TNT. I believe the Syfy channel is owned by NBC, which their ratings are in the tank. And how they are running the Syfy channel kind of shows why, who the hell did Jeff Zucker put in charge of Syfy? A Wrestling fan?

Saw some of it last night, and seen Eric Roberts career take another nose dive. He must be willing to do any role he can find now.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP26 Sep 2010 7:52 a.m. PST

It's always about the $$$ …

tberry740326 Sep 2010 8:12 a.m. PST

Henry Fonda once did a horrible film (what would now be a SyFy production) called "Tentacles".

When asked why an actor of his accomplishments would do such a film he basically said: I'm an actor. It's what I do.

Nick Weitnauer26 Sep 2010 8:24 a.m. PST

If you watched it, and it doesn't sound like many did, you would have seen that SyFy didn't take this serious at all. Josh Gates's hosting duties were straight from the old "USA Up All Night" bits. Good humor. The movie was bad of course and that was the point. They make these movies to be bad. No one takes them serious, so neither do they take themselves serious.
But they are just fine for a night of painting, with just passing attention paid to the screen.

Mardaddy26 Sep 2010 11:15 a.m. PST

Nick: So… "watch us make fun of ourselves," is their premise to maintain their audience?

By that logic, they've reduced themselves to, "JackBleeped text" but without the threat of actual bodily harm.

Top Gun Ace26 Sep 2010 11:40 a.m. PST

I agree, wrestling doesn't belong on SyFy, but neither does all that dreck they keep producing.

Surely, some of the old TV shows which were excellent by the way, would be much better choices, and can't cost that much to run on a station, e.g. UFO, Space 1999, The Invaders, The old BSG series, Blake's 7, etc.

I can't believe they can get any advertisers, given their poor lineup.

Nick Weitnauer26 Sep 2010 1:58 p.m. PST

Seeing as they turned on their original core audience anyways, I don't see that they have any logic at all.

Mardaddy26 Sep 2010 2:44 p.m. PST

There is that.

(Major Disaster)26 Sep 2010 5:24 p.m. PST

Sy-Fy is to science fiction as MTV is to music, and that's why both channels are garbage. Since NBC owns Sy-Fy, I'm surprised they haven't added a Law & Order spinoff- Law & Order: Alpha Centauri

28mmMan26 Sep 2010 5:39 p.m. PST

ooooo CSI Moon Base Alpha!

Nick Weitnauer26 Sep 2010 5:52 p.m. PST

Now I might watch that! :P

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP27 Sep 2010 7:04 a.m. PST

I think there are more cop shows on TV than anything else !!! huh?

chuck05 Fezian27 Sep 2010 12:30 p.m. PST

They ran many of those when the station first came on the air. Along with Doctor Who, Buck ROgers and the Incredible Hulk. I also seem to remember them running the old Planet of the Apes series. And whatever happened to their yearly anime festival? That was usually excellent. Those were a good couple of years…SIGH.

Farstar27 Sep 2010 1:16 p.m. PST

Space 1999 was decent as long as you didn't listen to the dialog too much…

Captain Gideon27 Sep 2010 1:48 p.m. PST

I remember once that Sci-Fi Channel showed Braveheart now I know that Braveheart was'nt historicly accurate, but it not Science Fiction by any means.

Captain Gideon

P.S. I remember the early years oif Sci-Fi when they had GOOD programs on almost any time of the day.

Pijlie27 Sep 2010 11:51 p.m. PST

Braveheart was defintely Alternative History Kiltpunk.

flicking wargamer28 Sep 2010 7:48 a.m. PST

BBC America has Dr. Who, plus Being Human and some other near Sci-Fi shows. Plus STNG.

Nick Weitnauer28 Sep 2010 11:38 a.m. PST

SyFy is trying to distance themselves from the Sci-Fi past… best way to do that is make these cheese movies and drive away the "old market" crowd. Once they are all gone they can continue to fill their line up with Wrestling, Game Shows, Reality TV, and a couple high priced licensed shows they can't afford to drop, yet (stargate, caprica, etc).

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP30 Sep 2010 7:52 a.m. PST

If SyFy drops the SG series, Eureka, etc. … it will lose a lot of viewers IMO … Their movies generally suck !! And IMO … SyFy should run STNG, DS-9, Voyager along with Enterprise at least once a week … if not daily …

kmfrye30 Sep 2010 8:33 a.m. PST

I think Nick W. above has nailed it.

I've often thought the best thing for SyFy is a serious competetitor, like Canada's "Space" channel, to challenge their market.

I'm not sure how one lobbies for a "foreign" channel to be picked up on US TV, though I imagine tacking it onto a NAFTA revision might do.

BTW, watched "Sharktopus" with my girl. Larfed our heads off, it was so bad. Almost thought I heard Eric Robert's sigh "Thank You" when the shark done him wrong.

Regards,
Keith F.
