By an odd coincidence, I just ran a game of the Doctor Who Miniature rules last night.

The Daleks roasted the Earth Force defenders.
Davros et cie wacked the Movellans.
And the Doctor was blown up with the space station.

Rather fun, that.

There's a writeup on my blog: link

The Doctor Who Miniature rules handle interaction between the Doctor and his adversaries pretty well – given time, the Doctor will probably develop a weapon to defeat them, so his opponents are best advised to maintain pressure on the Doctor's faction or suffer the consequences. There isn't a guaranteed win for the Doctor – it wouldn't be sporting, you know. :)

If I read it right the Humans had no chance at the point of self destruction? Sounds like a win, sacrifice is a human trait…and a Time Lord trait :)

kmfrye11 Sep 2010 7:26 p.m. PST

28mm Man – that's about right. I thought it was a fine, albeit decisive, choice.

One on the players felt their ought to have been a count down before destruction, but what's the point of a self-destruct switch if someone can turn it off?

Keith F.

Yep…the classic speech before you do something only works in media where the writer wants you to win…in a game setting, waiting to push the switch is the same as not pushing the switch.

My only thought is this…did the humans ever have a chance? Did they have weapons to make a difference or not so much? Was it always a matter of getting to the switch?

RPG might be fun, and I've wanted to do the various sides for
HotT.

I have also used Matakishi's rules for my Doctor Who games. I own about 25-30 Daleks and a similar number of Cybermen. They were facing some Men in Black. We had a fun time.

Thanks,

John

Surely you, John, recognize that this whole Dr Who thing has a world wide following and is the longest running science fiction series of all time…

So, what? I should care that I am in the minority?

28mmMan, you are writing as if I am missing out on something that is a solid feature of Western Civilization.

A friend recommended it to me PRECISELY because it was so cheap and cheesy. Hell of a recmendation.

OK, I did catch 2 minutes of something where some dude and a dudess were talking with Queen Victoria (God bless her!). It looked really dumb, and I asked my son what he was watching. "Doctor Who, I think." He had been watching it, and he thought it looked really dumb too.

You know… If there is anything that REALLY annoys me, it is someone saying "But you really have to respect…" Usually, it is the Waffen SS or Confederates, or something equally odious. No. I don't have to respect it.
I do not have to respect it, and I do not have to like it.
That is YOUR opinion, and I really resent you telling me what my opinion should be. I don't care how many people like it. I do not care if 95% of the people love it. I do not, and I see no reason why I should.

This thread title is "Does Dr. Who Wargaming Interest You?"
It does not. That is the answer that I gave.

I'd play it as an RPG. By sheer coincidence I happen to own
one of the old RPG rulebooks along with some seven printed adventures. I have miniatures of three Doctors(2nd,3rd
and 7th?)some companions,2 Daleks(one blown up-they weren't
always invincible),Cybermen and odds and sods monsters.*

*and anyone with a Cecil the sea sick sea serpent hand puppet has got a Loch Ness Monster miniature!!(Really bad special effect from an early Tom Baker story.)

"I own about 25-30 Daleks and a similar number of Cybermen. They were facing some Men in Black."

MiB offer some powerful weapons and equipment, that could be a fun game…leave room for a weirdo alien and Bob's your Uncle.

28mm Man:
"did the humans ever have a chance?"

Oh yes. In the second playtest they stopped the Daleks with massed fire. The Earth Fed crew also may align with the Doctor, as their victory conditions are similar.

>Did they have weapons to make a difference or not so much?

They have the same weapons as the Dalek Troopers. Daleks are just hard bazzas to kill.

>Was it always a matter of getting to the switch?

They start the scenario in possession of the self-destruct mechanism. And the main control room. Unfortunately, the control room is exactly between the two Dalek factions.

I thought the Loyalist Dalek player made a mistake in not clearing out the self-destruct chamber prior to his assault on the control room. He also had a string of rotten rolls (post-midnight Luck Drain) when he finally *did* decide to clear the chamber, but by then the device was primed.

Definately. Ive already got my modern UNIT figures done, the 1st 5 Doctors, Cybermen & Daleks, Sea Devils, scratch built Sontaran, & a variety of other alien & human baddies from a variety of clix games.

For those that have mentioned playing Doctor Who as an RPG, a company called Cubicle 7 has released a new game last year, & is re-issuing it in conjuntion with the new Matt Smith doctor & branding. It's got some very good reviews, especially in the ability to be accessable to new, non-RPG players. Cubicle 7 is also going to be releasing rules/scenario packs for each of the original 7/8 doctors.

I have played the DWMG several times and have almost always had very close games with dramatic endings.

Nick Bowler12 Sep 2010 4:38 a.m. PST

I think we are all missing a big clue -- John the OFM hasnt watched Dr Who -- maybe its because HE IS THE DOCTOR!!!

(I think he is the first Dr!)

Duc de Limbourg12 Sep 2010 5:38 a.m. PST

who??

Jimmy da Purple12 Sep 2010 7:39 a.m. PST

I wish someone would do some in 15mm. My Doctor is a Peter Pig (I think) old west charater in a duster. I made him a scarf and voila. I used FOW british painted in a grey uniform for unit, with some alien tyoe weapons. I have used them against the grey aliens from death rays of war, but would love 15mm cybermen.

Klebert L Hall12 Sep 2010 7:59 a.m. PST

Not really, though if someone set up a game I'd play.

I have the same problem with gaming DH that I do with gaming Tolkien – the setting is designed so that everything is overwhelmingly powerful, but still always loses to the McGuffin.

joekano12 Sep 2010 10:47 a.m. PST

You bet I'd game it

Scorpio12 Sep 2010 12:11 p.m. PST

I'm a fan, but oddly, don't have a real urge to game it. Never saw it as a particularly combat-oriented show.

erraticassassin12 Sep 2010 12:38 p.m. PST

Wow, this thread got me a mention on Dropship Horizon! *chuffed*

Although, 'e's gorn and put me name as Eric Assassin. :|

Howler12 Sep 2010 1:48 p.m. PST

Surprisingly, no

Thieses13 Sep 2010 7:01 a.m. PST

I have played and will play more in the future. I have most of the old Citadel Doctor Who miniatures including the plastic Daleks /Cyberman boxed set. When Harlequin released their massive line of miniatures I bought everything that I could find.

Norrins13 Sep 2010 8:37 a.m. PST

Game Dr Who quite frequently.

Use the 5150 rules and for the rpg element I use Larger than Life.

richarDISNEY13 Sep 2010 8:39 a.m. PST

Not in ANY format. Minis, rpg, cards, board, charades, etc…
beer

Rogue Zoat13 Sep 2010 1:05 p.m. PST

Crooked Dice's ruleset is very good and VERY fun!! My plans are to buy loads of the micro universe judoon figures and build up a platoon of judoon! So far I'm on 10 I think. :D

So yes, I do like the idea of a Doc Who game, although it's not really a wargame. I'd say more just a tabletop game. There's a bit more scop for narrative and plotting story devices than just two sides beating each other over the heads.

Oddball14 Sep 2010 4:45 a.m. PST

Yes. I've picked up some figures of the Doctor (Tenent and the new guy) and a few of his companions.

Now I need Cybermen and Darleks. I'll most likely work them into some of my zombie games and other pulp type games.
