I will be going to London next week, so I'd be very happy if someone with local knowledge could recommend one or two miniatures shops/bookshops specialising in military history worth visiting for the historical miniatures aficionado.

OK, to define "London" a bit: I am willing to travel 1.5 hours by public transport to get there (from Paddington, central London).

Cheers,
Jan

The military history section in Foyles (Tottenham Court Road) is well worth a visit- I always go if I'm in the capital. Motorbooks (St. Martin's Court) is also well worth visiting (even though the staff are infamously grumpy)- it's only a few minutes walk from Foyles.

Another recommendation for Foyles, good wide-ranging selection. Also for the odd second hand bargain try Quinto on Charing Cross Road, they regularly get new stock and have a good History / Military / Naval and Aviation sections.

Francis Edwards is literally just round the corner, though a little pricey and the last time I visited the military range was shrinking.
Henry Purdes (I think that is the name) has a good remainder section at the back.

Orcs nest is just up the road from Foyles at Cambridge Circus though it is mainly RPG and board games.
Also a handy hint is that Oxford street is 10 min walk from all these places so if the partner is in tow.

There are a lot of second-hand bookshops clustered around the British Museum. A good place to mooch about for awhile.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations. I'll definitely visit as many of these shops as "Oberkommando des Heeres" (my wife) will allow.

Walk up Charing Cross Road, and pay attention to the side streets.

I am trying to find a book that would help me to understand the service records of an NCO serving in the army in the second half of the 19th century.

Can anyone suggest a book and/or a shop?
