Thank you! Does anyone have any opionions on Curteys Samurai?

DeanMoto28 Jul 2010 8:43 p.m. PST

Curteys are nice, however, be aware they are a bit earlier than the Perry and Kingsford ones. The Curteys match TAG pretty well – they are both around 11th-13th Cent. Perrys and Kingsford are the around 16th Cent. Here are some Curteys painted link This link compares TAG, Kingsford, Curteys & 1st Corps – the last two are owned by same folks now.

Here's a list of manufacturers I compiled several years ago – some info/links may no longer be valid:

25/28mm Samurai Manufacturers (Unofficially Compiled as of Aug 07)

1st Corps Miniatures – 12th-13th C. according to their website –helmets are Nanbokucho period (1300's) with wide, flaring neck guards (shikoro). Also, 12th-14th C. Mongols and Koreans. Website – link

Agema Publications – I'm not familiar with this company, and couldn't find pictures of their figures. Website – agema.org.uk

Amazon Miniatures – No period noted, but generally later. Website – link

Assault Group, The – Gempei/Heian/Kamakura/Early Muromachi – approx. 11th-early 14th C. Also, Mongols, Song, and Sui Dynasty Chinese. Website – link

Black Hat Miniatures – Mostly ninja, ronin, and unarmored samurai. Website link This TMP post has a link to actual pictures of the figures TMP link

Curteys Miniatures – They look to be early period, Heian-Kamakura as TAG. Also, Mongols, Tibetans, and Shang, Sung, Chin, and Han Chinese. Website – link

Dixon Miniatures – Two ranges – Early (Kamakura) 12th-14th C. and Later (Age of Wars) 16th-17th C. according to the website. They also have a range of "legendary" and related figures. Website – link

Thank you very much! I have to say Perry look the best in my opinion. What mixes well with perry?

DeanMoto28 Jul 2010 9:17 p.m. PST

As already mentioned, Kingsford definitely does – period and sculpting style – at least IMO. I'm not familiar with the others – although a gaming buddy does have some OG. I think some of the Ashigaru could possibly be mixed in with some of the other two – maybe. Dean

ok, will go for a perry/kingsford mixture thanks :)

The "Kingford" are easier to paint, not as many under cuts as the "Perry" miniatures. Their both great ranges with the "Kingford" being a wee bit bigger!

Implicit in Dean's post is the notion there is a world of difference in "samurai" depending on the period you wish to game/model. The later sams, exemplified by the "Age of Wars" figures in the Perry/Kingford mix, are IMHO more uniform and probably easier to paint than (e.g.) Heian (11th&12th C) period sams. I am interested in the Gempei War, which brought the Heian era to an end. A number of years ago I converted a pile of Ral Partha sams to the earlier period. Now we're fortunate to have more choices. The terrific colors and complexity in the silks of the o yoroi and clothing of the 11-12th C samurai are challenging to paint. The Age of War is characterized by uniform laquers over "bullet proof" armor, and the visually exciting clan mons on the sashimotos. But you do have great individual flair in the armors of the great daimyo.

I have the Entire Perry and kingbird lines and think they complement each other. For full disclosure, I sell the Kingsford line in the US.

Best,
Steve
