I haven't played the rules but they are well-thought of by people whom I respect.

I haven't played the rules but they are well-thought of by people whom I respect.

And, I'd wager that EC has not played them.

Michael Hopper14 Jul 2010 10:27 a.m. PST

EC wrote "To all Nappy hopefuls, I'd recommend Black Powder, Sharp Practice, Shako II, and Trafalgar for naval. Stay away from this and Foundry's 'Napoleon'"…

EC then continues in another post to say he just picked up Shako II, splitting the cost with his buddy.

I didn't understand how he could recommend a set of rules he just picked up, although in fairness I may have misunderstood his statements completely. I had the immediate impression he was trying to disguise his love of Black Powder, which as many pointed out was irrelevant to the thread congratulating Sam on his efforts and success.

I haven't played or read Black Powder so for all I know it is a superb system and I am cheating myself out of better gaming by not acquiring it.

I will say, as a fanatic when it comes to the Shako II rules, that I like Lasalle's rule book better, better produced, better laid out. I won't take anything away from the hundreds of Shako players who contributed to making Shako II a better product than Shako I but I personally think Sam's Lasalle rules are just better than Shako II. Dave Waxtel and Arty Conliffe will ostracize me for saying this after the hundreds of Shako scenarios. :( Will I quit playing Shako II = no, older I get the lazier I get for learning new rule systems. Old dogs don't want new tricks.

Simply put though, coming from one of the biggest Shako fans there is, Lasalle is just a better set of rules in a number of ways.

To each his own and EC, if you're reading this, I'm open minded. Contact me at log1cal.mh AT gmail.com and when you're willing to host a BP game at a future Historicon I'd gladly sign up and try it if I'm in attendance.

Best wishes Sam, keep on writing.

Michael

@ Michael Hopper:

Actually, I'm planning to Host a Black powder game (probably Peninsula or an early war 1792-98 game), a Sharp Practice Peninsula game, and a Trafalgar game at any one (or maybe all) of the next 3-4 conventions, including the next Historicon.

Yeas, I just picked up Shako II, but I'm confident I'll enjoy it, Mr. Hopper.

I should also clarify that I've never met Mr. Mustafa, am not related in anyway and have no affiliation with the Samuel Mustafa Foundation For Better Gaming.

OK, red flags are things like the following:

Cardiology
Chest pain like an elephant is sitting on your chest, sweating, shortness of breath in a gentleman around age 60ish who has a history of high blood pressure, bad cholesterol, and his dad died of a heart attack at age 49. Oh, it also looks like the EKG is showing ST elevation. Your cath was due 20 min ago.

Neurology
You wake up slurring your speech and unable to move the right half of your body.

GI
You have bright red blood per rectum.

Psychiatry
You just told your therapist you have been giving away your prized wargaming things and bought a hand gun last week. You've been feeling real down recently.

Wargaming
Your opponent has 3x 12 lb batteries, the Old Guard, and several cuirassiers. You have a 3 lb batt low on ammo backed up by 2 battalions of militia that just rallied from failing morale three turns ago.

Red flags are signs of bad juju or The Badness (aka the BIG C).

A rule set getting an award over one you favor is not a red flag. It is kinda similar to getting a really bad runny nose and watery eyes during spring time. Sure it is annoying as anything, but you grab some Claritin and life is ok.

Let us keep perspective. Congratulations are due to those that give of their time to advance the hobby. We don't have to like everything, but we don't have to play everything either. So grab some Claritin (your perfect rules) and get back to playing.

Congrats again Sam.

Sorry for the rant everyone, but red flags got me going.

Thanks EC! I'm 2,000+ miles west of the Pennsylvania-Maryland Triangle where gamers are known to disappear, sometimes to reappear days/months later. As such, the only eastern Con I've attended is Historicon on 3 separate occasions. I'll check my vacation plans as I plan to attend in either 2011 or 2012 and if so I am willing to register in a BP game of yours. Keep in touch.

Thanks,

Michael

Since when is Black Powder a Napoleonic ruleset, anyway? I'm planning on doing the Sudan and the AWI with it,and I have done War of 1812 with it(ok,fake Nappys).Yeah, you can do Napoleonics with it,but its like saying DBA is THE ruleset for gaming the Roman legions. LaSalle is a Napoleonic ruleset,so the whole damned comparison is apples vs.oranges,anyway.

Oldenbarnevelt14 Jul 2010 11:38 a.m. PST

Congratulation Sam. It certainly went to a deserving set of rules. Napoleonics is not my thing. However, I bought your rules for the quality of writing, the excellent design and the superb production. This is the epitome of a wargame rule set. My efforts at rule design will be judge against the standard you set.

Midpoint14 Jul 2010 1:48 p.m. PST

Congratulations Sam,

Specifically – thanks for incurring the opportunity costs* and taking the risks, some no doubt significant.

I hope I'd feel the same even if I didn't like the game, but I do.

Generally – I am glad to have pro-active people in my hobby, providing materials and opportunities for others – even if I choose not to prefer some options over others.

Two weeks ago I was almost in the embarassing position of awarding [or at least seeming to award] a prize to myself – with a cheque for £1,000.00 GBP attached! Fortunately votes at the end of the window removed me from top-spot.

Skinkmaster,

Since when is Black Powder a Napoleonic ruleset, anyway?

Actually, the title of the board refers to the 'best HISTORICAL miniatures rules'…So EC's opinion is entirely valid in comparing the two. And I for one have found them to give me the best Napoleonic games I've had for a while, and I've also directly compared the two, along with the Victrix supplied precursor to March of Eagles.

Kind Regards,

Sparker

An Apology -

Earlier in this thread I made a cynical comment about a British product getting nominated for a prize at Historicon.

I since gather from another thread that the Perry Bros, a Brit company, were nominated for, and won, a prize there…

So – I apologise for and withdraw my hasty and silly comment.

Kind Regards,

Sparker

Gratz Sam!

Old Contemptibles14 Jul 2010 9:47 p.m. PST

One of our club members who attended H-Con, had signed up for a Lasalle game. But according to him the game never took place with no explanation why. He was going to report back to us about the game. Anyone know why the game was called off?

Sane Max15 Jul 2010 5:13 a.m. PST

The People that were meant to be running the game had to go bribe some judges, assasinate Ted Kennedy and blow up the twin towers.

If Emperador Carlos turns out to REALLY be a BP sock, it will have sullied the reputation of a good game. If it transpires he was just making unsubstantiated accusations of Criminally Actionable Offences entirely off his own bat, then it will be a great relief to me.

VonBurge15 Jul 2010 6:12 a.m. PST

I seriously doubt Emperador Carlos is a "Black Powder Sock." What has been displayed here by him is so counter to the central philosophy of gaming stressed in Black Powder.

I own Black Powder as well as Lasalle. I loved reading Black Powder from cover to cover. An entirely pleasurable endeavor. I really appreciate the way Rick Priestly advocates a relaxed atmosphere of good sportsmanship and easy going approach to wargaming in Black Powder.

It appears from his post in this thread that perhaps Emperador Carlos missed this key aspect of Black Powder. His vitriolic disposition towards Lasalle and his bitterness over Lasalle's recent HMGS award seems very ungentlemanly and counter the spirit of Black Powder. I'm pretty sure Rick P would happily congratulate Sam M. It's curious to see Emperador Carlos push so hard in the opposite direction and largely to his own discredit.

I also own Might of Reason, Grand Armee and Lasalle, and I have sincerely appreciated the style, the quality, and the good ideas you shared with your books. I can't wait for Blucher to be out soon!

Bottom Dollar15 Jul 2010 9:46 a.m. PST

Well, Terrement, that's probably because the majority unchecked, and most definitely the perceived majority, usually appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Apologies for the interuption and I don't think the above is in anyway a reflection of HMGS voting procedures.

PS And Terrement, that WAS a good laugh. Thanks !
PSS "How ya doin" is a more engaging and in some ways respectful way for American's to say "Hello". Connotes, you're a person b/c not only did I greet you, but I also asked you a question. Duh !

Well, IMHO, the word "corruption" should have more evidence than zero behind it before it gets deployed.

That YouTube link was hillarious ! :)

The People that were meant to be running the game had to go bribe some judges, assasinate Ted Kennedy and blow up the twin towers.

What? I was just asking a simple question. Why are some people on TMP so sensitive about these rules? I like the rules fine and I am happy for Sam but why do the pitchforks and torches come out almost every time someone on has a question or makes a critical comment about these rules?

Streitax15 Jul 2010 11:50 a.m. PST

To quote the famous Charlie Brown, 'Good Grief.'

Bottom Dollar15 Jul 2010 12:22 p.m. PST

Apologies for belaboring the point, but words are important--as the Brits should well know-- and that was Charlie Schulz, not Charlie Brown !

Congratulations, Sam. To win amongst a group of wargmers is an acheivement worthy of recognistion.

I have neither purchased nor played the rules. Nor do I have plan to do either based upon the reviews I have read. Having found a rule set that suits my style of play I no longer feel the need to go out and add more dead trees to my bookshelves just because they are a popular set of rules.

That said what I can not understand is the vitriol that this set of rules seems to engender here.

Gentle reader, be gratious in either victory or defeat.

Whatisitgood4atwork16 Jul 2010 4:39 a.m. PST

Congratulations Sam, for winning the award and for creating a darn good set of rules.

Congratulations to Sam on winning the award. Also, congratulations to EC for winning the "Bleeped textehole of the year" award.

Now who's insulting who?

Is it possible to end this thread before it really gets out of control,or am i too late to say that?

There will be a Mel Gibson primer for those not yet up to date on TMP etiquette.

Gideon, describing him as that is hardly an insult; based on his performance here it is a statement of fact.

Congrats, Sam!

Now, back to work on Blucher (all that silly academic research can get put on hold for a while, there's important gaming to be done)!

And at some point, I'm really going to have to brave the East Coast and get in a game or three with you, to be followed (or possibly preceded) by a trip to the pub!

Lord Ashram18 Jul 2010 4:52 p.m. PST

Why not both?

Lion in the Stars18 Jul 2010 8:19 p.m. PST

Mostly because I don't play well when even lightly inebriated…

However, Lord Ashram, I like how you think!

Consider yourself invited to at least one end of the party!

Theword18 Jul 2010 11:30 p.m. PST

I agree re Blucher..

Get to work!
