Hey Guys,

Here are some pics of my work in progress Late Roman army. First up is a foot general, figs are one GB, one BTD and one Foundry.

Next up, an archer element. These are all BTD.

I've also got some pics of an auxilia unit and some hunnic horse archers which i'll post seperately.
Let me know what you think.

Superb intricate painting! I really like how each base is a like a diaroma.

Very nice – I like the intricate tunic patterns.

Beautiful painting. Very intricate work on the decorations, your eyesight is better than mine, and your hand steadier!

Cheers, Simon

Wow, that's fantastic. What an inspiration to stop chickening out and base my 28mm ancients for Impetus.

Thanks for the comments guys. I've resurrected my blog and posted up some background info and a few more pictures. It can be found at littletinmen.blogspot.com

The tunic designs are lovely, I've always wondered how best to do the round patches on uniforms of this period. I don't think I could do them as much justice as you have, though, so I would probably use smaller scale transfers, or maybe a basic paint job that matches the shield designs. I know my limitations! It will, of course, be years before I get round to it.

Well done – I've linked into your blog, hope you don't mind.

Cheers
Paul

No worries Paul, more links the merrier. With the patches etc, the method i used is to paint the tunic the base colour, then paint the base of the patch, usually dark blue or red-purple. I then use a windsor and Newton Srs 7 000 brush and very thinned GW skull white to paint on the details bit by bit. I find that getting the consistency right can be a bit of trial and error, but once that's right it gets exponentially easier. I've also had a bit of success with the optivisor, but i generally prefer to wreck my eyes instead.

I uase Windsor and Newton Series 7 as well, but usually in Size 0 and upwards. I also use a visor. Thinking about it, a combination of even smaller brush heads plus the visor would maybe do the trick.

Good luck with the studies, by the way!

Lovely work, Ben. Your general's base--mixing GB, BTD, and Foundry, reminds me of David Imrie's work several years ago, which mixed BTD and Foundry, and changed my mind a good deal concerning what were "compatible" figures.

On the other hand, your BTD archers make me weep. I have two packs of those to tackle, and they're bound to come out looking much more plain!

It really is a shame BTD is so badly managed, the figures they have in the ranges are superb. If they were halfway to being reliable I don't think they would ever be short of orders.

Those are lovely Ben, and a great choice of rules as well!

Thanks for the comments guys.
Allen: David Imrie actually provided a lot of the inspiration for my Late Romans. The Infantry base which i'll post up later today is very heavily inspired by his brilliant work.

I hope you've noticed that he too is veering towards Impetvs!

Indeed i have. Seeing a few of his Arthurian/Late Roman bases is in no small part what drew me to impetus in the first place! :)

Beautiful. Would you mind sharing what the flowering vegetation is? And did you dry brush the tufts? How do you go about that?

thanks

The flowers are Silfor mininatur flower strips. I got mine from Antenociti's workshop ( link )
