your image of a troll, after seeing the miniature you went with that instead because it is great. Now this is a fun one for me
I have always liked the idea of trolls
RPG
skirmish
and big battles
and of course in media (TV/movies/books) There are so many different visions, with many crossing the lines of troll-ogre-giant. Many trolls of myth and legend flow between these three titles with ease. And I would say that it is a matter of personal opinion as well as game system defining the look of a said troll. So for a basic filter, to move this thread along :) let use say that giants are right out
giants are humanoids that are basically really big men
the barrier between ogre and troll is far shorter IMO, so if there is an ogre miniature that says "troll" for you and your needs/gaming then include it :) There you go
no giants, but any other ogre/troll miniature that says "troll" for your vision
which miniature currently available is best? |

I don't really think that any modern troll miniatures do it for me like link I don't know the make but if any modern ones are close to that look they would get my vote. x42 |

First I would recommend many of the Reaper Mini Trolls. I have used them extensively in my D&D campaigns and they are very distinct from their Ogres and Giants. Many having the more traditional (from various European mythological backgrounds) look of very long arms, ape/gorilla like posture, long pointy or large bulbous noses, and the obligatory warty hide. Reaper does have a "Not" LotR Cave Troll, but that borders more on huge Ogre in my visions. I would also recommend a few of the Privateer Press trolls from their HORDES game, specifically the Dire Trolls of the Trollblood faction. There aren't very many "tradtional" trolls in this line though, since the Iron Kingdomstm mythos makes the Trolls a very sophisticated society. BUT
the Dire Trolls are particularly nice looking (even if they do look like VOR Growlers ). Andy Welkley "Your Phrendlee Hevy Phyzx T-chrr" |

I'd echo what Hevy Phyzx said. I really enjoy the reaper Trolls (the Mother troll with infant is a great touch). |

I don't have one favorite. It depends on what setting I'm playing in for me. That being said I really hate the WotC D&D CMG Trolls. They are just really goofy looking. I really like Paizo/Reaper's interpretation of the classic D&D troll. link Here's a color picture of the Troll on the cover of Paizo's Bestiary. link |

"LotR Cave Troll, but that borders more on huge Ogre in my visions" I am with you on that one, but huge ogre is good too! "Having been spoiled by D&D, I have to go with the classic MM1 look. Ral Partha's AD&D figs are long gone but Otherworld still has the look covered" I am a fan of Otherworlds work, the troll was always a bit of a withered old hag for me but Paul Muller's Gnolls on the same site are just magic and the paint job is great. As mentioned earlier, the PP Hordes Trollkin big guys have a savage "monster" troll look to be sure. If I were putting together a working unit, with weapons and intelligence (a quality not usually assigned to trolls :) I would use the Trollkin, which to be honest are GREAT ogres for me, but I could go either way link Love this Angus image, but it says more ogre (again a good thing) to me picture I guess I think of trolls as being a bit misshapen with long arms, gaunt look, and long fingers like these link picture and as much as I tend to the throwing rocks side of the fence, GW does have some good trolls IMO
or I should say they did, those classic early 90's trolls, can't seem to find them, but the new ones have a few good choices link link |

whew, that was a blast from the past, when miniatures were flat cast and tiny. This guy claims to have rights to reproduce classicminiatures.net those were interesting, Heritage was nearly the only game in town, when I was 12-13yrs old :) |

@Triple D = I think Partha sold them for a short while as I recall that is where I got mine. I think it even says Partha on the base. It's been years and I'm too damn tired to look right now. |

in my memory I had made my troll clan as Ral Partha, and instead they're Citadel. They're sculpted by Tom Meier, for the most part, so the connection to Ral Partha is understandable. RP did sell them for a while, as that's where I got my few. |

Let's see
The Fantasy Tribes Trolls were probably the best on the market for, like, ever
The new LotR trolls are excellent if you liked the look of them in the movie (I wish they were just a tad smaller, as I think the minis exaggerate the size of the trolls a bit). The Mithril Trolls are fantastic, as is one that I have seen by Reaper that is similar to it(them). My true wish is to have them all
All trolls by anyone who ever put them out and all trolls that will ever be created
Hell, why stop there, I want every miniature ever created and that will ever be created
And, the state of Rhode Island in which to store them all. |

About half of my trolls have "Citadel" on the base, the other half are blank. But I honestly cannot remember this long after if Ral Partha sold them or not. Evidence says "not". Except that Farstar agrees with you. A couple of my trolls are old Dragon Tooth, and there is one "oldy boldy" papa troll, bald, huge (a true giant among trolls), with his gut flowing over the shaft of his stone-headed, two-handed club: truly gross to behold: I think he's a Citadel too, but obviously a different sculptor's creation than the smaller Citadel offerings in the link provided by Doc X. My clan is about 15 figures all told, iirc. I had them entirely on the table ONCE – in a scenario involving clearing out a pestilential troll enclave. Oh, and each of my trolls has a name written on the bottom of the base

OK, Well, there is my new absolute favorite troll. I am hoping he eventually does some with a bit more armor or oclothing on them and some other weapons (so I don't have to), to use for the armies of Mordor
I SO wish that we could take up a collection to get Tom working solely on his fantasy lines for the next year. Of course, we would probably need to raise about 100 grand in order to make that a reality. I'd be willing to chip in 1/20 of that. |

As much as I'm loathe to admit it, I've always had a soft spot for GW's river trolls as they have a geniune bestial monster look instead of a typical "tall ugly, and OAP-esque, dude" look about them. |

My favorite Trolls in order: Mithril has about 14 different trolls in their line, I have several of each. Next Reaper Ogers, I use them as Trolls. The GW LOTR trolls I have most of them. The new Tom Meier troll at thunderbolt mountain is very nice. I hope he does some armored variants. |

The new one from Brother Vinni has risen to the top of my list. Those from Otherworld are nice too (I grew up with D&D and all those minis very faithfully follow the illustrations from the old Monster Manual) |

Trolls in my mind should have a nose, not like the LotR movie versions, who look more like apes. btw I have the same gripe about most orc depictions. Someone decided that they should be flat nosed and every body just followed suit. A big old nose (pointy or bulbous) make them look that much nastier and scarier. Monsters should have projections coming out of their bodies and that definately includes noses. I have taken to sculpting pointy noses on my GW LotR goblins too. A bit fiddly but now they look like scary monsters and not just armored monkeys ! BTW I also love those early Citadel trolls and some of the newer ones ( like Tom Meyers')as long as the features are not too exaggerated. Too much exaggeration creates unbelievable absurdity and cartoonishness . I guess that's my Troll-Orc-Goblin criteria : almost human scary and not too cartoonish
Saurons corrupted or failed attempts at humanoids
