While working on a miniature I am at the point where I am stuck with what to do with the base/underside. Normally a miniature is slot-a-base or molded footprint (base), but mine is a ground hugger like this picture so do I sculpt an underside and make it harder to cast or put it on a base and fill any voids for the casting ease? I like the idea of being able to put it on what ever base the gamer would like to, but that said does it matter? Better to have a complete miniature just because or mold in the base. If a base, the shape becomes important. Working on a 15mm and a 28mm version, if that helps. |

I would try both, and then produce the easiest. Also, why do you have to sculpt an underside?????????????? Once based, it won't be seen anyway(i.e.micro armor)! |

No base so long as the critter is fairly big. It is easy to add one, if that is what you want, but almost impossible to remove one you don't want. I have not bought models in the past because of the built in bases. (Small critters can have a base if they are otherwise too small to hold easily. Say a Star Wars mouse droid. Such bases should be as thin as easily achieveable.) |

It's always bottoms with you Americans, isn't it? |

No, some of us like "tops" too. Gracias, Glenn |

The desire to sculpt the bottom is in the nature of "finishing" the piece. More so I was thinking a minimal close cropped flat bottom or a molded base. I am leaning towards minimal bottom. |

I'd suggest a base as thin as reasonably castable or a non-base (filled-in void). Why shred molds unless you absolutely have to? |

That is the voice of reason that has been knocking about in my head :) |

For what it's worth, I like the underside of a mini to be sculpted too. That way I have the option of making a 'dead' version. |

I have been giving it some thought. In the case of a dead marker it may be better to covert an existing miniature and then mold a dead version. I would prefer to make a bottom but it makes more sense to provide a minimal flush to the body base at this point
easy to base as the gamer chooses, and if someone desired to fill in small details to make a dead version or other. Thanks for the input all! :) |
