Brings new meaning to the term "Killer Whale:"

Now let's see if Ahab could handle one of these beasties…evil grin

I believe Dan has deployed near the Hurricane area so may not be around.

Thanks,

John

Ahab would have had little problem with it, considering how much bigger modern bull sperm whales are.

The Linnean name is going to give the Creatinists absolute joy – They can point to this as the "Leviathan" that the Lord did battel with in the second creation story in Genesis.

Than again, there's few other latin binomials that do this thing justice.

Very cool! I have a weird fascination with prehistoric whales, and this just jumped to the top of my 'cool critters' list!

My fave is still the mighty basilosaurus!

Perhaps, but from the look of those teeth, I suspect this specimen would be rather more… *forward* in its advances than Moby ever was…evil grin

I am thinking a blend of t-rex + killer whale = Kogiidae terribilis or Ahab killer :)

28mmMan01 Jul 2010 6:16 p.m. PST

And yeah, CC is down South waiting to see what is what from the storm.

khurasanminiatures01 Jul 2010 7:16 p.m. PST

or Ahab killer

That would be Physeter macrocephalus, because Moby Dick, a sperm whale, killed Ahab just fine. grin

We don't have to look to the past for amazing whales -- we have them today. The sperm whale has the largest brain of any animal that ever lived, it makes the loudest sound of any animal alive today, and is the largest toothed animal alive today.

What's the bony protruberance on top of its head for?

I'd like to see a few of these around to remind Japanese "scientific" whalers why they shouldn't kill cetaceans.

"I'd like to see a few of these around to remind Japanese "scientific" whalers why they shouldn't kill cetaceans"

That and to deal with any self imposed terrorists who use violence to make their point against violence.

Terrorism is terrorism, regardless of the reason behind it.

As to the bony head part, another in a long line of interesting artistic renderings based on limited data. "hey we got a tooth" then tada!

Some of the creatures created from the aether are really cool.

I think a giant whale with huge teeth and a head horn would be crazy cool to see! Like the fire whale from Thundarr! (couldn't find a pic :(

PS
I am a big fan of whales and think they should not be killed…I would not kill people to prove how much I do not like killing…but I do like whales, alive :)

ochoin deach02 Jul 2010 3:42 p.m. PST

I have no great desire to kill Japanese whalers.

They make lousy eating for starters.

28mmMan02 Jul 2010 4:29 p.m. PST

Certainly the worst sushi ever! :)

Covert Walrus- Leviathan does not feature in the 2nd Genesis creation narrative. He pops up in Job & various prophetic writings. If I remember rightly Yahweh battles a monster called Rahab in one passage though this was just refer to God judging the 'crocodile', Egypt, rather than a marduk/Tiamat myth variant.

this Mutha is way Kewl

In spite of all the superlatives whales have amazingly small male members and facial hair so feeble even a Frenchman would be embarrassed
