Between the book and the OVAs, I've put together some rough-guess stats for the Fairy Air Force's major planes. These are seriously scary birds, even compared to an F22 or Su37. FFR-31MR/D Super Sylph. Min: 5 Max: 42 Pw: EP (one I made up, 100klbs Max Ram thrust with a max takeoff weight of 83klbs is *nuts*!) Acc 1/2: +5/+5 Dec: -4 Ma: E Gun/Ammo: 7d6/12 Bomb Comp: +6 DP: 8 Cf: 8 Fl: 8 ECM: -3 Radar: 2+L Sz: +1 Sp: +1 Load: 35 Typical Missile Load: 4x AAM-III, SRAAM 4x AAM-V, MRAAM 6x AAM-VII, LRAAM I've got the others on paper, and am working on the JAM aircraft
they're a little tougher to stat up. |

Cool! What are you going to use for models? |
MacrossMartin | 26 Jun 2010 2:48 a.m. PST |
Bandai made a series of gashapon in 1/144th. Pretty sure I've seen then at Hobbylink Japan. |

Yep, I have three of them, and they are purty little thangs

1/600 scale is what I plan on gaming this in. 1/144 makes for a BIG model: a Super Sylph should be about 6" long in that scale. I may still try to chase down the 1/144 models for fun, though. I was planning on converting some Su27s for the Super Sylphs (like Yukikaze herself). I *think* a MiG29 is about the right size for the Sylphids (boxy cross between an F22 and F14). A Yak41 is a good start for the FAND-1. The FAND-2s are going to be annoying, probably completely scratchbuilt, as will be the JAM and Mave. At those speeds, I feel sorry for the earth fighters. I don't think an F22 could keep up with a Sylphid, let alone a Super Sylph. The Extreme Power rating will probably end up modifying the Break Turn and Immelman maneuvers by another point. Fortunately, only the Super Sylph and FAND2 will have that rating. Everyone else is merely high power. |

Ok, time for the line Sylphid. The Super Sylphs ended up being too complicated for serious mass production. Sylphids are a little more maneuverable, but not a fast in a straight line as a Super Sylph. Super Sylphs are primarily recon birds, while the Sylphids are the mainline twin-engine fighter. Today's bird is the FAND I. Largely an interceptor with occasional air superiority or ground-attack duties, the FAND I is to a Sylphid what an F16 is to an F15. 1/144 does not give 6" fighters, I have a grey Sylph collectable and it is 6" long, at 1/100 scale. Still 4" is going to need a huge amount of space. link I wouldn't bother looking at the kit models. They are incredibly expensive. |
Lion in the Stars | 30 Jun 2010 1:47 p.m. PST |
Yeah. I really wanted the 1/72 Super Sylph kit, until I saw the $100 USD price tag! I'll settle for the collectables in 1/100. 1/144 does not give 6" fighters, 22m / 144 is 15.27cm. That's the book length, not the one from the OVA. ===== And now the FAND-2. Deployed because the FAND-1 was simply not maneuverable enough to keep away from the new generation of JAM fighters, the FA-2 trades a little speed for better power-to-weight and maneuverability. It's only 60% the weight of a Supersylph, and has 60% the raw thrust. Built to dogfight. FA-2 FAND II Min: 5 Max: 22 Pw: EP Acc 1/2: +4/+3 Dec: -4 Ma: E Gun/Ammo: 8d6/6 Bm: +6 DP: 6 Cf: 8 Fl: 8 ECM: none Rdr: 2+L Sz: +0 Sp: +1 Load: 28 Typical Missile Load: 4x AAM-III 4x AAM-V |

Thanks for all this, Lion! Giving some serious thought to using the data you've put together for a scenario along the lines of 'Battle of Britain: 2040', using the Yukikaze machines for the RAF. Not sure what to use for the Luftwaffe just yet – would use VF-25 Messiahs, but I don't think I'll be able to get models from both shows in the same scale, unless I do this at 1/100th!! |

If you've got the garage empty, why not? |
