Hi, I'm looking for some WW2 fighter rules, using a hex mat, that I could easily convert to a sci-fi fighter game. So what rules would you guys say are the best WW2 fighter rules and why? Thanks, Duncan |

Bag the Hun if you must use WWII. I would highly recommend however that you use Air War C21 which are modern jet rules. They are easy to convert to SF and even contain a couple SF weapons. Others could be made from the games missile rules or taken from Full Thrust. There is a free short version of the game which can be downloaded from, IIRC, Wargames Vault. The full game has tons of stats for modern aircraft which could easily be used as the basis for your SF fighters. F104 stats could suddenly be those of a Rigellian woohoo fighter, etc. Any real world fighter game has one perhaps two aspects which do not fit with space fighters. Space fighters dont stall and possibly dont crash or disintegrate if they are moving too fast. Ignore or justify such happenings as you wish. Al |

bag the hun/bag the jedi..(BTJ is i the "scramble" supplement) its been done. havent seen a Full thrust WW2 fighter thingy(though the basic system has been used for everything from steampunk to galleys to car wars), though jon did an earlier SF fighter effort which is on the SFSFW website. |

Mention of C21 reminds me that there is an SF version all ready and waiting to go in the Wessex Games production plan :) |

"Mention of C21 reminds me that there is an SF version all ready and waiting to go in the Wessex Games production plan" David, havent seen much movement from Wessex. Any idea when their new stuff will see the light? :) bobblanchett, I was not referring to fighter rules as a Full Thrust thing. Just that their are lots of weapon types in the FT rules and on another site (name escapes me)that deals with FT which could be bolted on to fighters in another game. BTW Dijit89, why not try Silent Death? It is a fun game though it breaks down if you start putting ships larger than fighters into play. Another possibility would be to find one of the many boardgames about aerial combat and convert it to SF miniatures. |

i've tried Silent Death but got a little tired of all the bookkeeping necessary to keep the game running. I'll have a look at C21 and Bag the hun |

There are several good ones not mentioned above. They include: - Check your 6! has a lot of supporters, and gives a very good game. It is based on the successful Blue Max system.
- Blazing Skies is a freebie, and has a lot of interesting ideas. It is on the freewargames site, but does not use a hexgrid.
- You can always use the complex Fighting Wings system with miniatures. It has a fairly high learning curve.
Best of luck in your search! Cheers, Gregory

Bag That Hun + Jedi Supplement (Fat Lardies Xmas Annual 2008, $8 USD pdf ). BTH gets you an excellent WWII game, but I wouldn't say it is the best sci fi rules
Hunters in the Sky/Star Hunters share the same mechanism (also pdf download) as a WWII and sci fi game. The Star Hunters rules are free and stand-alone. The Wings of War series by Tumbling Dice are very simple and would adapt easily to sci fi. They are very cheap. |
