I'm in the process of building a 2ft x 2ft board for HotT, has anybody got any suggestions for other games (any period or genre) that can be played well in this space?

I've got SoBH and flying lead which I plan to use the board with.

And I realise that most any game can be shrunk to fit if you fiddle with ranges, movement, figure scale etc
I'm just looking for others experience of what works well in this limited space with out to many alterations.

Thanks!

Yes!

I HIGHLY recommend getting the Ambush Alley ruleset and starter box from Rebel Minis!

15mm minis (Very nice ones) and there is an actual starter box to get you going. Small unit warfare in the middle east! Great set of rules.

All the DBA games I have seen are played on a 2x2 board.

Rich Johnson specifically designed his .45 Adventure line of pulp gaming rules to be played on a 2x2 board, the size of the available space on his kitchen table IIRC.

In my experience from playing in a half dozen or so of Rich's games the concept works very well.

His rules and some figures to go with his various rules can be found here:

If you are interested in fantasy, I've got that too!

All FREE!

All the THW games as well.

Here's some freebies to look at that are made for 2x2.

2x2 Napoleonics, which can be found for free on the 2mm Yahoo forum. Of course, they were written for 2mm troops, but I have used them with 6mm troops on that size of a board.

Hordes of the Things. Gloire in 15mm.

Warhammer 40K skirmish missions – Kill Team.

I think all the Rat Trap games are on a 2' board.

Another vote for Rattrap's games. .45 Adventure is a lot of fun!

HarryHotspurEsquire's Irregular Wars is also played on 2x2 IIRC.

Mighty Armies

I made a mod for Ancient and Medieval Warfare that could be played on a 2X2.

Warrior Kings

Song of Blades games are played on 2X2 for 15mm skirmish goodness.

I second 2x2 Napoleonics. I also play with 6mm!

I just hope you win the first turn, because the game will be short! laugh

Strange Aeons is designed for a 2 x 3, but could easily be played on 2 x 2: strange-aeons.ca/sa/?page_id=3

I've been blogging for a couple of months specifically around testing fast play (< 1 hour) ancient rules that work on a 2'x2' board. Blog Link here:

link

I'm using Callinicum 531AD from the SOA battle day 2009 as the scenario to replay with the various rules. I've only played three so far – Armati (works OK), Warrior Kings (perfect), Justified Ancients (works fine, as it should as it is designed for fast play 2'x'2', just not my cup of tea). I'm doing about a ruleset every 3 weeks. The other rules on my current list (which supercedes the list on the blog) that should work as is or with minor tweaking are:

Fantasy Rules!
Irregular Miniatures Ancient Rules
Mighty Armies
Age of Might and Steel
Fast Play Ancient Warfare
Basic Impetus
Impetus
DBM100
Might of Arms
DBA
ABC
Arcane Warfare
Ancients D6
WAB
The Die is Cast
C&C: Ancients

I might not try them all out but I'm not bored yet so I'm going to give it my best shot.

The DBA Humberside Extension will allow you to do pretty much any conflict from biblical times to ACW on a 2' board. There are also DBA mods for later conflicts such as WW2 (not sure if they are any good though).

2x2 Napoleonics.

Pretty well anything grid based – Strategos, Square Bashing, Lincolns War, To the Last Gaiter Button, Playing Leapfrog, Memoir 44. Hurrah Stalino… the list is very long.

Crossfire.

Any game you can reduce the base sizes and ground scale sufficiently that it still isn't too fiddly to play. We did the whole of Borodino a couple of weeks ago on a 3' x 18" 'table', 6cm per half mile, division sized bases.

We did the paired battles of waterloo-Wavre using the 1997 edition of HFG at 1" = 600p on a table a couple of feet across.

Your imagination is the only limit.

Tusk if you like dino hunting or mammoth hunting.

Gloire if you like the Age of Kings, three musketeers, etc.

Red Ops 5 for zombie clearing from an apartment complex.

Bugs! if you like bughunts.

The land supplement for Hammerin' Iron gives simple grid based ACW rules.

Force on Force does moderns in 15mm in this space.

Field of Battle does black powder era 6mm.

John Bull/Patriots! is excellent for small unit battles from F&IW, AWI and 1812.

I have a 2x3 foot batttle board that sees heavy usage.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've download .45 Adventure and D6 Ancients. They both look good.
Definitely gonna get the sci-fi force on force when it comes out.
I'll be keeping an eye on Shaun's blog.
Cheers!

2'x2' would be half scale for Poor Bloody Infantry. The map is an 8x8 grid, so that would make for 3"x3" grid squares. That could work with 6mm or maybe 10mm figures.

I am currently making bulidings link and painting figures link to play "Ambush Alley" ambushalleygames.com and "Chain Reaction 3.0" link and "Nuts!" (albeit, North Africa instead of Europe) link

I was a Michaels craft store and found 12"x12" thin cork tiles in packs of four for about $10. USD These are faily common items in craft and stationary stores and are all priced about the same. Here's a picture of what they look like I fount at Overstock link but remember, I got them for the same price a Michaels and could have gotten them even cheaper had driven down the street to Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon.

Anyhow, the point is that they are perfectl 12" squares that look eough like the desert to pass. I think I'll paint the back side green for other games.

Personally I think that 2x2 and 2x3 gaming is a genre unto itself. I have a 4x6 game table, but I am totally stoked about using the 2x2 format for gaming. (I'm stoked about using the big table for the Warlord Romans I just got, but that's not for this thread.

2x2 or 2x3 gaming, whether it's Ambush Alley, one of the many Two Hour Wargames in 15mm, or DBA/HotT, is something that I can setup and play on my modestly sized (26"x44")coffee table. I like the idea of being able to do that.

Humm…perhaps that's what we can call games that can be played in such a small area…"Coffee Table Miniatures Games".

Here are couple of pictures taken with my iPhone of the North African village in progress on the cork tiles: link
