I genuinly like clunky tanks – anything that's basically a carden-lloyd carrier plus 1cm of armour plate and armed with a 2pounder I find, for want of a better word, "charming". By the time people work out where the engine should be, that the armour should be thick enough to stop a stray rifle round, and that the main gun should be able to at least scratch the enemy's tanks I find them a bit dull. So, what's your favourite ? Maybe pick top 3 or 5 if list gets long enough. A few suggestions : Char B1 Renault FT-17 Bob Semple tank. Matilda I Anything 1930's and japanese Anything 1930's and italian Don't like clunky tanks, give me Tigers. Not a wargamer |

This is why I am painting stuff for Poland 1939. Panzer Is vs TKS tankettes. And anything with two machine gun turrets. |

Only Borderline Clunky, as it was only rendered so by the enemy's tech advances, but I have always loved the BT series. Pat |

Should I have put real world, historical, really got built in the title of the thread ? Maybe I should've. :-) MkVIb is rather super. |

M3 medium tank – The General Lee. Why? Because every time someone mentions the old show "Dukes of Hazard" I see a M3 tank jumping a river while that stupid horn blows Dixie. Sick, yes I know. |

I've always liked the T-26. Is that still "clunky"? Certainly the A model fits the bill, with its separate MG turrets. I will cast a vote for the Churchill MkI, with the 2pdr in the turret and a 3" howitzer sticking out the front of the hull. The British equivalent of the M3 Lee. |

I agree – clunky tanks are so much cooler than Tigers, never understood the WWII power gaming thing. Who'd want a tiger when you could have a 2 man tankette with little armoured bubbles for the crew or a turret cluttered up with a rear mounted machine gun ? |

I have always loved the Matilda. Tried to get my wife to accept it asz a baby name, but she figured it out. She was not about to name a daughter after a tank. |

The A9 has to be up there. Little dinky MG turrets, near vertical turret sides and totally unreliable. |

What about the Panzer I chassis used to mount a 15 cm infantry gun? |

Should we allow SPGs ? Tricky. The german tank hunter based on the Bren Carrier is really nice. And the Crocodile Carrier also is suitably bizzare looking. |

No love for the Vickers Mk II or the Independent? My all-time favorite might be the T-26: slow, under armored, and inappropriately armed for an infantry tank. |

It's got to be the T28 or the T35 for me
lovely looking beasts, though I wouldn't want to be the crew for either of them! Colin thewulfweb.blogspot.com |

I add to the T28 dogpile but also cast a vote for the Churchhill tank (big and clanky – perhaps the Crocodile variant trailing its fuel tank!) |

T-35-when the crew bails you have a squad. All the two man tanks/tankettes should race at Monaco-now there's a game. Have random tank hunters with ATR's shooting at them. |
20thmaine | 08 Jun 2010 10:28 a.m. PST |
The St Charmond is a great lumbering disaster ! Love it. But the Whippet ? Compared to what else was around it has the air of a wonder weapon ! Although the FT-17 is cluncky it also survives until the end of WWII (and a little beyond ?), so it's successful. But cluncky none the less. |

Jamesonsafari | 08 Jun 2010 11:07 a.m. PST |
Lots of good ones mentioned. But I have a soft spot for the Vickers MkII Medium. Would've ruled the battlefield if WW2 had happened in 1925. Could we maybe pick a top 5? |
batesmotel34 | 08 Jun 2010 11:08 a.m. PST |
I'll also vote for the T35. It even qualifies under the two MG turrets rule ;-). Chris |

Cruiser Tanks A9, A10, A13, and Covenanter. Together they formed a major portion of the British tank forces during the first few years of WWII (well, aside from the Covenanter), but you still can't find any of them as injection molded plastic kits, aside from the fairly new and rather expensive A13 in 1/35 scale. Always wondered about that. Crusaders you can find in several scales from several manufacturers, but no cruiser tanks earlier than that. |

When I saw 'Clunky' I thought about these two straight away KV-2 and Churchill AVRE with it's Flying Dustbins. The Marder seems to be a bit 'tinny' still had a naughty ouchy gun for it's frame. From the list the Matilda I looks to fill the slot, just about. |

The Japanese Type 97 tankette. Armor that won't stop a bullet, a single lousy MG and small enough to fit on the rear deck of the Sherman. |
