Hi gents, I know that the IX° (Saxon) Corps of the Armée d'Allemagne undertook a reorganisation on the 10th of June 1809. As a result, the Musketeers regiments formed a single batallion (about 900 men) and the Schützen batallions were put to around 700 men. Officers and NCO in excess were sent back to Saxony. Brigades were also rearranged
Now, my question is : did the reorganisation affect the Grenadiers batallions ? I know that they were regrouped in a single brigade, but did the size of the batallions, in men, change ? All orders of battle I found so far either show the new (correct) organisation but no number of men or the old (erroneous) organisation with (likely erroneous) numbers. Can someone point me to the right numbers along with the correct organisation ?.. Especially for Grenadiers. Best regards. |

According to Nafziger ('Poles and Saxons of the Napoleonic Wars' pp152-153): "Two infantry divisions were organised. Each division had two brigades formed with two regiments. This meant a total of four battalions per brigade, or eight per division. The grenadier companies of each brigade were converged into one battalion that remained with that brigade permanantly
"The infantry regiments still consisted of two battalions, each with four companies, and two grenadier companies. The regiment staff consisted of: 1 Colonel 1 Leutnant-Colonel 2 Majors 2 Adjutants-Major 1 Regimental Quatermaster 1 Auditeur (Regimental Judge) 1 Regimental Surgeon 2 Fahnenjunker (Cadets) 1 Stabfourrier (Staff Quatermaster) 1 Assistant Surgeon 1 Drum Corporal 8 1st Class Musicians 2 Armorers 1 Provost 38 Total The Ten companies of the regiment each had: 6 1st Class Captains 4 2nd Class Captains 10 Leutnants 20 Unterleutnants 8 Fanrich (Ensigns) 10 Feldwebel 20 Sergeants 10 Fouriers 5 Surgeons 100 Corporals 6 Drummers (Grenadier coys) 24 Drummers (Musketeer coys) 4 Sappers (Grenadier coys) 16 Sappers (Musketeer coys) 360 Grenadiers 1440 Musketeers 2043 Total" So that would give a battalion total of 720 grenadiers in four companies plus NCOs, Officers and Tete du Colonne, per brigade – maybe around 770-780 total? |

I have this book, but it is clear that this theorical organisation was not used. I search, mainly, the organisation and numbers of men par batallion after the reorganisation of 10 june 1809. |

Gill's Thunder on the Danube 3 gives battalion strengths in correct order of battle for Wagram. 2nd (Bose) – 529; 1st (Radeloff) 526; 3rd (Metzsch) 657. 1st & 3rd were attached to Dupas's division. |
