OK folks,
Many of us like some cheer to drink with our gaming, hey, it's a social activity, and I think many of us desire an occasional and moderate amount of social lubricant. So? What's your choice of beer?

Me? I am a Newcastle or Guinness guy. But I am not TOO choosy.

Plynkes28 May 2010 4:27 a.m. PST

Obviously not, if you drink Newky Brown and Guinness.

abelp0128 May 2010 4:27 a.m. PST

Yuengling for me!

Fnnaaaaaaarrr.

It appears that many Americans (if the amount of times Newky is mentioned on here is anything to go by*) like sweet, fizzy beer with no body. Odd. The stuff's like making love in a canoe IMO.

Over here it's mostly drunk by students. They're not old enough to know better. Then again, 'real ale' tends to be drunk by bearded middle-aged blokes wearing chunky sweaters over a noticeable pot belly.

Anyhoo. I'll take a Leffe Blonde. It may be sweetish, but at least it has taste, bite and body :)

*I realise that this may not be a scientific sampling

Guiness Export is nice.

Many a real ale – I gave up the Brown when I graduated, and only drink Guinness in Ireland or the very occasional genuine* Irish boozer over here. (All the nonsense about "it tastes different" is true, but mainly down to well-maintained and clean lines, and a barrel not sitting there for very long, nothing to do with Liffey water….)

Dom.

* No, not O'Neils….

1) Guinness
2) Newcastle

I rest my case.

Any one of the now numerous light hoppy session beers that they have on rotation at my local – CAMRA Pub of the Year in 1999.

Yes, I can certainly be cited in support of your theory, although my sweaters aren't generally that chunky. (The belly is, though, sadly….)

Amateurs Derek – I'm a couple of miles from the current one, also the first ever to successfully defend the title…. Kelham Island's a wonderful place…. :-)

Commercial beer: Fullers – London Pride

Otherwise, home brew. I make a mean London Porter and a killer India Pale Ale (both based on 100+ year old recipes)

NoLongerAMember28 May 2010 5:46 a.m. PST

If I am doing ww2 or Battle of Britain, Spitfire is the beer of choice, otherwise I like London Pride.

Ooooh a killer pale ale, wanna chare the recipe?

Captain Clegg28 May 2010 5:49 a.m. PST

A nice IPA served in the bar where my club meets, brewed of course by a brewery 2 miles down the road. Got to do my bit for the local economy.

Oktoberfest, preferably Paulaner or Hacker-Pschorr, and if not that then Kostrizer Schwarz Bier. Otherwise anything German will do.

Fat Wally28 May 2010 5:58 a.m. PST

Guinness first choice without question.

I like IPA and Newcastle too but am drinking a lot of Magners recently.

Chris Rance28 May 2010 5:58 a.m. PST

Old Speckled Hen, unfortunately rare as hen's teeth around here.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP28 May 2010 5:59 a.m. PST

A pedestrian choice is mine, I'm afraid. Heineken,
which I only drink a few times a year, while gaming.

I've had friends press Newcastle upon me – their treat,
so I drank it.

Normally, I prefer a good Port, or Jamesons, and not
too much of either.

Personal logo x42brown Supporting Member of TMP28 May 2010 6:08 a.m. PST

A good 60/- beer. Unfortunately becoming rarer by the day. 70/-, 80/- or even stronger seam to be what people drink nowadays all strength and no taste.

A nice foaming pint of Landlord.

Of the bottled stuff, Becks is probably the least worst.

I don't usually drink while gaming, I've noticed that throwing dice and the general associated arm waving don't go well with unstable pints of valuable liquid.

The best beer is free, and cold.

I refuse to drink Sam Adams. Google "Opie Anthony St. Patrick's" to see why.

Well, I refuse to PAY for it…

Gotta be Old Peculier from Theakstons.

IPAs and Porters from various breweries, mostly US west coast sources like Deschutes and sierra Nevada because thats whats cheaper out here. I like to support the local on-island breweries like Kona Brewing Company too.

toofatlardies28 May 2010 7:22 a.m. PST

I must admit that I tend not to drink when I am gaming.

Before and after, but not during.

I enjoy any beer during a wargame. I like a porter or stout for 'winter gauge' in cold weather. While I like trying different brews, even ok stuff is great if its cold and enjoyed in the company of friends during a good battle. My tactical decisions are all better with a pint!

While not overly picky about brews, I am about my snacks when wargaming. Greasy potato chips (or crisps, depending on locale) or other slimy snacks are not appreciated on my battlefields. Little is worse than bright orange artificial nacho cheese flavoring befouling your fighting legions!

Scorpio28 May 2010 7:53 a.m. PST

Rarely drink while gaming. (Maybe that could be a separate poll.)

When I play video games, I've been known to enjoy a cider (Woodchuck Amber, usually.)

Titchmonster28 May 2010 7:59 a.m. PST

COLD and Free!

Cerdic28 May 2010 8:14 a.m. PST

Old Speckled Hen is good. So is Spitfire and any other beer from Shepherd Neame – they are in Kent, the home of hops, and have been in business since 1698! They figured out how to brew some time ago…..

tberry740328 May 2010 8:31 a.m. PST

Bud…

Lets see now…

In the local supermarket: Shiner varieties, or Fat Tire.

If I pop into Dallas I'll be sure to pick up a stock of my favourite: Theakston's Old Peculiar.
(and BTW, varieties like Old Speckled Hen, Spitfire, and a host of others are readily available here in Texas!)

Must be really good. In general CAMRA like to spread things around a bit. There's about four pubs in Edinburgh and the Lothians that seem to be on a rota for the local award, they never seem to give it to the same place two years in a row, there's more than a hint on Buggin's Turn.
