Anyone ever play these Ancients Rules? I think they were published back in the mid/late 70s. Just curious how they were. |

I helped develop them at the club in Decatur back around 1974 or so. They were modified Classic Warfare. I see them for sale from time to time. I have one copy left. Will see if it is here if so will post more later. VR James Mattes |

Dave Petrowsky and Jim Allen developed these from the club rules we used. They were first printed in 1981 (2nd Ed) scale was 1 inch = 10 meters/yards, one figure = 30 men, or 8-10 chariots, elephants or Engines. Mounting was WAG standard. Sequence of Play was five phases, Writen orders, Declare Charges, Movement, Missile fire, Melee, and Moral checks. Base rules were only 22 pages. Rules came with two huge wall charts with most if not all of the information needed to play the game. Simple fast play fun rules. I developed almost the same rules for Republic Roman Warfare around the same time. Most of the mechanism was the same. Cost at publishing was $4.00 USD I have seen copies go for $5 USD on Ebay. Classical Hack plays very much like these rules as well. VR James Mattes |

Vojvoda: I still have 2 copies of your rules and love using them! Now you've gotten me interested in Classical Hack. acarhj: These rules are a blast to play with. You can teach other players the basics within a few minutes and they'll catch on quickly. Ted |

I played these back in the day and still have my copy. IIRC, the mechanics are appriate for that time period nut I doubt I would use them today. |

Was this strictly an Ancients set of rules, or was it for fantasy, as well? |

Ancients up to early Dark ages. Some illustrations were right out of the fantasy mode however. I do not remember any fantasy rules in them. VR James Mattes |
