There was an issue of Wargames Illustrated that had a whale hunting scenario. Does anybody know what issue it was in?

Thanks!

What?
Really?

I'd like to see that issue too…

Whale! The other white meat!

I have a love affair with the whaling era, I would really like to see that…

I spent hours in the Pacific Whaling Museum on Maui during my honeymoon with my first wife. She didn't understand my fascination with the harpooon room…

Black Cavalier20 May 2010 4:39 p.m. PST

I remember that article, I was going to use it as a basis for a Flagship Games Pirates! game. Don't remember the specific issue, but it's been long enough ago that it was definately pre-#200, & I'm pretty sure it had a black cover. That narrows it down a bit at least.

Who makes the 25mm whaling boats? I recall seeing them at conventions a few years ago. If I ever got some of those I'd consider running a zombie whale scenario some day.

I ate whale when we visited Iceland. Puffin too.

I think Eureka does the 28mm Whaing Boat and crew. I am on my phone right now so I can't check to be certain (Eureka won't load on the phone tonite, Bleeped text it!)

Taste like chicken?

I remember reading a story about how a Japanese restaurant uses "research whale meat" to make burgers that taste exactly like…burgers. Definitely a ???? moment for me…

On the PC scale is whale hunting higher or lower then clubbing baby seals or clear cutting the rain forest?

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut20 May 2010 5:43 p.m. PST

When did it become whale hunting? I thought if it was in the water, you just added "ing" to the end of the animal name? Hence, "fishing," "shrimping," "crabbing," and "whaling." And I imagine that "research" whaling is gramatically (if not ethically) constructed much the same way as "sport" fishing?

BTW, while I am fascinated with the whaling era, and am curious about the culinary opportunities presented by cetaceans, I do notcurrently condone whaling activities. It has been overdone, and the species need to be allowed to recover for a *long* time…

Cpt Arexu20 May 2010 5:45 p.m. PST

There are burger chains in Japan that smell 'fishy,' I always assumed they used whale oil or meat. Lotteria is the one I remember…

There was an American sushi chef that got busted selling whale meat from 'research' whales this year. In Oregon, maybe?

Cpt Arexu20 May 2010 5:46 p.m. PST

It is whaling, or whale fishery.

lugal hdan20 May 2010 6:20 p.m. PST

Oh Greenland is a dreadful place
It's a place that's never green
Where there's ice and snow
And the whale-fishes blow
And daylight's seldom seen brave boys,
Daylight's seldom seen.

"It is whaling, or whale fishery."

"whale fishery" is an oxymoron. whales are mammals, NOT fish.

whaling is the correct term. I actually saw a few sperm whales the other day in the gulf of mexico.

Cpt Arexu20 May 2010 7:00 p.m. PST

No matter the logic, mammals or great fishes, the pool of whales that are pursued in a particular area are a fishery, like the southern ocean fishery, or the Sea of Japan fishery. Or the sperm whale fishery. Or the Newfoundland seal fishery.

You could also really go for the gusto, and try to do it from a kayak.

I imagine that will be a bit more dangerous for the characters you generate though.

If you want to do modern hunting, you can also do anti-whalers too. I think some call it whale hunting, since they use a harpoon-gun.

nebeltex20 May 2010 7:47 p.m. PST

good point capt. but i believe the term "fishery" implies that they are harvested. in some cases this is unfortunately still true today, but for the most part, marine mammals are well protected these days. or would you consider the "polar bear fishery" an acceptable industry term?

;-)

1) Can we please bring this back on track and figure out where the game rules for whaling can be found?

2) For those of you who have tried it, what does whale taste like? I am dreadfully curious about this, to the point where it overcomes my concerns about the ecology…

2 – a bit like beef, and certainly not unpleasant. I had it carpaccio-style with wasabi and a sweet soya sauce in Iceland.

Found it!

It's issue number…wait…no…that's the baby seal clubbing issue. How could I get those two mixed up?

Sorry…

OT I know, but I couldn't help myself, especially since someone has now answered your question.

Hmmm, I can't imagine a baby seal game would be too interesting.

Catch baby seal – perhaps a roll of 1 – 17, on a D20 for success. 18 – 19 and the seal evades. Just to make it interesting, on a 20, a killer whale shows up, and the hunter becomes the hunted.

Sadly, or not, the human has the same chance of evading the whale, as the baby seal did the human (18 – 19 on a D20). 1 – 17 and he is eaten. On a 20, the killer whale decides to play waterpolo with his pals, using the human as the ball.

Back to the seals: roll again for clubbing. Successful on a 1 – 18; on a 19, the seal bites down hard, and injures the hunter; and hit self on a 20. Yell profanities for 30+ seconds if a 19 or 20 are rolled, repeat. After 3 injuries from seals, it is time for a break.

Playing with the whales is fatal.

flicking wargamer21 May 2010 3:58 a.m. PST

Someone has been running a baby seal hunting game at East cons for some time. The players all seem to have a good time. There is even a giant radioactive seal that exacts its revenge on the hunters if I recall.

Top Gun Ace21 May 2010 8:46 a.m. PST

I'd be pulling for the killer whale, since clubbing the little ones is just wrong.

lugal hdan21 May 2010 1:14 p.m. PST

Top Gun Ace – you wouldn't feel that way if you knew what they were saying about us. :)

I think White Wolf Magazine once had a "Club Baby Seals For Satan" game insert, maybe back in the early '90s.

I made a scenario for Pirates of the Spanish Main that uses whaling in place of gold gathering. Of course, the "whaling" ships can still trade cannonballs if they want.
