I have about 120 of Eurekas's new and old 15mm Sci-Fi German stormtroopers. They will be based on Fow Bases. I want them to be useful for a wide amount of uses including,

1. VERY Late FoW Panzer Grenadiers.
2. 1947 and/or Weird War 2
3. Neo Nazi Force for AK47 Republic Rules.
4. Generic Sci-Fi troops for such rules as Alien Squad Leader, Future War Commander and Ambush Alley and its Sci-fi version.

So my problem is, what paint scheme do I use? Do I paint uniform and body armour the same colour or do I use one colour for the uniform and a contrast colour for the Body armour?

Some Ideas include,
i) Field Grey Uniform with black body armour
ii)Afrika Corps coloured unifom with Black Body armour.
iii) Dark Grey/Black uniform AND Body Armour. (Simple to do, may be effective with highlights and colour accents)
iv) A late war Camo Pattern.

I am looking for your ideas and inspiration.

Thanks for the help.

I have always liked Pulp Figures color scheme for the she wolves. You can do both the grey/black and the brown black.

I'd go with a late war camo pattern. Pea dot looks really effective on those figures.

I've been considering a darker gray uniform with Field gray armor for one set and the second group in a late war camo pattern (maybe with some of the camo armor or helmets replaced with the standard field gray where they were replaced and have were not camo).

Late war camo with black armor?

Why not paint the armour dunkelgelb and do late war camo for any uniform bits that show?

If you like you could always lay an ambush scheme over the dunkelgelb but I think it would be more striking with just the panzer yellow.

If they are regular army panzergrenadiers, then I would suggest armor in field grey, and any exposed uniform bits in any of three different shades of faded field grey. For my own german stuff, I use Tamiya field grey for helmets, gas mask canisters, mess kits, ets, and Vallejo german uniform for the uniform itself. The field grey is just a little bit darker and makes a remarkable differnce in the final result.

The other way to go would be panzer yellow for the armor, and field grey for the uniform.

Just my opinion, of course, and in a moment of lucidity at that :)

do the armour in ambush scheme and the uniforms in pea dot or marsh pattern

Shiroyama2, I like the lighter coloured ones. Can you recall yhe colours?

shiroyama214 May 2010 9:21 a.m. PST

Er…no….

Sorry, it was a while ago.

To be honest, the photos don't have quite the right colour, but I do know that they were painted with Vellejo paints.
Sorry not much help.

I'm doing mine in Panzer gray armor with Feldgrau cloth*, although I've found that on larger minis the better color mix is Panzer Gray with *English Uniform* cloth. The brown seems to make a better contrast with the panzer gray than the Feldgrau does.

I also do bright scarlet eyes, Jin Roh/Stray Dog style. Really makes the troops POP on the table when you've got this fairly dark mass of troops with glowing red eyes advancing towards you.

* Feldgrau areas are upper arms and upper legs.

I don't think I'd do ambush patterns on the armor or camo on the cloth under it. Dunkelgelb plates over Feldgrau is a good contrast, but I like my Kerberos dark and sinister.

Shiroyama2's light gray troops look like they were painted with panzer gray, washed with black, and highlighted with Reaper Master Series Rainy Gray. I'd use a little bit of white mixed with Panzer Gray (erm, Vallejo MC German Gray) as the highlight, myself. Rainy Gray is a little too big a jump.

I'm just thinking I need a contrast and lighter tone because they're 15mm. I undercoat in black and put a dark wash over the top. My 28mm Swat/Umbrella Corp are too subtle to really pick up the changes, and my micro modern Soviets that spent ages on the camo pattern look great, FROM 2 INCHES!!

Faded Feldgrau is pretty easy, although there's not a lot of exposed cloth on those minis. That's why I painted the upper arms and thighs like they're cloth on mine, even though those areas look armored.

I'd use Shiroyama2's method for highlighting the armor, and then hit the arms and legs with feldgrau, a brown wash, feldgrau drybrush, and a light feldgrau+white top highlight.
