John writes:

According to my family, my great-grandfather was a member of Napoleon III's Cent Garde in the late 1860's. His last name was Uharriet. I would appreciate any information that you or your colleagues might have about him, or direct me towards some sites that I might be able to research. In case you are wondering, my grandfather was 50 when my mother was born in 1940 and my great-grandfather was 50 when my grandfather was born in 1890. Vive la France!

Do you have any other information on him? First name, place of birth, area where he lived, names of wife or children. Did he die in France?

One might contact the military attache at the French embassy for assistance in contacting the pertinent records offices.

Bill,

John should also contact a local history society to receive assistance from local genealogists. They can steer him to appropriate on-line genealogical sites that will help him trace his family tree.
