1) Ancients (and, like most rules, I consider that to be about 3000BC-1500AD)
2) Napoleonics
3) Sci Fi

jameshammyhamilton23 Apr 2010 10:00 a.m. PST

Hmm, difficult. Well the order is difficult and I have to pick only three.

How about:
1)WWII
2)Medieval
3)Ancients

Patonius23 Apr 2010 10:05 a.m. PST

1) Napoleonics
2) Ancient/Medieval
3) 18th Cent.

Gallowglass23 Apr 2010 10:12 a.m. PST

Hmmmm.

1) Horse and Musket (1750's up to 1880-ish)
2) Early to mid-twentieth century (both World Wars and a few bits in between)
3) Dark Ages, although that doesn't really happen these days

Now that I think about it, a year ago the order of the above would probably have had the 20th century stuff at the top of the list. Definite shift in priorities/interest over the past 12 months, mainly AWI and Black Powder-related.

consectari23 Apr 2010 10:16 a.m. PST

Things I currently get to play:
1) Sci-fi horror
2) Sci-fi post apoc
3) Sci-fi space fantasy

Old West styled Space Opera

Sci-Fi (hard-ish, i.e. The GZG rules family and Traveller)

I'd play Napoleonics and SYW as well, but for the moment I remain too awed.

Great War
Marlburian
Arthurian Dark Ages

I can't justifiably give broader periods than these particular conflicts. I couldn't write 18th Century because I'm not interested in the Seven years war or AWI at all. Ditto Ancients – I enjoy Dark Ages Arthurian games, but have no interest in, say, the Crusades or Assyrians. If this is to be a poll I think 'periods' will need to be broken down a lot more to appease us pedants.

Flat Beer and Cold Pizza23 Apr 2010 4:04 p.m. PST

Thanks to the wonders of Attention Deficit Disorder I'll play just about anything. However, if you're going to force me to pick three only, here goes:

1. Marlburian. Reason: it's a very colorful period, relatively easy to paint up, and cavalry is very potent if used properly.

2. World War 2. Reason: it's extremely popular, and I love combined arms.

3. Ancients up until the end of Rome. Reason: it's a fun challenge because success or failure usually depends on your initial plan and deployment.

Atomic Floozy23 Apr 2010 4:21 p.m. PST

1. 19th Century – Plains Indian Wars (Six Gun Sound:BoG & Yellow Ribbon)
2. Sci-Fi (5150)
3. Fantasy (Warrior Heroes & Reaper's Warlord)

Good & interesting answers from most so far. I appreciate those that tried to actually narrow it down to three.

Lots of names in here I havent seen involved in polls before so thanks for coming out (so to speak).

1) 14th-15th Century Medievals (HYW, wars of the Italian City States, Wars of the Roses, Burgundian Wars)

2) NWF/Second Afghan War colonials (mostly using TSATF)

3) Whatever someone else I game with wants to play.

It's a good question but I think an even better one, inspired by it, would be "tell us your favorite period and explain why you

Flat Beer and Cold Pizza23 Apr 2010 9:42 p.m. PST

@Mad Guru: that's not a bad idea. But there are so many factors involved in selecting a period. It's really a very subjective thing. Perhaps a poll would be the best bet for this.

Duck Crusader23 Apr 2010 9:44 p.m. PST

Ancients (WAB)
Dark Ages (WAB)
Colonial (Bluddy all of it, start to finish, using Blackpowder, Sharpe's Practice, WAB, Empire of Liberty, Contemptible Little Armies, The Sword and the Flame, Thrilling Expeditions, Rugged Adventures, In the Dark heart of Africa and any other set, historical or pulp.)

Shaun Travers23 Apr 2010 10:18 p.m. PST

1) ancients (various rules)
2) WW2 (battalion level mostly)
3) Medieval

And that's actually about it. If I wanted to expand, I think i would change to smaller scales in the above periods rather than branch into others.

archstanton7323 Apr 2010 10:40 p.m. PST

AWI
ACW
WW2

only tla's

Michail23 Apr 2010 10:57 p.m. PST

I enjoy too many periods, however top 3 are,

WW1 and WW2 Navy
Sci fi ground combat, mostly Dirt Side 2
Star ship combat, Full Thrust and A Sky Full of Ships

Others

WW2 ground combat (not FOW)
WW1 ground combat
Air combat

Mad Guru Supporting Member of TMP23 Apr 2010 11:24 p.m. PST

1) 14th-15th Century Medievals -- HYW, wars of the Italian City States, Wars of the Roses, Burgundian Wars, etc. (tactical level, mostly using Tactica Medieval)

2) NWF/Second Afghan War colonials (tactical level, mostly using TSATF)

3) Whatever someone else I game with wants to play.

mikeah24 Apr 2010 6:48 a.m. PST

Ancients
American Revolution (Not really 18th Century)
Samurai (Yea, not really any of the choices)

American Revolution really has a different flavor than the standard 18th Century game.

Samurai is more like fantasy or science fiction. Just weird enough to not really be any of the listed choices.
