I've been on a Spanish Civil War tear for the past couple of days, mostly concentrating on the improvised armored vehicles that were in service on the Republican side. The Spanish word "blindado" translates to "armor(ed)", but the word "tiznao" is somewhat of a mystery. I've Googled and Wikied it, but all I got was the following:

es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiznao

Anyone gaming or interested in the SCW have any idea if "tiznao" may have been a slang word for an armored vehicle, which is what I'm now thinking? Just a question of curiousity. Thanks!

Yes – los tiznaos is something like "the dirty ones" I believe (although tiznao is also a cod recipe….), and was used to refer to improvised AFVs – ie. boiler plate jobs rather than T-26s.

tiznaos are home made armoued vehicles. Wilsons 'Tanks and Armoured Vehicles of the Sanish Civil War' has pictures of lots and lots of them…

Thanks, fellas! So, "tiznao" was used to distinguish the homebuilt armor from the factory-produced AFVs ("blindados"), just like the word "jalopy" was used to identify patched-together cars back in the day. Interesting!

Martin, hopefully you'll check back here, but would you know anything about the Spanish books concerning tanks and armored cars? I think the book was called "Carros de combate", or something like that. Thanks, again!

I don't have a copy but it is supposed to be pretty good. Kinda expensive.

$115.29 USD for a used copy? Hmm.

Looks like I'll try and get it through interlibrary loan. Thank you again, Martin. grin

Try these, they might be cheaper.

Mazarrasa, J: The tanks in the war in Spain 1936-1939 Ed Chiron

Mazarrasa, J: Armoured vehicles of the Civil War. Ed. San Martín

Or this web site should be useful.

Thank you for the suggestions and links, Graham. Looks like I'll be adding the titles you've provided to my interlibrary loan list, too. It's amazing what someone can find through interlibrary loan, so wish me luck!

Good luck mate. One thing to consider though is this…apart from the Tizanos there isn't really that many armour Types to go at in the SCW. I have read the Albert book (loaned) and have the second of the Mazarrasa books as well as the Wilson one- there isn't much to actually know. Most of what these say is also on various websites so don't be too disappointed if there isn't a lot to discover. Good luck anyway1
