Who has played Colonial Gothic (I have read the reviews on the Wargame Vault) and how did it play in your estimation?

Does it twist history so that historical players will be driven to distraction?

Gracias,

Glenn

I have played CG, and it was kinda neat…

Kinda.

But for that kind of game(in that time frame…), we play Witch Hunter:The Invisible World. Its set in 1689 in Colonial America. I can tell you BUNCHES about this game. We play it as one of our main games now. I ran a game of it at Conquest Sac and soon again at Kubla Con. It tries to stick to history with only some changes to history.

The game really plays it it strong points: history and horror. We usually play it to the hilt in the horror but with the historical trappings. You can visit New Amsterdam, cross swords with the Dutch East Indianan Trading Company, go to South America with an invasion force from the Spanish, only to beaten back by the Aztecs, or fight in the underground of Paris.

We liked WH:tIW sooo much, we started a FIW game and added witches, monsters, etc…

As I said, WH:tIW, I can get more in-depth for you if you like.

@richarDMB: thanks for the review links.

Thank you for the CG comments. Very enlightening. Disappointing to some degree but enlightening.

As for the hijack of the thread to discuss another game in detail; yes, I would like to hear more about WH but certainly not on this thread. Further discussion of WH should not be continued here.

You may PM me, reference me to a TMP thread discussing WH, or start a different thread as seems appropriate.

Gracias,

Glenn

Hi Glenn –
A new edition of Colonial Gothic was released since that review. I've picked up a copy and skimmed through it – so take this with a grain of salt. I think they have added more detail on the occult side of things, more spells, monsters and such. The game system appeared unchanged and that quirky rule allowing folks with low attribute scores to afford higher skills appears to still be in place too. Overall it looks much more playable, though I would personally ditch the system for Basic Role Playing.
Cheers – Mike
